The pressure-flow relationship was examined in excised canine and human larynges with and without a vocal tract. Canine and human larynges were prepared and cut in the midsagittal plane from the top to about 10 mm below the vocal folds. The right half was removed and replaced with an acrylic plate. The vocal tract was simulated initially with a 15-cm plastic tube and later with a vocal tract model with an area function resembling "ah." Simultaneous recordings were made of the glottal pressure, mean subglottal pressure, and average airflow at various levels of adduction. Preliminary data indica

In this study, the injection of phenol into the true vocal fold was evaluated on a rat model as a possible treatment for adductor spasmodic dysphonia. A 10% phenol solution was injected into the right true vocal fold. Quantitative measurement of vocal fold adductory force showed reduction to 35% of the preinjection value 3 months after injection (p < .05). Qualitative evaluation by videolaryngoscopy demonstrated maintenance of the normal vocal fold range of motion. Histologic studies showed a transient inflammatory infiltrate and myolysis, while the vocal fold mucosa and the cricoarytenoid joi

The adductor branch was anastomosed with the main branch of ansa cervicalis to reinnervate the vocal cord adductors in six dogs at the time of denervation and after varying intervals of chronic denervation. Some recovery of adduction was noted within ten-month interval. Laryngeal electromyography, tension tests and histologic studies of the adductor muscles were correlated with the recovery of adduction. Although adduction didn't recover after twelve-month interval, striations of the adductor muscles were normal, only slight fibrosis was observed.

The purpose of this project was to attempt restoration of abduction of a recently experimentally denervated left dorsal cricoarytenoid muscle by implanting a transected nerve-end into the paralyzed muscle. In six ponies the cut end of the second cervical nerve was implanted into a slit made in the left dorsal cricoarytenoid muscle. The nerve end was secured in place with one 5-0 polypropylene suture connecting the epineurium to the epimysium. The left recurrent laryngeal nerve was transected during this procedure. All six ponies showed signs of complete left laryngeal hemiplegia immediately af

Effects of ventriculectomy and prosthetic laryngoplasty on upper airway flow mechanics and blood gas tensions in exercising horses with induced left laryngeal hemiplegia were assessed. Five adult horses were trained to stand, trot (4.5 m/s), and gallop (7.2 m/s) on a treadmill (6.38 degrees incline). Inspiratory and expiratory airflows (VImax, VEmax, respectively) were measured using a 15.2-cm diameter pneumotachograph in a face mask. Inspiratory and expiratory transupper airway pressures (PuI, PuE, respectively) were determined as pressure differences between barometric pressure and lateral t

Tidal breathing through a tracheostomy and through the larynx were compared in two groups of rabbits. Ten control and fourteen rabbits with chronically vagally denervated lungs were anaesthetized and spontaneously breathing. Inspiratory and expiratory tracheal pressure and timing components of respiratory pattern were measured in both groups of animals before and after carotid sinus/body denervation and cervical vagotomy. Breathing through the larynx significantly increased the inspiratory pressure and, to a lesser degree, affected expiratory pressure in both groups of animals and changed the

This study was designed to examine the feasibility of transcutaneous stimulation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Electrical activation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve was achieved by applying a blunt electrode to the intact neck skin at specific points along the tracheoesophageal groove in anesthetized adult dogs. The stimulus consisted of 10 mA cathodal pulses, each of 1 msec duration, delivered at a frequency of 10 Hz and increased by 10 Hz increments up to 100 Hz. Vocal cord excursion was directly related to the frequency of applied current. In all six dogs studies, stimulation at 30 Hz

INTRODUCTION: Animal-assisted therapies are increasingly applied in rehabilitation and complementary care, particularly in supporting mental and neurocognitive conditions. The targeted therapeutic use of songbirds and their vocalizations (ornithotherapy) represents a relatively novel approach that remains underrepresented in the international literature, especially regarding objectively measurable physiological outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of an ornithotherapy intervention on blood pressure and pulse rate in a residential institution caring for individ

