[Computed tomography of primary and secondary tumors of the eye and orbit].

Only computed tomography (CT) is able to demonstrate ocular, orbital and peri-orbital soft tissues, calcification and bony structures directly and without superimposition of other tissues. 165 patients with tumours of the eye or orbit have been examined by CT and in 143 the diagnosis has been confirmed. The value of CT lies in its ability to demonstrate tumours and to define their orbital and extra-orbital extension and their relationship to neighbouring structures. In 51% of the lesions there was bone destruction and in 6% intracranial extension. Density measurements before and after intraven

Computed tomography of sacral and presacral lesions.

Forty-two patients with various sacral and presacral lesions were examined by computed tomography (CT). CT was sensitive in detecting intraosseous neoplasms and presacral soft tissue masses and in seven cases identified lesions not visible on plain films. The total extent of each lesion was readily determined using CT. However, CT is diagnostically nonspecific and differentiation between primary and secondary tumors of the sacrum in generally not possible from the CT appearance alone. CT is also of considerable use in the evaluation of several non-neoplastic conditions of the sacrum, including

CT manifestations of radiation-induced change in chest tissue.

The computed tomographic appearance of acute and chronic radiation change in the thorax is described. Acute radiation pneumonitis demonstrates patchy, confluent regions of increased pulmonary attenuation. Chronic changes include soft tissue density fibrotic changes that blend smoothly with the pleural surfaces and adjacent mediastinal structures. Also seen are bronchiectatic changes and distortion of normal intrathoracic anatomic relationships. Both the acute and chronic changes usually make linear lateral margins with adjacent aerated lung. Development of a discrete mass or focal cavitation a

Experimental and numerical investigation on soft tissue dynamic response due to turbulence-induced arterial vibration.

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is a serious cardiovascular disorder. The arterial occlusion leads to turbulent flow and arterial sound generation on the inner vessel wall. Stenosis-induced vibro-acoustic waves propagate through the surrounding soft tissues and reach the skin surface. In this study, the feasibility of noninvasive acoustic detection of the peripheral arterial stenosis is investigated using the vibration responses by means of experimental and computational models. Latex rubber tube is used to model the artery, and it is surrounded by a tissue mimicking phantom made of bovi

A review of fluid-structure interaction simulation for patients with sleep related breathing disorders with obstructive sleep.

Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common breathing disorders. Undiagnosed sleep apnea is a hidden health crisis to the patient and it could raise the risk of heart diseases, high blood pressure, depression and diabetes. The throat muscle (i.e., tongue and soft palate) relax narrows the airway and causes the blockage of the airway in breathing. To understand this phenomenon computational fluid dynamics method has emerged as a handy tool to conduct the modeling and analysis of airflow characteristics. The comprehensive fluid-structure interaction method provides the realistic visualizat

Computational model of the human elbow and forearm: application to complex varus instability.

Computational modeling is an effective way to predict the response of complex systems to perturbations that are difficult or impossible to measure experimentally. A computational model of the human elbow was developed wherein joint function was dictated by three-dimensional osteoarticular interactions, soft tissue constraints, muscle action, and external loading. The model was validated against two cadaveric experiments that examined the significance of coronoid process (CP) fractures, lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) ruptures, and radial head (RH) resection in varus stability. The mod

Imaging Diagnosis: Atypical CT Appearance of a Multilobular Osteochondrosarcoma in a Dog.

A 9-year-old female spayed boxer presented for a dorsal cranial mass. Cytology diagnosed a sarcoma. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the head revealed a symmetrical, soft tissue attenuating mass with subtle mineralization and a contrast-enhancing capsule at the dorsal calvarium. There was adjacent frontal bone lysis and contrast enhancement of the parietal lobe. This supported a sarcoma of bone or cartilage origin. Postmortem examination additionally revealed a pulmonary tumor embolus. A final diagnosis of grade III multilobular osteochondrosarcoma (MLO) was made. This is the firs

[A Case of Intra-Abdominal Desmoid Tumor after Laparoscopic Resection of Colon Cancer].

An 84-year-old man underwent laparoscopic descending colon resection for colon cancer with stage Ⅰ. Follow-up computed tomography(CT), 18 months after surgery showed a soft tissue density nodular mass, 30 mm in size, in the small intestinal mesentery. The surgical resection of the tumor was performed after a thorough examination. Histopathological examination showed spindle-shaped fibroblasts and abundant collagen fibers. Immunohistochemical staining was negative for c-kit and CD34 and positive for α-SMA and β-catenin. From the above, this tumor was diagnosed as intra-abdominal desmoid tumor.

Is Advanced Imaging a Must in the Assessment of Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity?

Advanced imaging modalities have, in very recent years, enabled a considerable leap in understanding progressive collapsing foot deformity, evolving from a simple confirmation of clinical diagnostic using basic measurements to minute understanding of soft tissue and bone involvements. MRI and weight-bearing cone-beam computed tomography are enabling the development of new 3-dimensional measurement modalities. The identification of key articular and joint markers of advanced collapse will allow surgeons to better indicate treatments and assess chances of success with conservative therapies and

Diagnosis of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder in a resource-limited setting: a case report and review of the literature.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal soft tissue tumor without attachment to the bone and is able to produce osteoid or cartilaginous matrix. Rendering a definitive diagnosis may pose a challenge particularly in a resource-limited setting. We report a case of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder presenting with hematuria, dysuria and positive history of schistosomal contact. Computed tomography intravenous urogram revealed a large heterogeneous mass at the right superolateral aspect of the urinary bladder. Morphological evaluation of the biopsy and a minimal panel

Full-Mouth Rehabilitation with Bone-Level Implant Guide and Monolithic Zirconia Prosthesis for Fibular Free Flap Reconstruction: A Case History Report.

