Feasibility of Microlearning for Improving the Self-Efficacy of Cancer Patients Managing Side Effects of Chemotherapy.

Lung cancer patients have a high symptom burden that negatively affects their quality of life. Increasing patient self-efficacy to deal with treatment side effects can ameliorate their symptom burden. Education programs can help enhance patient self-efficacy by giving patients more control over their condition through increased disease literacy. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of microlearning for delivering lung cancer patients' information on side effects of chemotherapy. Secondary objectives of the program are to understand the acceptability of microlearning for delivery this t

The Lived Experience of Adolescents in Homeless Families.

The experience of adolescent homelessness is best understood from the perspective of those experiencing it. Although there is existing literature on the experiences of street youths and on the risk factors of youth homelessness, little of it has explored the experience of adolescents in homeless families as well as their strengths and their resources. Through discourse and photography, the research described in this article explored the lived experience of a particular group of adolescents who were living with their homeless families. Through a lens of critical phenomenology using in-depth int

Introduction to the special section on stepped care models in psychotherapy.

Not all patients need the same type and intensity of intervention. Some may be helped greatly by reading a self-help book, watching an instructional video, or using a computer program. Others could benefit from a brief psychoeducational group conducted by a paraprofessional, and still others may require long-term individual treatment from a highly trained professional therapist with specialized expertise. In an environment of limited resources, it makes sense to provide all the time, expertise, and individual attention a patient needs, but not more. Stepped care models represent attempts to ma

Exhibiting failure toward building a growth mindset: a qualitative study of psychiatric trainees' experiences of a monthly reflective session.

BACKGROUND: Medical trainees frequently encounter academic, clinical, and personal setbacks, yet these experiences are often concealed due to fear of judgment and stigma. Providing a structured, psychologically safe space to share failures may help normalize setbacks, reduce shame, and foster a growth mindset. This study explored psychiatric trainees' experiences of the "Exhibition of Failure," a monthly reflective session designed to support open discussion of failure and promote personal and professional development. METHODS: The Exhibition of Failure was held monthly over one academic year

Lived experiences and perceptions of social support in diabetes self-management among patients, families, and friends in Ethiopia.

Type 2 diabetes is a major health issue in Ethiopia, where misunderstandings about its causes and treatment are widespread. Many people believe it is caused by emotional, significant life events and supernatural forces, which leads to stigma and poor management. Limited access to healthcare and cultural factors further contributed to inadequate self-care and dependence on alternative medicines. Involving family and friends in diabetes management can lead to better results by sharing care responsibilities and helping to overcome obstacles to effective management. This study explored the lived e

Early life trauma: An exploratory study of effects on OXTR and NR3C1 gene expression and nurturing self-efficacy in mothers of infants.

BACKGROUND: In animals, adverse early experience alters oxytocinergic and glucocorticoid activity and maternal behavior in adulthood. This preliminary study explored associations among childhood trauma (loss of a parent or sexual abuse in childhood), maternal self-efficacy, and leukocyte gene expression (mRNA) of oxytocin and glucocorticoid receptors (OXTR and NR3C1) in mothers of infants. METHODS: 62 mothers (20 with early life trauma) with healthy 3-month old infants reported maternal self-efficacy, depression, infant temperament, and overall social support; the effects of early trauma on t

Future self-views of aging and social activities: Domain-specific bidirectional links across adulthood.

How people anticipate their own aging may influence whether and how they stay socially engaged in later life. This study examined whether future self-views of aging predict self-reported social activities over time and whether social activities, in turn, shape individuals' future self-views of aging. Data were drawn from 459 German adults aged 30-80 years, assessed at three time points over a 10-year period. Participants reported their future self-views of aging in three social domains-family, friendship, and formal engagement-as well as their weekly hours spent in domain-matched social activi

The relationship between adolescents' swimming self-efficacy and high-risk behaviors: a chain mediating model based on latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among teenagers in our country. High-risk swimming behaviors show strong correlational linkage with adolescent drowning incidents. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 3,239 teenagers with an average age of 12.73 ± 1.54. The swimming self-efficacy scale, water safety knowledge scale, water safety skills scale, and swimming high-risk behavior scale were used. The latent profile analysis was employed to explore differences in high-risk swimming behaviors across subgroups of swimming self-efficacy, and a chain mediation model was

Development of a self-management intervention for stroke survivors with aphasia using co-production and behaviour change theory: An outline of methods and processes.

