BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the characteristics of event-related potentials induced by facial emotion recognition in patients with first-episode schizophrenia and in their siblings.
METHODS: In this case-control study, 30 first-episode schizophrenia patients, 26 siblings, and 30 healthy controls were enrolled. They completed facial emotion recognition tasks from the Ekman Standard Faces Database as an induction for evoked potentials. Evoked potential data were obtained using a 64-channel electroencephalography system. Average evoked potential waveforms were computed from epochs fo…

BACKGROUND: The distributed connectivity among brain regions is in a constant state of flux, even when a subject is at rest. This instability (temporal variability), when optimal, may contribute to efficient cross-network communications. We investigate the role of this variability in the genetic diathesis and symptom expression of schizophrenia.
METHODS: Resting state functional MRI data acquired from 116 subjects (28 patients with schizophrenia, 28 siblings and 60 matched healthy controls). Using a sliding-window dynamic connectivity approach, we quantified the variability of whole-brain con…

Although AOA1 (ataxia oculomotor apraxia1) is one of the most common causes of autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias in Japanese population … the cells of all human body tissues and different mutations had been discovered. Here we report two siblings (a girl and a boy) of consanguineous parents visited at Mofid Pediatrics Hospital in 2015, with history of gait ataxia, titubation, tremor, and oculomotor apraxia around five yr old and after that. The brother showed symptoms of disease earlier and …

BACKGROUND: Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare, autosomal recessive condition caused by mutations in CLDN16 or CLDN19, which encode for tight junction proteins, claudin-16 and claudin-19, respectively. This condition often has a delayed diagnosis in patients with no prior family history due to a lack of specific clinical symptoms. Description of case, diagnosis, and treatment: A 4-year, 10-month-old Caucasian boy presented with failure to thrive, developmental delay, and ocular findings consisting of horizontal nystagmus, bilateral macular staphy

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between cesarean section (CS) and type 1 diabetes (T1D), and if the association remains after ac … condly, conditional logistic regression for sibling-control analyses. The sibling analysis included siblings who were discordant for both mode of delivery and T1D.
RESULTS: In the cohort analyses (N = 2 638 083), there was an increased risk of childhood T1D among children born by elective CS (adjusted relative risk [RR] = 1.15 [95% confidence interval: 1. …

BACKGROUND: Previous familial segregation studies supported that developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a multifactorial genetic disease. However, the exact extent of genetic effects has not been fully evaluated, especially in Asian population. The aim of this study is to estimate the sibling recurrent risk and heritability of DDH in a large Chinese cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four hundred and twenty-nine DDH probands and 534 matched normal controls were recruited from a screening programme for DDH, including 628 siblings in families of probands and 889 siblings in those of controls, …

The association between low birth weight and schizophrenia has been suggested by many studies. Small for gestational age (SGA) is a measure used as a proxy for intrauterine growth restriction. We aim to examine if children who are born SGA are at increased risk of developing schizophrenia and whether an association may be explained by factors shared among siblings. We linked 3 population-based registers: the Danish National Medical Birth Register, the Danish Psychiatric Central Register, and the Danish Civil Registration register to identify all persons born between 1978 and 2000. A nested cas…

PURPOSE: To reevaluate the effect of isolated teratozoospermia on IVF and determine if there was any therapeutic benefit to isolated teratozoospermia by ICSI, since there are no widely accepted criteria for the treatment technique about isolated teratozoospermia.
METHODS: A total of 441 couples with >20 million and progressive motility >30 % sperm undergoing their first IVF/ICSI cycle were included in the study between 2008 and 2010, for whom at least 8 oocytes were retrived. Isolated teratozoospermia was diagnosed in 183 of the included couples, and the rest couples (normal sperm morphology)

Celiac Disease (CD) is a polygenic trait, and HLA genes explain less than half of the genetic variation. Through large GWAs more than 40 associated non-HLA genes were identified, but they give a small contribution to the heritability of the disease. The aim of this study is to improve the estimate of the CD risk in siblings, by adding to HLA a small set of non-HLA genes. One-hundred fifty-seven Italian families with a confirmed CD case and at least one other sib and both parents were recruited. Among 249 sibs, 29 developed CD in a 6 year follow-up period. All individuals were typed for HLA and…

Neurological soft signs (NSSs) and minor physical anomalies (MPAs) are consistently found at higher rates in individuals with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls. However, limited research has been conducted on these traits among the biological relatives of these patients. We aimed to identify the possible origins of these traits in schizophrenia by exploring them in patients with schizophrenia, their healthy siblings and normal controls. Ninety-six patients with schizophrenia, their 66 non-psychotic siblings and 52 healthy subjects were studied. Measures included the Neurological Evalu…

We describe outcomes after human leukocyte antigen-matched sibling bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for 179 patients with β-thalassemia major. The median age at transplantation was 7 years and the median follow-up was 6 years. The distribution of Pesaro risk class I, II, and III categories was 2%, 42%, and 36%, respectively. The day 30 cumulative incidence of neutrophil recovery and day 100 platelet recovery were 90% and 86%, respectively. Seventeen patients had graft failure, which was fatal in 11. Six of 9 patients with graft failure are alive after a second transplantation. The day 100 pro

AIM: To study the sex ratio (proportion of males) in siblings of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) as children.
METHOD: In the current study, we extended previous studies dealing with the androgen theory of autism and examined sex ratios in the siblings of 326 individuals with ASD (245 males, 81 females) who had been consecutively assessed at two Danish university clinics of child psychiatry during the 25-year period from 1960 to 1985.
RESULTS: Among the 513 siblings, 300 were males and 213 females. This yields a sex ratio of 0.585, which is significantly higher tha…

UNLABELLED: Studies have used siblings to verify subject reports of retrospective data and examined variables influencing subject-sibling agreement, but questions remain. From 1998 to 2000, we examined a community sample of women (N = 143) in a metropolitan area, aged 21-60, balanced by race, parental alcoholism, and social class, as well as their siblings, using standardized, self-administered questionnaires and an interview.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS: Do subject and sibling reports agree? Do reports vary by subject characteristics, or the type of childhood experience? Descriptive statistics showed…

Freud's interpretation of Little Hans's "phantasy of the two giraffes" is pivotal to his oedipal analysis that Hans has inchoate desires for sexual intercourse with his mother. Bowlby argued that Freud's focus on his oedipal theory led him to ignore preoedipal attachment-related factors that have equal plausibility in explaining the clinical data. However, Bowlby did not attempt to apply the attachment perspective to the interpretation of Hans's fantasies that form the core of the case material. A microanalysis of Hans's giraffe fantasy and the evidence used to support Freud's claims about it

Height has been used for more than a century as a model by which to understand quantitative genetic variation in humans. We report that the entire genome appears to contribute to its additive genetic variance. We used genotypes and phenotypes of 11,214 sibling pairs from three countries to partition additive genetic variance across the genome. Using genome scans to estimate the proportion of the genomes of each chromosome from siblings that were identical by descent, we estimated the heritability of height contributed by each of the 22 autosomes and the X chromosome. We show that additive gene…
