Clinical Significance of Periurethral Calcification According to the Location in Men With Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and a Small Prostate Volume.

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of periurethral calcification (PUC) according to its location on uroflowmetric parameters and urinary symptoms in patients with small prostate volume (PV). METHODS: Records were obtained from a prospectively maintained database of first-visit men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Patients whose PV was >30 mL were excluded to elucidate more clearly the impact of PUC on LUTS. A total of 539 patients were enrolled in the study. The prostatic urethra was examined by transrectal ultrasonography for PUC, and the location of PUC was divided into 3 areas (proxima

An update on the occurrence of flies (Diptera: Muscidae, Calliphoridae) and sucking lice (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) of veterinary importance in Malta: First record of Lucilia cuprina and Linognathus africanus.

To obtain new data on the species diversity, host associations and spatiotemporal occurrence of flies and blood-sucking lice of veterinary importance in Malta, ectoparasites were collected at cattle, sheep and goat, pig farms, as well as dog shelters, and in two places in the absence of domestic animals. The species were identified morphologically, but voucher specimens were also analyzed with molecular-phylogenetic methods following DNA extraction. Altogether 3,095 flies (Diptera: Muscidae, Calliphoridae) were collected at farms and kennels near domestic animals, as well as 37 blowflies (Call

Maternal morbidity and perinatal outcomes among women in rural versus urban areas.

BACKGROUND: Most studies examining geographic barriers to maternity care in industrialized countries have focused solely on fetal and neonatal outcomes. We examined the association between rural residence and severe maternal morbidity, in addition to perinatal mortality and morbidity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study of all women who gave birth in British Columbia, Canada, between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2010. We compared maternal mortality and severe morbidity (e.g., eclampsia) and adverse perinatal outcomes (e.g., perinatal death) between women residing

Development and validation of a multi-parametric MRI diagnostic model for differentiating hemangioma-like metastases from small (< 3 cm) hepatic hemangiomas: a size-based subgroup analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioma-like metastases (HM) are rare but treacherous hypervascular malignancies that mimic the imaging features of benign hepatic hemangiomas (HH), particularly when lesions are small (< 3 cm). This resemblance creates a "diagnostic grey zone," often leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment delays. This study aims to develop and evaluate a multi-parametric MRI model to accurately distinguish small HM from HH and assess its diagnostic performance across different lesion size subgroups. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 149 lesions (81 HMs in 37 patients and

U-Shaped Association Between Left Ventricular Dimension and Mortality in Patients With Heart Failure.

IMPORTANCE: Left ventricular structural assessment is fundamental in heart failure (HF). However, the independent prognostic value of left ventricular size beyond its association with ejection fraction remains poorly defined in real-world, large-scale populations. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between left ventricular dimension and mortality risk within a large, nationwide cohort with HF. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a nationwide cohort study using data from the Chinese Cardiovascular Association Database-Heart Failure Center Registry. Patients were enrolled from J

Heart Transplantation in Adult Fontan Patients: New Insights from Fontan-Associated Liver Disease Beyond Traditional Predictors.

BACKGROUND: Fontan patients are considered high risk for heart transplantation (HT) owing to their complex anatomy, multiple prior chest entries, and universal Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD). The impact of FALD and other preoperative factors remains, however, uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We sought to identify factors associated with 90-day mortality after isolated HT in adults with Fontan circulation, with particular focus on the relationship between liver-related parameters and post-transplant outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of all adult Fontan patients undergoing isolated

Clinical-imaging fusion model for risk assessment of clinically significant prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy among men worldwide. Its biological heterogeneity challenges conventional imaging-based risk assessment and complicates biopsy decision-making. Although advanced artificial intelligence may improve risk stratification, medical imaging applications are often limited by small sample sizes. Vision foundation models, with strong transferability in data-constrained settings, offer a promising approach to improving prostate cancer risk assessment, guiding personalized treatment, and reducing overdiagnosis. METHODS: A robus

Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Quantitative 3D Analysis of Distal Radioulnar Ligament Insertion Footprints of the Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex With Interactive Validation.

OBJECTIVES: The distal radioulnar ligaments (DRULs) serve as primary stabilizers to the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). Existing cadaveric studies report heterogeneous morphometric data of the three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) and the ulnar footprints of the DRULs due to methodological variations and small sample sizes, limiting the translation of precise anatomical knowledge to clinical practice. This study quantitatively evaluated the 3D anatomy of the TFCC and the insertions of both superficial and deep DRULs components using three different meth

Plasmodium DEH is ER-localized and crucial for oocyst mitotic division during malaria transmission.

Cells use fatty acids (FAs) for membrane biosynthesis, energy storage, and the generation of signaling molecules. 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydratase-DEH-is a key component of very long chain fatty acid synthesis. Here, we further characterized in-depth the location and function of DEH, applying in silico analysis, live cell imaging, reverse genetics, and ultrastructure analysis using the mouse malaria model Plasmodium berghei DEH is evolutionarily conserved across eukaryotes, with a single DEH in Plasmodium spp. and up to three orthologs in the other eukaryotes studied. Low-Grade Gastric Fibromyxoid Sarcoma in an Adult Female: A Rare Case Report.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS) is an uncommon soft tissue tumor that often masquerades as benign due to its deceptively mild histopathological appearance. Predominantly arising from the deep soft tissues of the extremities and trunk, LGFMS is exceptionally uncommon in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. While most documented cases have been found in the small intestine and colon, only one prior case has been reported in the stomach involving an elderly Japanese woman. In this report, we present a compelling case of gastric LGFMS in a 21-year-old female who experienced mild hematemesis and

Construction of a predictive model for postoperative pancreatic fistula following pancreaticoduodenectomy and an exploration of inflammatory biomarker associations.

BACKGROUND: Clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) remains a significant cause of morbidity after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). Existing predictive tools, such as the Fistula risk score (FRS), demonstrate inconsistent performance. This study aimed to develop a nomogram with superior predictive accuracy for CR-POPF. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analysed 1,026 PD patients (70% training, 30% validation). Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and multivariate logistic regression were used to identify independent predictors and construct a dyna