BACKGROUND: Self-management is a promising approach to improve quality of life after stroke. However, evidence for the appropriateness and effectiveness of self-management for stroke survivors with aphasia is limited. This article reports on the process used to develop a supported self-management intervention for stroke survivors with aphasia (SSWA) using co-production and behaviour change theory. Preparatory research included systematic reviews, and qualitative interviews and focus groups with SSWA, family members and speech and language therapists (SLTs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted

A descriptive study of medical and chiropractic patients with chronic low back pain and sciatica: management by physicians (practice activities) and patients (self-management).

BACKGROUND: A practice-based study of ambulatory patients with low back pain noted a long-term outcome advantage for self-referred chiropractic (DC) patients over medical (MD) patients within a subgroup of patients with chronic low back pain and radiating pain below the knee. The frequency of self-care education by physicians in both provider cohorts coupled with current thinking on management of chronic low back pain led to an exploration and description of physicians' noncore practice activities and patients' self-management attitudes and behaviors. METHODS: A longitudinal, practice-based,

Factors influencing the intention of women with perinatal depression and their spouses to seek professional psychological help: a cross-sectional latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Seeking professional psychological help can improve outcomes for women with perinatal depression (PND). However, the use of professional psychological help-seeking behaviors for women with PND is not promising. Spouses are important sources of support and play a decision-making role in the process of seeking professional psychological help for women with PND. Exploring the factors that influence couples' intention to seek professional psychological help is important for developing effective interventions. This study aims to investigate the level and latent profiles of intention to

Structural Changesofthe Right Fibrous Trigone as a Risk Factor for Conduction Disturbance After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

BACKGROUND: The right fibrous trigone, which the His bundle penetrates, is part of the subaortic area adjacent to the membranous septum. Structural alterations of the right fibrous trigone may cause conduction disturbance as a result of compression in this area after transcatheter aortic valve implantation. This study analyzed the hypothesis of whether imaging parameters of the RFT could predict the risk of conduction disturbance after transcatheter aortic valve implantation. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 209 patients who underwent transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantationat

Destined for Greatness: A Family-Based Stress Management Intervention for African-American Mothers and their Children.

RATIONALE: African-American mothers in the U.S. experience high rates of stress, placing them at risk for depression, anxiety, and preterm births, and their children at risk for poor social-emotional development later in childhood. Yet, few studies have developed and tested family-based interventions that target optimal management of stress in this population. OBJECTIVE: The current mixed methods study examined whether a six-week family-based intervention (e.g., cognitive behavioral stress management intervention component for mothers and mindfulness-based kindness curriculum for their childr

Independent learning modules enhance student performance and understanding of anatomy.

Didactic lessons are only one part of the multimodal teaching strategies used in gross anatomy courses today. Increased emphasis is placed on providing more opportunities for students to develop lifelong learning and critical thinking skills during medical training. In a pilot program designed to promote more engaged and independent learning in anatomy, self-study modules were introduced to supplement human gross anatomy instruction at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. Modules use three-dimensional constructs to help students understand complex anatomical regions. Reso

The iBobbly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander app project: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Suicide amongst Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities occurs at twice the rate of the general population and, with significant barriers to treatment, help-seeking prior to a suicide attempt is low. This trial aims to test the effectiveness of an app (iBobbly) designed with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for reducing suicidal ideation. METHODS/DESIGN: This is a two-arm randomised controlled trial that will compare iBobbly to a wait-list control condition. The trial aims to recruit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants aged 16 years