The fibular free flap (FFF) approach is the preferred option for reconstruction of segmental mandibular deficiencies. Fixed dental prostheses are recommended for patients who have undergone FFF jaw surgery to improve quality of life, but treatment of these patients with an implant-supported prosthesis is challenging because of the thin bone and thick soft tissue in the fibula. This case history reports the use of a bone-level implant guide fabricated with a computer-aided system and milled customized long abutments for implant placement and prosthodontic procedures. Advanced digital technologi

Tracheobronchial involvement of mantle cell lymphoma.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare type of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that commonly affects extranodal sites; however, tracheobronchial involvement is rare. We report the case of a 65-year-old male who presented with cough and dyspnoea. A chest computed tomography (CT) revealed irregular wall thickening of the trachea and bilateral bronchi and bilateral bronchiectasis. A bronchoscopy revealed a diffuse irregular surface of the tracheal and bilateral bronchial mucosa and polyposis-like lesions. He was diagnosed with MCL based on an endobronchial biopsy, and then, the diagnosis was confirme

A case of retroperitoneal fibrosis responding to steroid therapy.

A 69-year-old man presented at the hospital with complaints of prolonged stomach pain extending from the week prior. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a low density area in the retroperitoneal space. A radiologist diagnosed the patient with retroperitoneal fibrosis. One week later, an enhanced CT revealed an exponential increase of the low density area and slight right hydronephrosis. Upon admission, prednisolone administration was initiated at a dose of 40mg/day. The size of the retroperitoneal soft tissue mass decreased gradually. Although the dose of prednisolone was tapered to 5mg

The Role of PET/MR Imaging in Precision Medicine.

Fluorodeoxyglucose PET and PET/computed tomography have gained acceptance in the evaluation of disease. Nontargeted tracers have been used in the diagnosis of certain malignancies but may not be sensitive or specific enough to become standard of care. Newer targeted PET tracers have been developed that target disease-specific biomarkers, and allow accurate and sensitive detection of disease. Combined with the capabilities of MR imaging to evaluate soft tissue, precision imaging with PET/MR imaging can change the diagnosis. This article discusses specific areas in which precision imaging with n

Magnetic Resonance of Pelvic and Gastrointestinal Emergencies.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is gaining increased acceptance in the emergency setting despite the continued dominance of computed tomography. MR has the advantages of more precise tissue characterization, superior soft tissue contrast, and a lack of ionizing radiation. Traditional barriers to emergent MR are being overcome by streamlined imaging protocols and newer rapid-acquisition sequences. As the utilization of MR imaging in the emergency department increases, a strong working knowledge of the MR appearance of the most commonly encountered abdominopelvic pathologies is essential. [Correction of the Thumb in Apert Syndrome - Modified Dome Osteotomy and Bilobed Flap].

Children with Apert syndrome have extensive malformations of the extremities and the head. The thumb in Apert syndrome is always short with radial deviation and the first web space is narrowed and flattened. These thumbs can be corrected in a simple manner by modified dome osteotomy of the proximal phalanx combined with soft tissue coverage using a bilobed flap with simultaneous widening of the first web space. A preoperative multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) angiography scan helps in planning the surgical procedures. This article describes the surgical technique and the results in 6 hand

Coronary periarteritis in a patient with multi-organ IgG4-related disease.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease is a recently described systemic clinicopathological entity characterized by immunoglobulin G4-producing plasmacytic infiltration of tissue and frequently by elevated serum immunoglobulin G4 concentration. Manifestations of this disease have been documented in nearly all organs and locations, but coronary artery involvement is not widely recognized. We report the coronary findings of a patient with multi-organ immunoglobulin G4-related disease. Non-electrocardiogram-gated computed tomography of the chest demonstrated nodular and rind-like periarterial soft tis

Nasal lobular capillary hemangioma.

Nasal lobular capillary hemangioma is a rare benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses. This lesion is believed to grow rapidly in size over time. The exact etiopathogenesis is still a dilemma. We discuss a case of nasal lobular capillary hemangioma presenting with a history of epistaxis. Contrast enhanced computed tomography of paranasal sinuses revealed an intensely enhancing soft-tissue mass in the left nasal cavity and left middle and inferior meati with no obvious bony remodeling or destruction. We present imaging and pathologic features of nasal lobular capillary hemangioma and differentiate

Three-dimensional analysis of the airway with cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, using a cone-beam computed tomography system, we evaluated the airways of 30 adults. METHODS: The shapes of the 3-dimensional volume of the airway were analyzed and compared among the subjects by using surface superimposition software techniques. RESULTS: The airway had the greatest variability in the hypopharynx, in the region below the epiglottis, and above the vocal folds. Moderate variation was apparent at the nares, behind the soft palate, and at the base of the tongue. Conservation of form was seen at the central portion of the nasal airway surrounding the

[Acute neck pain in an elderly patient].

Case report of an 85-year-old patient with acute neck pain and elevated parameters of inflammation in the blood. The symptoms and the MRI of the cervical spine were misleading and mimicked an infectious spondylitis with abscess formation in the prevertebral soft tissue and the dens. Lack of improvement following intravenous antibiotics led to an investigation of the spine by computed tomography showing typical calcifications of the transverse ligament around the odontoid process. Crowned dens syndrome, the cervical manifestation of calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate deposition disease, was diagno
