Reconstruction of the lip is a necessary procedure when lip tumors are excised. Although many good techniques have been described, they ofte … ured to the corner of the incised skin. We followed the patients for 36 months and found that their speech intelligibility, sensation, mobility, and aesthetic satisfaction were preserved. The scars were also less pronounced compared to flaps, and there were no signs of edema or drooling. In conclusion, our technique offers many advantages for moderate defects of lower l …

It is well known that ageing and noise exposure are important causes of sensorineural hearing loss, and can result in damage of the outer hair cells or other structures of the inner ear, including synaptic damage to the auditory nerve (AN), i.e., cochlear synaptopathy (CS). Despite the suspected high prevalence of CS among people with self-reported hearing difficulties but seemingly normal hearing, conventional hearing-aid algorithms do not compensate for the functional deficits associated with CS. Here, we present and evaluate a number of auditory signal-processing strategies designed to maxi

The objective was to determine the effects of two frequency-lowering algorithms (frequency transposition, FT, and frequency compression, FC) on audibility, speech identification, and subjective benefit, for people with high-frequency hearing loss and extensive dead regions (DRs) in the cochlea. A single-blind randomized crossover design was used. FT and FC were compared with each other and with a control condition (denoted 'Control') without frequency lowering, using hearing aids that were otherwise identical. Data were collected after at least 6 weeks of experience with a condition. Outcome m

Glottal stop (GS) is a typical compensatory articulation, which has a great impact on speech intelligibility in patients with cleft palate. It is usually detected by perceptual analysis. The aim of this study is to investigate the utility of vocal attack time (VAT) values in patients with cleft palate with and without GS, when unaspirated monosyllables are articulated in Mandarin, by using electroglottography. Unaspirated monosyllables /pa/ /pi/ /pu/ /ta/ /ti/ /tu/ /ka/ /ki/ /ku/ with tone one were analyzed. A total of 575 tokens were obtained from 42 patients with cleft palate, divided into a…

The perception of music depends on the normal function of the peripheral and central auditory system. Aged subjects without hearing loss have altered music perception, including pitch and temporal features. Presbycusis or age-related hearing loss is a frequent condition in elderly people, produced by neurodegenerative processes that affect the cochlear receptor cells and brain circuits involved in auditory perception. Clinically, presbycusis patients have bilateral high-frequency hearing loss and deteriorated speech intelligibility. Music impairments in presbycusis subjects can be attributed t…

Patients with large conductive hearing loss do not always tolerate conventional air conduction or bone conduction hearing aids. They can be … B (PTA). When this system is utilized for proper hearing loss, however, the system usually improves speech intelligibility both in quiet and in background noise. When the system is prescribed for hearing losses with a moderate or large perceptive component, the system is ineffective and leads to negative evaluations.

METHOD: Extensive electronic search and analysis of the databases of Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ERIC, PsycInfo, CINAHL, AMED, Journals@Ovid, and German Databases, including all papers published since 1970 plus a manual search of the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal (1970-3/2010).

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect of teachers' dysphonic voices on children's listening comprehension.
METHODS: One hundred thirty-four grade three and four students were recruited from local primary schools in Hong Kong. They were required to listen to six passages, three in Cantonese and three in English, which were either read in normal, mildly dysphonic, or severely dysphonic voices. The students were required to complete six multiple-choice comprehension questions upon listening to each passage. Comprehension performance across languages, dysphonic severities, genders, and q

Five studies examined how people who are answering questions on behalf of another person may use their own knowledge to answer correctly while attributing authorship of their answers to the other. Experiments 1 and 2 found that participants instructed to answer yes/no questions randomly were unable to do so. They were more often correct on easy than hard questions, and extended opportunity and incentive did not reduce this effect. Experiments 3-5 found similar correctness for participants who were asked to answer yes/no questions by sensing either the ostensible keyboard finger movements or un

An "early surgery" and a "delayed surgery" group of cleft palate cases' speech has been recorded and judged in two ways. Initially four different listener groups gave their "impressions" of the speech samples followed by the two speech therapist groups assessing specific aspects of speech. For analytical purposes the delayed surgery group was divided into "repaired" and "unrepaired" hard palate groups. The general conclusion was that delaying hard palate surgery may be responsible for the persistence of noticeable abnormal speech patterns until after hard palate repair. However, despite their

BACKGROUND: Ambient voice technology (AVT) uses conversational AI to record and organize clinical consultations in real time. It is being adopted quickly across the National Health Service (NHS). However, evidence about its effects on productivity, costs, or staff experience across different health care settings is limited. Phase 1 of this research program developed a taxonomy, logic model, and outcome framework for evaluating AVT. Phase 2 will carry out a multisite, mixed methods evaluation of AVT in 4 NHS trusts. These include mental health outpatient services, acute hospital outpatient clin

This paper presents a paradigm that will help speech and language therapists learn how to improve their therapy and achieve the scientific goals of intervention more effectively and efficiently. The paradigm arises from the presenters' extensive clinical experience and represents a convergence of relatively diverse models of teaching and learning. Speech and language therapy which incorporates the critical characteristics from this paradigm is more stimulating and challenging for both the client and speech and language therapist.

In this article the results of tongue reduction in a group of seven children with Down's syndrome are described. This surgical procedure was performed because of macroglossia, present in all seven children. Postoperatively all children eat and drink better, drooling has stopped and both articulation and phonation have improved. Therefore tongue reduction should be considered a functional operation that can improve the quality of life of the child and its family.

Some defects related to untreated palatal or residual clefts represent major deformities. A review of 177 cases, untreated or operated on according to Schwekkendiek's (1958) chronology, was carried out. The advantage of simultaneous operative techniques is discussed, specifically pharyngoplasties, vestibular flap rotation, and osteoplastic closure. When all other surgical possibilities have failed, some flaps have been used to restore mucosal continuity. A multidisciplinary evaluation of each individual case is emphasized.
