Effects of vibration exposure on professional drivers: a field test for quantifying visual and cognitive performance.

Effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure on professional drivers were predicted using a 45 subjects sample of healthy volunteers from both genders. These volunteers preformed a visual/motor accuracy evaluation test, the 'omega test', inside a vehicle (van) under three different WBV exposure conditions, van halted, van performing a circuit on asphalt, and on cobblestone. WBV levels of the stated conditions were statistically different and impairment upon subjects' performance was found. The statistical significant difference encountered between the subjects performance under the two whole…

Effects of whole body vibration on outer hair cells' hearing response to distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

Whole body vibration (WBV) is one of the most vexing problems in industries. There is a debate about the effect of WBV exposure on hearing system as vibration-induced hearing loss. The purpose of this study was to investigate outer hair cells' (OHCs') hearing response hearing response to distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in rabbits exposed to WBV. It was hypothesized that the DPOAE response amplitudes (A(dp)) in rabbits exposed to WBV would be lower than those in control rabbits not exposed to WBV. New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits as vibration group (n = 6, exposed to WBV in the…

Vibration in a self-oscillating vocal fold model with left-right asymmetry in body-layer stiffness.

This study compares the phonatory behavior of an asymmetric vocal fold model to that of each individual vocal fold model in a hemi-configuration. Although phonation frequencies of the two folds in hemi-configurations had a ratio close to 1:3, a subharmonic synchronization between the two folds was not observed in the asymmetric model. Instead, the vibratory behavior was dominated by the dynamics of one fold only, and the other fold was enslaved to vibrate at the same frequency. Increasing subglottal pressure induced a shift in relative dominance between the two folds, leading to abrupt changes

Effects of repetition rate of bone-conducted vibration on ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: This study applied bone-conducted vibration (BCV) stimuli at various repetition rates to investigate the effects of repetition rate on both ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs and cVEMPs). METHODS: Twenty-five healthy subjects underwent oVEMP tests in BCV mode at repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz. The optimal repetition rates (5, 10 and 20Hz) for oVEMPs were also adopted to elicit cVEMPs, and 20Hz stimuli were further evaluated in pathological ears. RESULTS: At repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz, the prevalence of clear oVEMPs w…

Effects of vibration treatment on tibial bone of ovariectomized rats analyzed by in vivo micro-CT.

Daily low-amplitude, high-frequency whole-body vibration (WBV) treatment can increase bone formation rates and bone volume in rodents. Its effects vary, however, with vibration characteristics and study design, and effects on 3D bone microstructure of ovariectomized animals over time have not been documented. Our goal was to determine the effects of WBV on tibial bone of ovariectomized, mature rats over time using an in vivo micro-CT scanner. Adult rats were divided into: ovariectomy (OVX) (n = 8), SHAM-OVX (n = 8), OVX and WBV treatment (n = 7). Eight weeks after OVX, rats in the vibration gr…

[Morphological characteristic of labyrinthine zone of rat allantoic placenta after exposure to vibration of industrial frequency].

The labyrinthine zone of allantoic placenta was studied after dosated exposure to vibration. The study was carried out in pregnant female Wistar rats (n=68). Rats were subjected to short-term vibration from Day 9 to Day 13 and long-term vibration from the Day 9 to Day 18 of pregnancy (taking into account embryogenesis periodization and the development period of extraembryonic organs). Vibration table with fixed parameters (frequency of 32 Hz and acceleration of 50 m/s2) was used. Placental and fetal mass were measured, labyrinthine zone components were evaluated using the morphometric methods,…

Design of digital filters for frequency weightings required for risk assessments of workers exposed to vibration.

Many workers are exposed to vibration in their industrial environment. Vibration can be transmitted through a vehicle seat or a hand-held power tool. Excessive vibration exposure may cause health problems and therefore it is important that the worker's vibration exposure is assessed, which may require measurement by the equipment manufacturer or the employer. Human exposure to vibration may be measured using accelerometers; however, weighting filters are required to correlate the physical vibration measurements to the human's response to vibration. ISO 2631, BS 6841 and ISO 5349-1 describe sui…

Abnormal vibration induced illusion of movement in essential tremor: evidence for abnormal muscle spindle afferent function.

OBJECTIVES: Vibration induced illusion of movement (VIIM) is abnormal in patients with idiopathic focal dystonia, an abnormality which corrects with fatigue of the vibrated muscle. Since dystonia and essential tremor sometimes coexist in families, we investigated the perception of VIIM and the effect of fatigue on VIIM in patients with essential tremor. METHODS: VIIM in 18 patients with essential tremor was compared with VIIM in 18 healthy control participants before and after volitional fatigue of the vibrated muscles. RESULTS: Vibration of the immobilised biceps produced a subnormal VIIM i…

Separate detection of vocal fold vibration by optoreflectometry: a study of biphonation on excised porcine larynges.

This study describes a novel system allowing the noncontact measurement of vibration of each vocal fold. The system is based on reflectometry, i.e. measurement of light bouncing off a vibrating object. The system works in natural light and is sensitive, compact, and inexpensive. We have used this system for separate and simultaneous detection of the vibration of each vocal fold in excised porcine larynges. Normal conditions of vibration and asymmetry of tension leading to biphonations were studied. Analysis of each vibrating cycle reveals interaction between the vocal folds allowing synchronou…

Noninvasive determination of bone mechanical properties using vibration response: a refined model and validation in vivo.

Accurate non-invasive mechanical measurement of long bones is made difficult by the masking effect of surrounding soft tissues. Mechanical response tissue analysis (MRTA) offers a method for separating the effects of the soft tissue and bone; however, a direct validation has been lacking. A theoretical analysis of wave propagation through the compressed tissue revealed a strong mass effect dependent on the relative accelerations of the probe and bone. The previous mathematical model of the bone and overlying tissue system was reconfigured to incorporate the theoretical finding. This newer mode

Impaired vibration perception threshold and long-term mean HbA1c in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

The impact of long-term glycaemic control, assessed as HbA1c for 5 years or more, on vibration perception threshold (VPT) in Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes was investigated. Patients with diabetes onset before 31 years of age and with a diabetes duration of < 26 years were included. HbA1c was on average monitored over 9.2 years with 32 measurements. VPT was measured with biothesiometry on the big toes, and compared to non-diabetic reference values standardized for age and height. The biothesiometry readings in the group of 207 patients were elevated. The median z score (z-transformation o…

Application of Stockholm criteria to patients with hand-arm vibration syndrome in a follow-up study.

We applied Stockholm criterion to patients with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) for assessing the therapeutic effects in comparison with the criterion of the Ministry of Labour in Japan (MLJ). Forty male patients recognized as an occupational disease were examined in two times (mean interval periods 3.0 years). The subjects were free from vibratory tasks during the mean period of 8.3 years. The clinical examinations and some laboratory tests were conducted with the same procedures by the two same occupational physicians. The criterion of MLJ was graded more severe than Stockholm one for the…

Correspondence between neurological symptoms and outcome of quantitative sensory testing in the hand-arm vibration syndrome.

To evaluate neurological symptoms in the vibration syndrome, 55 patients with vascular and neurological symptoms in the hand who had been exposed to vibration were examined. Their exposure to vibration was estimated and neurological vascular symptoms were evaluated according to symptom scales. Temperature thresholds were measured on the right thenar eminence and on the distal volar aspect of the second and third fingers held together on both sides. Vibration thresholds were measured dorsally on the second and fifth metacarpal bones and on the second and fifth fingers proximal to the nail roots…
