Bilateral spontaneous rupture of Achilles tendons: a case report.

Spontaneous bilateral rupture of Achilles tendon is rare. Rupture of the Achilles tendon has been described in patients on oral corticosteroid therapy. The sudden dorsiflexion of the plantar-flexed foot is the usual mechanism of injury. Spontaneous bilateral rupture is common in the degenerated tendon, which is often seen in patients with long-term corticosteroid therapy. This case is unusual because the patient has never taken steroids. We discuss the mechanism of injury and other probable causes.

Ankle and foot tendon transfer (excluding paralytic foot and toe deformity).

It is essential to master the techniques of tendon transfer and to know the indications, so as to be able to treat tendinopathy, tendon tear or static deformity in the foot and ankle. The type of transfer depends on the pathology, with the aim of reconstructing or supplementing the affected muscle. Complete clinical and paraclinical assessment is needed to determine feasibility and draw up the preoperative plan according to axial deformity and associated retraction. Success depends on several factors: rigorous technique, fixation method, tension adjustment, immobilization, and rehabilitation.

[Evaluation of functional treatment of the acute Achilles tendon rupture according to the Thermann score scale (ten years experience)].

INTRODUCTION: The injury of Achilles tendon most frequently occurs as a result of overburdening of the tendon, particularly in sportsmen (runners and jumpers) even though they are not rare in the rest of the population. Biomechanical distrubances on the burdening tendon, or its continuous burdening, result in the degenerative changes in the form of pathological tenosynovial adhesions in and around the tendon that precedes the tendon rupture. In the recent years conservative functional treatment increasingly became the method of choice due to final results of the treatment. Basic principle of t

[Tendon transfer of the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle in tendon rupture of the extensor pollicis muscle].

The most common ruptures of all of the tendons of the hand are those of the extensor pollicis longus tendon (EPL). As to its etiology, the rupture of EPL can spontaneously occur tendosynovitis in rheumatic patients or rarely in result of conservative treatment of distal forearm fractures. During the last 18 months, 4 cases of EPL ruptures following the conservative treatment of distal forearm fractures have been diagnosed in our clinical material. All patients underwent the transfer of extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) tendon due to. We present our indications of the technique, and the cli

[Rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon].

On the basis of an extensive follow-up study, the transfer of the extensor indicis tendon to the thumb following rupture of the extensor pollicis longus is recommended as the procedure of choice. If attention is paid to certain technical details, good to very good results can be obtained.

Atraumatic retrieval of the proximal end of a severed digital flexor tendon.

A suction catheter technique is suggested as the next procedure of choice when proximal digital "milking" with wrist flexion fails to deliver the proximal end of the flexor tendon severed within the digital sheath.

Are the material properties and matrix composition of equine flexor and extensor tendons determined by their functions?

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Injury to the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) is common in competition horses. The SDFT contributes to locomotory efficiency by storing energy; such tendons have low safety margins. Tendons which merely position the limb, including the opposing common digital extensor tendon (CDET), are rarely injured. The current failure of strategies to prevent or effectively treat injury to the SDFT indicates the importance of understanding how it differs from tendons which are not injury-prone. HYPOTHESIS: That the structural and material properties and matrix compos

Hybrid-J shape needle in ultrasound-guided looped thread carpal tunnel release: a cadaveric study on safety and efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most prevalent peripheral nerve entrapment disorder, often requiring surgical intervention. … edian nerve (MN) injuries, 2 ulnar artery injuries, 2 superficial palmar arch (SPA) injuries, and 2 tendon injuries, whereas HJSN caused only 1 SPA injury (OR = 10.23, 95% CI: 1.12-93.34, p = 0.02). Biomechanical testing demonstrated HJSN required higher force to penetrate tendons (27.07 ± 2.43 N vs. 9.89 ± 2.53 N, p < 0.01) and nerves (25.75 ± 3.26 N vs. 10.72 ± …

Didymin may Enhance Tendon-Bone Healing Partly by Promoting PPAR-Mediated Fatty Acid Oxidation and Macrophage M2 Polarization.

OBJECTIVE: Achieving rapid and high-quality regeneration after injury at the tendon-bone interface remains an urgent challenge in the fields of orthopedics, sports medicine, and tissue regeneration. Didymin (DID) possesses a range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties; however, there is a research gap regarding the role of DID in tendon-bone healing. Therefore, this study intends to further investigate the role of DID in tendon-bone healing. METHODS: A tendon-bone healing mouse model of Achilles tendon-Achilles bone was construct

[Achilles tendon rupture--early functional and surgical options with special emphasis on rehabilitation issues].

Achilles tendon ruptures are one end of a continuum starting with the healthy Achilles tendon via the thickened and painful tendinopathic Achilles tendon with neovascularisation to the complete tendon rupture. Often times chinolone antibiotics, cortisone therapy and valgus foot axis are associated risk factors. Incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures is estimated to be 10/100 000 per year with a mean age of 35-40 years. Physical activity is encountered in 75 % cases of Achilles tendon ruptures. Running is associated with Achilles tendinopathy as the predominant overuse injury in an analysis amon

Flexor Pollicis Tendon Reconstruction With Allograft Tendon After Rupture: Technique and Case Series.

Division or rupture of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon can occur secondary to direct injury, laceration, or attritional rupture. Attritional rupture is particularly common in the setting volar plate fixation of a distal radius fracture. FPL tendon discontinuity can be restored through either primary repair or reconstruction. Primary repair can be challenging if not done within the first few days after injury secondary to contraction of the FPL muscle with retraction of the proximal tendon. Repair in this environment can lead to tension across the repair site as well as necessary flexio

Isolated partial tear and partial avulsion of the medial head of gastrocnemius tendon presenting as posterior medial knee pain.

We present a case of medial head of gastrocnemius tendon tear. The type of injury widely reported in the literature is tear of the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle or 'tennis leg'. We previously reported an isolated partial tear and longitudinal split of the tendon to the medial head of gastrocnemius at its musculotendinous junction. The case we now present has notable differences; the tear was interstitial and at the proximal (femoral attachment) part of the tendon, the patient's symptoms and clinical examination suggested a medial meniscus tear, and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated

Overuse Injuries of the Shoulder.

This article discusses the most common and important overuse injuries of the shoulder with attention to MR imaging and ultrasound findings. Pathologic conditions occurring in athletes and nonathletes are included, with review of relevant anatomy, predisposing factors, and treatment considerations. Specific overuse injuries involving the rotator cuff, long head of the biceps tendon, and subacromial-subdeltoid bursa are reviewed. Impingement syndromes of the shoulder, Little Leaguer's shoulder, and stress-induced distal clavicular osteolysis are also discussed.
