Factor structure of the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scales (TAPES) with individuals with acquired upper limb amputations.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the factorial composition of the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scales (TAPES), a multidimensional assessment of adaptation to amputation and prosthesis, for use with individuals with acquired upper limb amputations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey of members of the British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association. RESULTS: A total of 101 individuals (men, 100; mean age, 73.8 yrs, SD 11.94) with acquired upper limb amputations (98 traumatic cases) completed the TAPES. Principal components analyses with varimax rotation revealed four psychosocial subscales

An exploration of the extent to which attending Headway enhances quality of life after traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: This paper explores the perception of quality of life (QOL) of four men following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the effects of their injury on family, social and working life. METHOD: It also highlights their on-going difficulties 6, 8, 10 and 11 years post injury and that long term support is not available from rehabilitation services often due to the NHS financial restraints. RESULTS: Participants in this study have highlighted: (a) the need for long term support over an unspecified continuum; (b) the value of peer support; (c) the value of an understanding environment prepared

The Indochinese Psychiatry Clinic: trauma and refugee mental health treatment in the 1990s.

The Indochinese Psychiatry Clinic (IPC), located in Boston, was founded in 1981 to meet the special needs of traumatized Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Laotian refugees resettling in the Boston area. Over the past 16 years, IPC has pioneered the field of refugee mental health and the treatment of the psychological and social sequelae of mass violence and torture. IPC developed the bicultural model of psychiatric treatment of refugees suffering from trauma-related mental disorders, which utilizes a multidisciplinary, bicultural team approach that emphasizes understanding the patient's trauma histor

Appraisal, coping, and social support as mediators of well-being in black and white family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) commonly have high levels of psychological distress. Black caregivers often report less depression than White caregivers, but the process underlying this difference is poorly understood. With the use of a stress process model, 123 White and 74 Black family caregivers of patients with AD and other progressive dementias were studied. Black caregivers appraised patient problems as less stressful and reported higher self-efficacy in managing caregiving problems and less depression than did White caregivers. White and Black caregivers also

Rural people utilising city hospitals: issues for service provision.

The geographic distribution of health services in Australia means that rural people may need to travel long distances from their homes to obtain specialist services. Because sophisticated and expensive medical technologies are centralised, it is not uncommon for rural people to need to access metropolitan health services for many forms of treatment. This study sought to investigate the experiences of central Victorian people for whom illness or injury necessitated their admission to metropolitan hospitals. Because of distance from both metropolitan hospitals and social support structures, thes

BodyScreen: A pilot evaluation of a mobile app intervention targeting social media engagement and eating disorder risk in adolescent and young adult women.

Appearance-focused social media use contributes to body dissatisfaction and elevated eating disorder (ED) risk in adolescents and young adults. Scalable, digitally delivered interventions targeting social media behaviours alongside psychological risk factors remain limited. This pilot trial evaluated BodyScreen, a 4-week mobile app designed to reduce maladaptive social media engagement while promoting self-esteem and body appreciation. Eighty adolescent and young adult women in Canada aged 15-29 with elevated ED risk participated in a single-arm pilot trial. Assessments were conducted pre- and

Invisible wounds: Social victimization, coping strategies, and psychological distress among widowed Syrian refugees in Jordan and Türkiye.

This study investigates how social victimization, coping strategies, and social-structural factors are associated with mental health outcomes among widowed Syrian refugee women in Jordan and Türkiye. Guided by intersectionality and conservation of resources theories, it examines whether discrimination, bullying, profiling, abuse, and coping (problem-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance) are related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and general psychological distress and whether these associations differ by host country. A cross-sectional survey was condu

Perceived social support and psychological wellbeing among vocational college students: the serial mediating roles of school belonging, academic self-efficacy, and psychological resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Psychological wellbeing is an important concern for vocational college students, who face academic demands, skills training, practicum requirements, and school-to-work transition pressures. This study examined whether perceived social support is associated with psychological wellbeing through a serial mediation process involving school belonging, academic self-efficacy, and psychological resilience. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among vocational college students from Zhejiang, Chongqing, and Shanghai, China. A total of 500 questionnaires were collected,

Reciprocal relationships between social support and depression among military cadets in Taiwan: findings from a long-term cross-lagged panel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the reciprocal relationship between social support and depressive symptoms among military cadets in Taiwan, a population facing unique academic and military pressures. While emerging adults are prone to mental health challenges, they encounter additional stressors such as strict hierarchies and separation from family. Social support is known to be a protective factor, yet its long-term effects and bidirectional relationship with depression remain underexplored, particularly in collectivist military cultures where mental health may be stigmatised. Using a cross

"Estar Bien Consigo Mismo" and the Mental Health of Latino Farmworkers in NC.

