The progress of prophylactic treatment in retinopathy of prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinal vascular disorder frequently found in premature infants. Different therapeutic strategies have been developed to treat ROP. However, there are still many children with ROP suffering by severe limitations in vision or even blindness. Recently, ROP has been suggested to be caused by abnormal development of the retinal vasculature, but not simply resulted by retinal neovascularization which takes about 4 to 6wk after birth in premature infants. Thus, instead of focusing on how to reduce retinal neovascularization, understanding the pathological change

Optical coherence tomography in imaging of macular diseases.

OCT (opitcal coherence tomography), is a diagnostic method that enables the analysis of the retinal structures by means of high-resolution tomographic cross-sections of the retina. Whereas fluorescein and indocyanine angiography allow visualization of the retinal epithelium layer and chorioretinal vessels, OCT may help in diagnosing and monitoring the condition of many internal retinal layers. Ultrasound B-mode examinations have a resolution of about 150 microm while OCT provides a resolution of 10 microm. OCT makes it possible to detect and measure morphological changes, retinal thickness, re…

Fluorescein gonioangiography of newly formed vessels in the anterior chamber angle.

Fluorescein gonioangiography was performed in 20 eyes of 20 patients with various ocular disorders such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vessel occlusion, traumatic angle recession, and granulomatous uveitis. It was clearly demonstrated that newly formed vessels in the anterior chamber angle originated from the ciliary body, and extended predominatingly onto the surface of the angle wall via ciliary body band.

To report a case of unilateral proliferative retinopathy following noncerebral malaria with Plasmodium falciparum in Southern India.

The retinopathy in association with malaria fever described so far includes retinal hemorrhages, vessel changes, retinal discoloration/whitening and papilledema. Malaria retinopathy has been mostly described in severe cases, associated with Plasmodium falciparum, correlating the patho-physiology of retinal and cerebral manifestations. We report an unusual case of proliferative retinopathy as a manifestation of malaria fever, caused by P. falciparum with no cerebral involvement. The patient had features of unilateral retinal vascular occlusion with proliferative changes and vitreous hemorrhage.

Effect of chronic high-altitude hypoxia on retinal vascular phenotype, choroidal and retinal vasoreactivity in Peruvian highlanders.

High-altitude chronic hypoxia can induce excessive erythrocytosis (EE, defined as a haemoglobin concentration of ≥21 g/dL in men), leading to hyperviscosity and promoting endothelial dysfunction. We aimed to assess whether EE affects the retinal vascular phenotype and the ophthalmological vascular response to CO2. We conducted an ophthalmological cross-sectional study among highlanders permanently living at 5100 m (La Rinconada, Peru). The central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE), central retinal vein equivalent (CRVE) and retinal vessel tortuosity were measured using semi-automatic imaging so

Simple non-mydriatic retinal photography is feasible and demonstrates retinal microvascular dilation in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

BACKGROUND: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and stroke but it remains unclear how to identify microvascular changes in this population. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that simple non-mydriatic retinal photography is feasible and can be used to assess microvascular damage in COPD. METHODS: Novel Vascular Manifestations of COPD was a prospective study comparing smokers with and without COPD, matched for age. Non-mydriatic, retinal fundus photographs were assessed using semi-automated software. RESULTS: Retinal images from

Outer retinal ischemic infarction--a newly recognized complication of cataract extraction and closed vitrectomy. Part 1. A case report.

This report describes a peculiar syndrome occurring as a complication of cataract extraction. The syndrome is characterized initially by (1) acute loss of central and paracentral vision discovered usually on the first postoperative day; (2) diffuse and patchy whitening of the outer retinal layers in the posterior fundus; (3) normal angiographic retinal and choroidal appearance and circulation time; (4) a peculiar polygonal pattern of fluorescein staining of the pigment epithelium and outer retina in the area of retinal whitening, and followed later by (5) clearing of the retinal whitening and

Spontaneous anatomical and visual improvement in myopic macular retinoschisis.

Myopic macular retinoschisis is a source of visual impairment in patients with high myopia. Many patients present with progressive visual loss or increasing distortion. Some eyes progress to macular hole or foveal retinal detachment, causing further vision loss. The mechanisms for development of myopic macular retinoschisis have been postulated to be from tractional forces exerted on the inner retina, either anteriorly from a shortened internal limiting membrane and the retinal vessels or posteriorly from staphylomatous changes. Surgical intervention is often indicated for patients with declin…

Color Doppler imaging of the eye and orbit. Technique and normal vascular anatomy.

Color Doppler imaging is a recent advance in ultrasonography that allows simultaneous two-dimensional imaging of structure and blood flow to be performed. Doppler information is superimposed in color over a conventional gray-scale ultrasound image. Using this technique, we examined 40 normal eyes. The central retinal artery, posterior ciliary arteries, ophthalmic artery, and central retinal vein could be located in all patients. Using the color image as a guide, Doppler spectral analysis allows quantitative assessment of blood flow velocity in these vessels. Color Doppler imaging is a new moda

Iatrogenic central retinal artery embolization: a complication of cardiac catheterization.

A 57-year-old man with a myocardial infarction was subjected to cardiac catheterization as a follow-up study for his heart problem. The catheter, made for one time use only, was reautoclaved and used sometime before catheterizing this man. A small fragment of this catheter dislodged while guiding the parent catheter into coronary vessels with a metallic guide-wire. The fragment traveled getting lodged in the central retinal artery of the right eye leaving the eye with only light perception vision. The catheter fragment could be seen in the central retinal artery at the optic nerve head.
