A Word-Learning Intervention Pilot Study Utilizing Principles of Retrieval- and Criterion-Based Learning for Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Vocabulary knowledge at school entry provides an essential foundation for academic and literacy learning. Thus, school entry is an important timepoint to support word learning by children with developmental language disorder (DLD). Retrieval-based training strategies support both learning and retention of words for individuals with DLD in lab-based research. Additionally, lab-based research with adults with typical development demonstrates that pairing retrieval- and criterion-based training strategies supports learning efficiency. Currently, it is unclear if retrieval- and criterion-

South of the UES: Improving the ability of speech-language pathologists to detect oesophageal abnormalities during videofluoroscopy swallowing studies.

PURPOSE: With two-thirds of adults presenting for a videofluoroscopy swallow study (VFSS) with oesophageal abnormalities, it seems prudent to include visualisation of the oesophagus, in the context of the entire swallow process, to provide further information to the diagnostic team. This study aims to evaluate the ability of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to interpret oesophageal sweep on VFSS and the relative improvement in that ability with additional training. METHOD: One hundred SLPs attended training in oesophageal visualisation during VFSS, based on a previous study. Ten oesophagea

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Paired With Verb Network Strengthening Treatment Improves Verb Naming in Primary Progressive Aphasia: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: There are few evidence-based treatments for language deficits in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). PPA treatments are often adopted from the poststroke aphasia literature. The poststroke aphasia literature has shown promising results using Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), a behavioral therapy that focuses on improving naming by producing verbs and their arguments in phrases and sentences. Emerging research in poststroke aphasia and PPA has shown promising results pairing behavioral language therapy with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). METHOD: This study

Participation, equality, and justice in Rwanda for people who experience communication disability: Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.

PURPOSE: The right to communicate, by any means, is key to participation in peaceful and just societies. Participation relies on societal equality which, in turn, depends upon consensus that everyone has the same rights, as well as responsibility to uphold the rights of all. People who experience communication disability are, however, often invisible, misunderstood, stigmatised, and under-enumerated, particularly in resource-limited settings, including humanitarian contexts. A lack of identification and understanding of needs exclude this group from equal societal participation and exposes the

Intraword Variability in Children With Auditory Brainstem Implants: A Longitudinal Comparison With Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Intraword variability designates the phenomenon that a particular target word is produced variably by a child at one point in the child's development. In this study, the amount of intraword variability is studied longitudinally in children with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). Auditory brainstem implantation is a relative recent technique in pediatric hearing restoration. Therefore, little is known about the phonological development of these children's speech. METHOD: The intraword variability is investigated in three children with ABI, in comparison to children with cochlear impl

Abnormal Esophageal Clearance Identified During Modified Barium Swallow Study in an Acute Poststroke Cohort.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia impacts many poststroke survivors with wide-ranging prevalence in the acute and chronic phases. One relatively unexplored manifestation of poststroke swallowing impairment is that of primary or co-occurring esophageal dysphagia. The incidence of esophageal dysphagia in this population is unknown despite the shared neuroanatomy and physiology with the oropharynx. We aimed to determine the presence of abnormal esophageal clearance in an acute poststroke sample using the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP) Component 17 (esophageal clearance) as our outcome measu