PROBLEM: Latino Farmworkers (LFW) in the United States experience high levels of depression, stress, and poor mental health. Services and social support resources are limited due to structural and economic factors. Research studies using standardized surveys and scales provide important information. However, they may not fully capture how mental health is socially constructed and navigated by migrant and seasonal farmworkers due to linguistic and cultural factors. Therefore, there is a need to develop research protocols and data collection instruments that are culturally appropriate and can de

Exploring mutual aid-based community engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case study of community group buying in China.

BACKGROUND: Community mutual aid is a form of community engagement involving multiple stakeholders working together to provide both material and emotional support. During the COVID-19 pandemic in China, community group buying (CGB) exhibited distinct features of community mutual aid, reflected in its flexible product supply and spontaneous neighborhood support. However, the mechanisms driving the emergence of such mutual aid practices remain insufficiently explored. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative research design combining ethnographic observation and interpretive case analysis to

Factors in the Mental Health of Children from Low-Income Families in the United States: An Application of the Multiple Disadvantage Model.

Objective: This study on children in low-income families explored whether their mental health problems are attributable to distress from five socioeconomic disadvantage factors playing roles in the multiple disadvantage model. These factors are social disorganization, social structural factors, social relationships, health/mental health, and access to care factors. Methods: The present study employed data extracted from the 2021 National Survey of Children's Health, describing 7540 low-income children. Weighted logistic regression was conducted (with robust standard errors). Results: It showed

Structural equation modeling of symptom clusters and health-related quality of life among patients with advanced colorectal cancer receiving chemotherapy in Bangkok, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) receiving chemotherapy experience multiple symptoms due to both disease progression and complications of treatment. These symptoms affect the physical, psychological, and social aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Additionally, contextual variables of patients may also impact HRQoL. OBJECTIVE: To test a structural equation model on symptom clusters, contextual variables, and HRQoL in patients with advanced CRC receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from 300 patients with adv

A scoping review of the determinants of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder in South Africa: an intersectional perspective.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) affects babies born to mothers who consume alcohol while pregnant. South Africa has the highest prevalence of FASD in the world. We review the social determinants underpinning FASD in South Africa and add critical insight from an intersectional feminist perspective. We undertook a scoping review, guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews guidelines. Drawing from EBSCOhost and PubMed, 95 articles were screened, with 21 selected for analysis. We used the intersectionality wheel to conceptualize how

Breaking the stigma: the role of family support in hepatitis B management from a public health education perspective.

Hepatitis B remains a major global public health challenge. Beyond its clinical burden, hepatitis B-related stigma persists as a multilevel social process embedded within relational and institutional structures. Despite advances in vaccination and antiviral therapy, individuals living with hepatitis B continue to experience psychological distress and social marginalization shaped by stigma. Family systems represent a central relational context in which infection identity is interpreted and negotiated. Through disclosure practices, identity organization, and responses to institutional pressures

Health inequities and social determinants of health in refugee and immigrant communities.

This article evaluates and elucidates the intersections across social and economic determinants of health and social structures that maintain current inequities and structural violence with a focus on the impact on imMigrants (immigrants and migrants), refugees, and those who remain invisible (e.g., people without immigration status who reside in the United States) from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Psychology has a history of treating individuals and families without adequately considering how trauma is cyclically and generationally maintained by structural violence, ine…

Sexual dimorphism in the social behaviour of Cntnap2-null mice correlates with disrupted synaptic connectivity and increased microglial activity in the anterior cingulate cortex.

A biological understanding of the apparent sex bias in autism is lacking. Here we have identified Cntnap2 KO mice as a model system to help better understand this dimorphism. Using this model, we observed social deficits in juvenile male KO mice only. These male-specific social deficits correlated with reduced spine densities of Layer 2/3 and Layer 5 pyramidal neurons in the Anterior Cingulate Cortex, a forebrain region prominently associated with the control of social behaviour. Furthermore, in male KO mice, microglia showed an increased activated morphology and phagocytosis of synaptic struc

The trauma of peer victimization: psychophysiological and emotional characteristics of memory imagery in subjects with social anxiety disorder.

The study investigated the role of an associative information network as a mechanism underlying the relation of peer victimization and social anxiety disorder (SAD). A sample of N = 80 was divided according to diagnosis (SAD vs. no diagnosis) and amount of peer victimization (low vs. high). Responses to memory of a personally experienced aversive social situation and to imagining a standardized negative social situation were assessed. In terms of skin conductance level, subjects with SAD and peer victimization were more reactive to the memory script than the other three groups while responses

Psychosocial correlates and predictors of AIDS risk behaviors, abortion, and drug use among a community sample, of young adult women.

Relations among latent constructs of Social Conformity, Sensation Seeking, Polydrug Use, Sexual Experience, Abortion, and Risky AIDS Behaviors were examined among a community sample of women (N = 438, mean age = 25.5 years) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and predictive structural equation models (SEM). In the CFA, Risky AIDS Behavior was strongly related to more Polydrug Use and less Social Conformity and modestly related to Sexual Experience and Abortions. In SEMs, Social Conformity significantly predicted less Risky AIDS Behavior and less Polydrug Use but did not predict Abortions.
