BACKGROUND: High-resolution MR imaging enables the visualization of individual nerves in the internal auditory canal (IAC). Cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) is recognized as one of the major causes of sensory neural hearing loss (SNHL), especially in cases of unilateral hearing loss in childhood. Some patients with CND are thought to have accompanying vestibular nerve deficiency (VND). However, there have been few reports focusing on VND and vestibular function in these children.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of VND and vestibular dysfunction in children with unilat

Cochlear and vestibular functions of 30 patients suffering from Méniere's disease have been analyzed through audiometric and electronystagmographic studies. Auditive thresholds in low, medium and high frequencies have been correlated with the results of the caloric and pendular tests. Statistical analysis has demonstrated that there is no significant relationship between caloric and pendular reflectivity and hearing loss in the mentioned frequencies. In conclusion, in Méniere's disease hearing losses and vestibular alterations follow a different pathologic pattern.

The clinician's major role in management of the dizzy patient involves determining what dizziness is vertigo, and what vertigo is of central or peripheral origin. These demand attention to details of history, otolaryngological workup including vestibular assessment, and often use of diagnostic and management algorithms. There is paucity of published reports of the management outcomes of peripheral vestibular diseases from Africa. Two tertiary care otologist-led dedicated vertigo clinics are located in Abuja, Nigeria. A prospective, non-randomized study of patients presenting with features of p

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: First, to update the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of the most frequent peripheral vestibular disorders. Second, to identify those disorders for which the diagnostic criteria are still deficient and treatment trials are still lacking.
RECENT FINDINGS: Bilateral vestibulopathy can be reliably diagnosed by the head-impulse test, caloric irrigation, and vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials. A new frequent subtype has been described: cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome. Benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo can be easily diagnosed and e

Bilateral vestibular schwannomas are commonly diagnosed in patients affected by neurofibromatosis type 2, a genetic disease caused by a heterozygous mutation in the gene region encoding neurofibromin-2. Sporadic bilateral vestibular schwannomas are very rare entities affecting almost exclusively elderly people. We present the case of a senior woman who was followed up with the "wait-and-scan" strategy for a unilateral vestibular schwannoma that later developed as a contralateral tumor, compatible with vestibular schwannoma, raising questions about its nature and risk of having been transmitted

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Masseter vestibular evoked myogenic potential (mVEMP) is a newly developed tool which is used to assess the vestibulo-trigeminal neural and saccular functioning pathways. Recently, this test was added to a full test battery for evaluating the brainstem of people with neurological disorders and other vestibular diseases. For any test to qualify as a standard test, the test must have high reliability across all testing windows. Hence, the present study focused on validating the reliability of mVEMP in a large population.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 50 hea

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine if there are factors that can predict whether a child with hearing loss will also have vestibular loss.
METHOD: A retrospective chart review was completed on 186 children with hearing loss seen at Boys Town National Research Hospital for vestibular testing from 1999 to 2015 through neurosensory genetics clinic or cochlear implant candidacy. Each child's medical chart was reviewed to obtain the following data: vestibular loss severity (classified as normal, bilateral, or mild to moderate), degree of hearing loss (bilateral pure-tone average [PTA]

Vestibular loss induces a combination of postural, oculomotor, and perceptive symptoms that are compensated over time. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of betahistine dihydrochloride on vestibular compensation. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed in Menière's disease patients who underwent a curative unilateral vestibular neurotomy (UVN). The effects of betahistine treatment were investigated on a broad spectrum of vestibular-induced changes resulting from vestibular loss: body sway, head orientation, ocular cyclotorsion, spontaneous nystagmus,

Eight patients diagnosed with vestibular neuritis received the newly developed three-dimensional videonystagmography (3D VNG) and vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) examination in order to localize the lesion site. Two (25%) of the 8 patients exhibited spontaneous nystagmus with 3 components, indicating that both the horizontal semicircular canal (HSCC) and anterior semicircular canal (ASCC) were affected. The remaining 6 patients (75%) displayed only horizontal nystagmus, meaning that only the HSCC was involved. Seven (88%) of the 8 patients had bilateral normal VEMPs, revealing spar

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a newly defined diagnostic syndrome that unifies key features of chronic subjective dizziness, phobic postural vertigo and related disorders. It describes a common chronic dysfunction of the vestibular system and brain that produces persistent dizziness, non-spinning vertigo and/or unsteadiness. The disorder constitutes a long-term maladaptation to a neuro-otological, medical or psychological event that triggered vestibular symptoms, and is usefully considered within the spectrum of other functional neurological disorders. While diagnostic tes

Each vestibular sensory epithelium in the inner ear is divided morphologically and physiologically into two zones, called the striola and extrastriola in otolith organ maculae, and the central and peripheral zones in semicircular canal cristae. We found that formation of striolar/central zones during embryogenesis requires Cytochrome P450 26b1 (Cyp26b1)-mediated degradation of retinoic acid (RA). In Cyp26b1 conditional knockout mice, formation of striolar/central zones is compromised, such that they resemble extrastriolar/peripheral zones in multiple features. Mutants have deficient vestibular