The uptake of virtual fencing (VF) technologies to manage grazing dairy cattle is increasing, but little empirical evidence exists to support acceptable thresholds for the electric shock delivered by these systems. This study quantified the behavioral responses of dairy cows to 4 shock energy levels delivered by the Halter VF system. Forty early-lactation multiparous dairy cows, naïve to VF, were studied in 5 groups of 8 animals. Within each group, cows were randomly allocated to receive one of 4 shock energies (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.45 J) via a collar-mounted VF unit. Behavioral responses to sh

Pharmacological inhibition of phosphodiesterase 2A (PDE2A), which catalyzes the hydrolysis of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), has recently been proposed as a novel therapeutic tool for Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), the leading monogenic cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Here, we investigated the role of PDE2A in ASD pathogenesis using two rat models that reflect one of either the genetic or environmental factors involved in the human disease: the genetic Fmr1-Δexon 8 rat model and the environmental rat model based on prenatal exposure to valp

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common childhood disorder characterized by unwanted movements or vocal sounds called tics. It is often accompanied by other psychobehavioral disorders, including fearful behavior. The establishment and evaluation of rat models of TS and comorbid fear can provide an experimental basis for the treatment of TS and its comorbid fear disorder.
METHODS: Sixteen rats were randomly divided into a model group (n=8) and control group (n=8). In the model group, rats were injected intraperitoneally with iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) for 1 week to establish the TS mod

PURPOSE: We previously reported the efficacy of intraarticular (IA) rimabotulinumtoxinB (BoNT/B) in a murine model of chronic degenerative arthritis pain. This study aimed to measure the analgesic effects of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT/A) on collagenase induced chronic degenerative arthritis joint pain.
METHODS: Chronic degenerative arthritis was produced by IA injection of 10 μl collagenase (Col) (10 IU) into the left knee of C57BL/6J female mice 4 weeks prior to pain assessment. IA BoNT/A was injected 3 days before testing. Arthritis pain was measured as evoked pain scores (EPS) and spontaneou

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent animal studies demonstrate that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with movement induces movement-specific plasticity in motor cortex and improves forelimb function after stroke. We conducted a randomized controlled clinical pilot study of VNS paired with rehabilitation on upper-limb function after ischemic stroke.
METHODS: Twenty-one participants with ischemic stroke >6 months before and moderate to severe upper-limb impairment were randomized to VNS plus rehabilitation or rehabilitation alone. Rehabilitation consisted of three 2-hour sessions per week for 6

The opioid hypothesis suggests that childhood autism may result from excessive brain opioid activity during neonatal period which may constitutionally inhibit social motivation, yielding autistic isolation and aloofness (Panksepp, 1979). This hypothesis has now received strong support and is currently based on three types of arguments: (1) similarity between autistic symptomatology and abnormal behaviors induced in young animals by injections of exogenous opioids, such as increasing social aloofness and decreasing social vocalization; (2) direct biochemical evidence of abnormalities of periphe

Little information is available on how much water ad libitum milk-fed calves consume during the milk-feeding stage and during weaning to solid feed. Further, no information exists on the effects on calf behavior and performance of different water delivery systems during these stages. Therefore, the objectives of this study were first, to examine the water intake of calves fed acidified milk replacer ad libitum during the milk-feeding and weaning stages, and second, to determine whether the method of water delivery affected water and feed intake and growth during these periods or oral behavior

Monkeys, chimpanzees and humans share dorsomedial and ventrolateral frontal regions for vocalization, yet only humans have speech. These regions are interconnected by the frontal aslant tract (FAT), a pathway increasingly recognized as central to speech production. Using spherical deconvolution tractography, we compared the FAT across primate species. In humans, the FAT is left-lateralized and enlarged, predominantly in its anterior parts connecting prefrontal areas. This expansion parallels the enlargement of the arcuate fasciculus, which conveys auditory input to the ventrolateral frontal re

Echolocating animals, such as bats and toothed whales, detect prey and other objects by emitting sound pulses and analyzing returning echoes. By adjusting direction, repetition rate, frequency content, and source level of their emissions, they actively control the information they obtain from returning echoes. We investigated how two trained bottlenose dolphins adjusted sound production as well as head, and body movements while approaching and discriminating between two spheres of different materials. We compared their performance with published data from harbor porpoises using the same paradi
