Comparative spatiotemporal analysis of the intrathecal immune response in natural listeric rhombencephalitis of cattle and small ruminants.

This study examined the spatiotemporal immune response in listeric rhombencephalitis of ruminants in situ. Our data support the view that astrocytes facilitate the containment of infectious lesions. Results on the natural disease recapitulate observations in experimental rodent models and suggest that the mounted adaptive lymphocytic response of ruminants is effective in eliminating Listeria monocytogenes (LM). However, our data indicate earlier participation of the adaptive immune response, a stronger B lymphocyte contribution and a more protracted macrophage infiltration in the natural disea…

Leptospirosis as the most frequent infectious disease impairing productivity in small ruminants in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Despite the importance of small ruminants breeding in developing countries, milk/meat productivity remains unsatisfactory. Infectious diseases, such as leptospirosis, brucellosis, and small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs), contribute to this scenario. The objective of the present study was to determine the role of each of these diseases in the productivity of small ruminants breeding in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In goats, 343 samples were tested for leptospirosis, 560 for Brucella abortus, and 506 for caprine arthritis-encephalitis (CAE), whereas in sheep, 308 samples were tested for leptospirosis…

A recombinant-based ELISA evaluating the efficacy of netobimin and albendazole in ruminants with naturally acquired fascioliasis.

The therapeutic efficacy of albendazole and netobimin in ruminants with naturally occurring fascioliasis was investigated using a recombinant-based ELISA. The variation in the IgG response against a 2.9-kDa recombinant protein (FhrAPS), termed efficacy index (EI) 1, and the egg-output changes, termed EI 2, were used to evaluate drug efficacy. The values of EI 1 ranged between 0% and 50% in sheep, and between 0% and 30% in cattle after treatment with albendazole and netobimin. Similar EI 2 values were observed in sheep receiving albendazole or netobimin, but the highest values were found in cat…

Diagnosis and epidemiological association of Listeria monocytogenes strains in two outbreaks of listerial encephalitis in small ruminants.

Two outbreaks of epizootic listerial encephalitis, one in sheep and one in goats, were investigated through pathology, microbiology, and DNA amplification-based techniques. Efforts were made to survey the diversity of Listeria monocytogenes strains in the silage consumed by affected animals and to verify the causal relationship between silage and disease outbreak. In both outbreaks, L. monocytogenes was isolated from silage and brain tissue samples. Random amplified polymorphic DNA patterns revealed two distinct L. monocytogenes strains, one of which was identical to the sheep brain isolate, i

Recent developments in trace element metabolism and function: trace elements, disease resistance and immune responsiveness in ruminants.

Evidence for the influence of trace elements on disease resistance in ruminants is reviewed with emphasis on susceptibility to infection in vivo during the more common deficiencies (copper, selenium and cobalt). Copper deficiency associated with increases in pasture molybdenum increased the susceptibility of lambs to microbial infections. Under experimental conditions, dietary molybdenum decreased the establishment of abomasal and intestinal nematodes but not their pathogenicity to lambs. Molybdenum may enhance inflammatory responses leading to parasite rejection by the host. Decreased inciden…

[Epidemiology of Rift Valley fever in western Africa. I. Serologic survey in domestic ruminants of Burkina Faso].

A serosurvey of Rift valley fever virus infection has been conducted among 2,410 domestic ruminants (sheep, goats and cattle) from Burkina Faso in 1985, 1986 and 1987. An active circulation of virus was demonstrated and 26.7% of the total animal tested had Rift valley fever virus reacting antibodies. An epizootic was demonstrated retrospectively for 1987 and appears to correspond to the RVF outbreak observed in the same type of sahelian environment during the same year in Mauritania. Analogous ecoclimatic and environmental risk factors are discussed. Others phleboviruses such as Arumowot, Gord…

The Double-Edged Sword of Social Sharing: Social Sharing Predicts Increased Emotion Differentiation When Rumination Is Low but Decreased Emotion Differentiation When Rumination Is High.

Laypeople believe that sharing their emotional experiences with others will improve their understanding of those experiences, but no clear empirical evidence supports this belief. To address this gap, we used data from four daily life studies (N = 659; student and community samples) to explore the association between social sharing and subsequent emotion differentiation, which involves labeling emotions with a high degree of complexity. Contrary to our expectations, we found that social sharing of emotional experiences was linked to greater subsequent emotion differentiation on occasions when

Persistent Postprandial Regurgitation vs Rumination in Patients With Refractory Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptoms: Identification of a Distinct Rumination Pattern Using Ambulatory Impedance-pH Monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 20% of patients with refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) might have postprandial rumination. The aim of this study was to distinguish persistent GERD-related postprandial regurgitation from rumination in patients with refractory GERD undergoing ambulatory multichannel intraluminal impedance-pH (MII-pH) monitoring. METHODS: We first characterized 24-hour and postprandial MII-pH patterns in 28 consecutive patients with confirmed rumination syndrome (positive clinical and high-resolution manometry/impedance). We compared such MII-pH patterns with those from 30 pat

First serological evidence of Coxiella burnetii exposure in domestic ruminants in Somalia: Implications for one health surveillance.

