Diagnostic Performance of Artificial Intelligence for Detection of Scaphoid and Distal Radius Fractures: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: To review the existing literature to (1) determine the diagnostic efficacy of artificial intelligence (AI) models for detecting scaphoid and distal radius fractures and (2) compare the efficacy to human clinical experts. METHODS: PubMed, OVID/Medline, and Cochrane libraries were queried for studies investigating the development, validation, and analysis of AI for the detection of scaphoid or distal radius fractures. Data regarding study design, AI model development and architecture, prediction accuracy/area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROC), and imaging modalit

Successful closed reduction of a trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation in a 11-year-old boy: a case report.

CASE: Perilunate dislocation is an uncommon injury in children. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented a trans-scapho-perilunate fracture-dislocation of the carpus after falling from his bike. Treatment consisted of a closed reduction under general anesthesia followed by cast immobilization for 12 weeks. The injury healed with good wrist function on follow-up. CONCLUSION: Closed reduction should be attempted because it can be successful and allows for closed treatment with the cast. It provides good radiological healing and satisfying functional results.

Acute Scaphoid Fractures: A Critical Analysis Review.

Nondisplaced scaphoid fractures can be effectively treated nonoperatively, with union rates approaching or, in some series, exceeding the rates attained with operative intervention. The evidence supports equal outcomes when using a short arm or long arm cast for the closed treatment of nondisplaced scaphoid fractures. Also, equivalent outcomes have been demonstrated with or without a thumb spica component to the cast. Operative intervention is the recommended treatment for displaced scaphoid fractures. Advanced imaging should be obtained if clinical suspicion is present for a scaphoid fracture

Preiser's disease in a five-fingered hand.

Preiser's disease, also known as idiopathic avascular necrosis of the scaphoid, and five-fingered hand are rare hand conditions. In this report, we present a case of a 25 year old female patient who had avascular necrosis of the scaphoid and five-fingered hand.

Bilateral scaphoid stress fracture in a platform diver presenting with unilateral symptoms.

Scaphoid stress fracture is rare and occurs mainly in gymnasts. The current literature has only two reported cases: unilateral scaphoid stress fracture in a platform diver and bilateral scaphoid stress fracture in a gymnast. We herein report bilateral stress fracture of the scaphoid in a platform diver who presented with only one symptomatic side. Our patient was a 16-year-old competitive platform diver with an 18-month history of pain in the right wrist. Radiography revealed fracture of the right scaphoid at the waist. As part of our preoperative plan of measuring the scaphoid length to deter

Osteoid Osteoma of the Trapezium: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Osteoid osteoma is the most common benign osteogenic bone neoplasm. Osteoid osteomas are typically located in the metaphysis and diaphysis of long bones, especially the tibia and femur. However, less common sites of the skeleton can be affected as well, including carpal bones. Among carpal bones, the scaphoid and the capitate are the most affected. Osteoid osteoma of the trapezium is an extremely rare entity, with only seven cases reported in recent literature. We present a case of a 29-year-old male with persistent left wrist pain who was diagnosed with an osteoid osteoma of the trapezium bon

[Effect of age and anti-osteoporotic drugs on bone strength and structure of the distal radius].

The distal radius constitutes a proximal part of the wrist joint, which bears axial load from the carpal bones. Based on the biomechanical experiments, the load transmitted from the carpal bones to the distal articular surface of the radius is greater to the lunate fossa than the scaphoid fossa. The findings are consistent with the results obtained from HR-pQCT analysis of the distal radius. As ageing, bone mineral densities of the distal radius decrease, and structures of the cortical and trabecular bones also deteriorate. Such deterioration can be prevented by osteoporotic medicines such as

Evaluation of ischaemic necrosis of carpal bones by magnetic resonance imaging.

Nine patients with chronic pain in the wrist were examined by M.R.I. to evaluate its accuracy in the detection of ischaemic necrosis of carpal bones. In seven patients, M.R.I. confirmed scintigraphic and radiographic signs of ischaemic necrosis. In two patients with radionuclide accumulations, M.R.I. did not confirm the diagnosis: in one, M.R.I. was totally normal and in the other it showed signs of a healing scaphoid fracture. From this limited experience, M.R.I. seems to be a sensitive imaging modality which is more specific than scintigraphy.

Embryonic and early fetal development of the human scapholunate ligament.

BACKGROUND: although the development of the human wrist ligaments has been studied, to our knowledge, a detailed study of the development of the scapholunate ligament during the embryonic and early fetal period has not been performed. METHODS: we have analyzed 32 human embryos ranging from 8 to 31 mm of crown-rump length, and 26 fetuses ranging 33-102 mm long. RESULTS: our observations showed that, in Carnegie stage 20 (20 mm), we can observe a mass of mesenchymal tissue between the cartilaginous anlages of the lunate, the scaphoid and the radius, that in stage 22 (22 mm) adopts the shape of

Capitolunate arthrodesis versus four-corner fusion for advanced wrist collapse: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Capitolunate fusion (CLF) has been proposed as a viable alternative to other motion-preserving techniques such as three-corner fusion (3CF) and four-corner fusion (4CF) for scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC). This study systematically reviewed the literature comparing clinical outcomes and complication profiles of CLF versus 4CF; a small number of three-corner fusion cases were included. METHODS: The PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for articles published between 1990 and 2025. Two independent

Which clinical features best predict occult scaphoid fractures? A systematic review of diagnostic test accuracy studies.

BACKGROUND: Plain radiographs cannot identify all scaphoid fractures; thus ED patients with a clinical suspicion of scaphoid injury often undergo immobilisation despite normal imaging. This study determined (1) the prevalence of scaphoid fracture among patients with a clinical suspicion of scaphoid injury with normal radiographs and (2) whether clinical features can identify patients that do not require immobilisation and further imaging. METHODS: This systematic review of diagnostic test accuracy studies included all study designs that evaluated predictors of scaphoid fracture among patients

A Review of the Use of 3D Printing Technology in Treatment of Scaphoid Fractures.

Background: Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is increasingly commercially viable for pre-surgical planning, intraoperative templating, jig creation and customised implant manufacture. The challenging nature of scaphoid fracture and nonunion surgery make it an obvious target. The aim of this review is to determine the use of 3D printed technologies in the treatment of scaphoid fractures. Methods: This is a review of the Medline, Embase and Cochrane Library databases examining studies aimed at therapeutic use of 3D printing, also known as rapid prototyping or additive technology, in th
