The complexations of sulfasalazine (H3Suz) with some of transition metals have been investigated. Three types of complexes, [Mn(HSuz)-2(H2O)4] x 2H2O, [M(HSuz)-2(H2O)2] x xH2O (M=Hg(II), ZrO(II) and VO(II), x=4, 8 and 6, respectively) and [M(HSuz)-2(Cl)(H2O)3] x xH2O (M=Cr(III) and Y(III), x=5 and 6, respectively) were obtained and characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The synthesis of N-salicyloyl-N-benzyl-thiourea and 2,2-dimethyl-4-oxo-6-methoxy-benzo-1,3-dioxin are described. They were studied for their antiviral, antiproliferative and antimicrobial activities in vitro. N-salicyloyl-N-benzyl-thiourea exhibited significant activity against Gram-positive bacteria and against influenza viruses types A/Philippine/H3N2, A/Chilli/H1N1 and B/Paraha, as well as against K562 cell proliferation. By contrast, no such activity was demonstrated by 2,2-dimethyl-4-oxo-6-methoxy-benzo-1,3-dioxin.

After administration of SKF 525-A to rats a portion of the cytochrome P-450 in hepatic microsomes was found in the reduced form as a stable complex absorbing at 452 nm.