The recent serological detection of Coxiella burnetii exposure in Somali livestock (12.6% seroprevalence among 372 ruminants) is an important addition to the limited epidemiological evidence on zoonotic disease ecology in the Horn of Africa. This finding, combined with prior molecular evidence of a novel C. burnetii genotype (D21) in ticks infesting Somali camels and high seroprevalence (21.4%) in febrile patients in neighboring Ethiopia, provides a rationale for investigating Q fever as a potentially under-recognized zoonosis in the region. However, critical knowledge gaps persist, including …

Strain-dependent differences in the capacity of peste des petits ruminants virus to infect antigen-presenting cells.

The ability of morbilliviruses to infect antigen-presenting cells (APCs) plays a major role in infection outcome, because these cells transport peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) from the respiratory tract to the lymph nodes before spreading to lymphoid and epithelial tissues. This study used two cell models-monocyte-derived macrophages (MoMs) and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs)-from three host species (goat, sheep, and cattle) to evaluate the differential ability of APCs to be infected by two strains of PPRV with contrasting virulence in goats. Infection was analyzed using flow …

An update on heat stress impacts on rumen microbiome composition, fermentation parameters, and mitigation approaches in ruminants.

Over the past decade, there has been an increasing amount of literature on heat stress (HS) effects on ruminant production systems, yet much uncertainty still exists about the relationship between HS and rumen microbial ecology across species. This narrative review synthesizes peer-reviewed evidence from 2020 to 2025, with the aim of providing a critical appraisal of HS effects on rumen microbiome composition and fermentation parameters in cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats. A convergent pattern emerges from the available data: HS consistently reduces cellulolytic bacteria (Fibrobacter, Ruminoc

Helminth diversity, prevalence, and host-specific patterns in wild and domestic ruminants of the Bukhara region, Uzbekistan.

Objectives: Helminth infections impose major health burdens on livestock and threaten wildlife at the livestock-wildlife interface in Central Asian drylands. Despite rising concern over parasite transmission between domestic and wild ungulates, integrated surveys remain limited. This study characterized helminth species richness, prevalence, and infection patterns in domestic ruminants (sheep, goats, and cattle) and critically endangered wild ungulates (Ovis ammon bocharensis, Gazella subgutturosa, and Cervus hanglu yarkandensis) in the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan. Balancing High Yield and Metabolic Health in Dairy Ruminants: The Central Hub Role of the Rumen Microbiota.

Modern dairy production has greatly increased milk yield, but high productivity is often accompanied by greater metabolic pressure, particularly during the transition period. Ketosis, fatty liver, and subacute ruminal acidosis are major disorders that limit health, efficiency, and sustainability in high-yielding dairy ruminants. This review examines the rumen microbiota as a central biological interface linking diet, ruminal fermentation, epithelial function, hepatic metabolism, and inflammation. Under homeostatic conditions, the rumen microbiota supports lactation by converting dietary fibre,…

Early prediction of declining health associated with helminth infection in small ruminants using accelerometers and machine learning.

Assessment of the health status of individual animals is a key step in the timely and targeted treatment of infections, which is critical in the fight to slow the development of anthelmintic and antimicrobial resistance. The FAMACHA scoring system has been used successfully to detect anaemia caused by infection with the parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus in small ruminants and is an effective way to identify individuals in need of treatment. However, assessing FAMACHA is labour-intensive and costly, as individuals must be manually examined at frequent intervals. Here, accelerometers were …

Evolutionary dynamics of PEG10 and its interacting proteins during early and late-stage placental development in ruminants.

Ruminants play a crucial role in dairy farming, pharmaceuticals, and embryonic stem cell research; thus, it is vital to prevent pregnancy loss and improve reproductive outcomes through a better understanding of placental development. Paternally-expressed gene 10 (PEG10) is a conserved gene essential for placental development in mammals, but its function in ruminants is not well understood. To develop insights into its role in placental development, this study investigated the gene structure and expression of PEG10 in cattle and goats. We found that PEG10's structure was conserved across specie…
