Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid: a case report.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid (PSCCT) is a rare and rapidly progressive malignancy that carries a poor prognosis. PSCCT is … The trachea and esophagus were stenotic because of external compression. Partial thyroidectomy and tracheotomy were performed under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The diagnosis of PSCCT was established via histopathology and immunohistochemistry.

Retrospective analysis of factors influencing oncologic outcome in 590 patients with early-intermediate glottic cancer treated by transoral laser microsurgery.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing oncologic outcomes for patients with early-intermediate glotti … s 95.9%. In particular, from our data, we found that occult metastases were rare (1.2%); preventive tracheotomy was not necessary; the local recurrence rate of Tis was similar to that in the T2 and T3 group; and no major or lethal complications were observed. CONCLUSION: Age (>60 vs ≤60), type of cordectomy (≥IV vs ≤III), status of margins, fixed arytenoid, …

Lack of adverse events after medialization laryngoplasty With the montgomery thyroplasty implant in patients with unilateral laryngeal nerve paralysis.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to document the incidence of and risk factors for adverse events after medialization laryngoplasty with Montgomery imp … , extrusion (1.6%), persistent morphological laryngeal alterations (1.6%), and keloid scars (1.1%). Tracheotomy, procedure-related death, and infection at the insertion site were not encountered. No significant statistical relationship was noted between the various adverse events encountered and the variables under analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate …

The immunohistochemical techniques proved positive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, CD68, CD34, bcl2, EGFR, S100, Ki67, and negative for CD117, NFT, chromogranin, c-erbB2, CK34betaE12, MNF116, and p53. 19th century pioneering of intensive therapy in North America. Part 3: the Fell-O'Dwyer apparatus and William P Northrup.

Two previous articles in this series have described the reintroduction of forced respiration for ventilatory difficulties, particularly in opiate poisoning (by George Fell), and successful use of intralaryngeal tubes designed for treating airway obstruction in diphtheritic acute laryngitis (by Joseph O'Dwyer). In 1891, O'Dwyer extended the applications of Fell's system, introducing a longer orolaryngeal tube, replacing Fell's methods of inflating the lungs, which had been with a somewhat unsatisfactory facemask or through a tracheotomy tube. The combined system became known as the "Fell-O'Dwye…

[Bilateral vocal cords paralysis in newborn].

OBJECTIVE: This study aims at analyzing medical and surgical management as well as long-term follow-up of newborn (n=8) suffering from bilat … vocal cord adduction. CONCLUSION: The low probability of spontaneous recovery and the drawbacks of tracheotomy encourage us to perform vocal cords adduction procedures as soon as possible.

[A case report of severe laryngeal edema which occured before removal of a laryngeal mask airway].

Twenty hours later the pharyngeal edema was still very severe, and tracheotomy was performed. The edema disappeared three days later. We thought the edema had occurred as a result of blood flow disturbance caused by LMA in narrow pharyngeal space expanding to the epiglottis. It should be kept in mind that severe edema could de …

Subglottic ductal cysts in the preterm infant: association with laryngeal intubation trauma.

Acquired subglottic ductal cysts following prolonged intubation in preterm infants have been reported with increasing frequency during the p … icant airway obstruction, but associated intubation changes were sufficiently severe to necessitate tracheotomy in 10 patients. The cysts observed in our study did not enlarge and in 4 patients were observed to spontaneously resolve or shrink in size--trends not previously reported. Subglottic ductal cysts noted in preterm infants after prolonged intubation m …

Failed extubation in the neonatal intensive care unit.

One of the roles of the pediatric otolaryngologist in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is the assessment and management of the neonat … ervention required during the study period (minimum 6 months' follow-up). Eleven neonates underwent tracheotomy (19% of the series). Four neonates underwent another external procedure to allow extubation (7% of the series). Three neonates died while still intubated (5% of the series). Our management of the neonate who fails a trial of extubation is discussed.

Severe tracheomalacia associated with esophageal atresia: results of surgical treatment.

This study reviews our experience from 1977 to 1991 with 32 children born with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) who later underwent surgery for severe tracheomalacia. Indications for surgery included dying spells (21), inability to extubate the airway (nasotracheal tube 5, tracheotomy 3), and recurrent pneumonia (3). Diagnosis was confirmed by chest x-ray, esophagogram, and bronchoscopy. Aortopexy was performed in 31 of 32 children; a splint without aortopexy was used in one older girl. Splinting was also necessary in two of the 31 at the initial operation, when aortop…
