Impact of adolescent stress on the expression of stress-related receptors in the hippocampus of animals exposed to alcohol prenatally.

Many functions of the hippocampus are affected by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). In particular, dysregulation of the stress response is especially important because individuals with PAE carry increased risks for exposure to stressful environments throughout life. Little is known, though, about how adolescent stress in the context of PAE-related stress system dysregulation may further alter hippocampal development. Here, we investigate the short- and long-term effects of adolescent chronic mild stress (CMS) on mRNA expression of stress-related mineralocorticoid (MR), glucocorticoid (GR), and

Effect of Adolescent Cigarette Smoking on Adulthood Substance Use and Abuse: The Mediating Role of Educational Attainment.

BACKGROUND: Even though the association between cigarette smoking and later substance use has been shown, there is still no compelling evidence that demonstrates the long-term effects in a high drug using community in African Americans. Few studies have examined the mediating mechanisms of the effect of adolescent cigarette smoking on the drug progression pathway. OBJECTIVES: We examined the long-term influence of adolescent smoking on later illegal drug use in a cohort of urban African Americans, and the mediating role of educational attainment in the drug progression pathway. METHODS: The

Direct and indirect effects of neighborhood characteristics on the perpetration of dating violence across adolescence.

Neighborhood context plays a role in the development of adolescent health risk behaviors, but few studies have investigated the influence of neighborhoods on the perpetration of dating violence. This longitudinal study examined the direct effects of risky neighborhood structural and physical characteristics on trajectories of the perpetration of dating violence, tested whether collective efficacy mediated these relationships, and determined if the effects varied by the sex of the adolescent. Adolescent data are from a multi-wave longitudinal study from grades 8 to 12; neighborhood data were co

STUDY DESIGN: Matched pairs of adolescent girls were used to compare serum melatonin levels in adolescent patients and control subjects with idiopathic scoliosis during the day and in the middle of the night. OBJECTIVES: To compare serum melatonin levels in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and matched control subjects during the day and in the middle of the night. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Recent studies using the chick as the animal model have suggested that the pineal gland and its main product, melatonin, might be involved in the cause of scoliosis. There have been no studi

Preventing adolescent pregnancy: meeting the comprehensive range of needs.

Too often, the problem of the pregnant adolescent is approached as if it existed in isolation, disconnected from the remainder of the adoles … adolescent and the adolescent male must be addressed. These needs vary with the different stages of adolescent development. During this time in which children learn how to become adults by observing their world and taking cues from the environment, the varying needs are: Early Adolescence--to develop the ability to perceive the long range consequences of their current a …

Linking brain maturation and puberty during early adolescence using longitudinal brain age prediction in the ABCD cohort.

The temporal characteristics of adolescent neurodevelopment are shaped by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. Using a large longitudinal dataset of children aged 9-13 from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study we tested the associations between pubertal status and brain maturation. Brain maturation was assessed using brain age prediction based on convolutional neural networks and minimally processed T1-weighted structural MRI data. Brain age prediction provided highly accurate and reliable estimates of individual age, with an overall mean ab

I know I can: a longitudinal examination of precursors and outcomes of perceived athletic competence among adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: This study examined predictors of perceived athletic competence and subsequent physical activity in a longitudinal sample of adolescent girls. METHODS: A sample of 149 girls was assessed at ages 9, 11, and 13. Perceived athletic competence (PAC) was measured at all ages. Nonaesthetic versus aesthetic sport participation, body fat percentage, and breast development were measured at age 9. Accelerometers were used to measure girls' moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at age 13. RESULTS: Girls who participated in nonaesthetic sports at age 9 reported higher PAC at age 11 t

Epigenetic (re)programming of gene expression changes of CB1R and FAAH in the medial prefrontal cortex in response to early life and adolescence stress exposure.

Environmental factors, including stress, that are experienced during early life (ELS) or adolescence are potential risk factors for the development of behavioral and mental disorders later in life. The endocannabinoid system plays a major role in the regulation of stress responses and emotional behavior, thereby acting as a mediator of stress vulnerability and resilience. Among the critical factors, which determine the magnitude and direction of long-term consequences of stress exposure is age, i.e., the maturity of brain circuits during stress exposure. Thus, the present study addressed the h

Does scoliosis have a psychological impact and does gender make a difference?

STUDY DESIGN: A population-based case-control study, we identified adolescents with and without scoliosis in Minnesota who were 12 through 18 years of age. Matched control subjects were randomly selected from school children who did not have scoliosis or any other condition. Information on scoliosis was obtained by a self-administered questionnaire, the Adolescent Health Survey. Collected on more than 75,000 school age adolescents, with established validity and reliability, a secondary analysis of adolescents with scoliosis was performed as compared with a normative peer group. OBJECTIVE: To

Intrahousehold food allocation social norms and food taboos in rural Ethiopia: The case of adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: In low-income countries, social norms play a significant role in intrahousehold food allocation practices. These norms can sometimes lead to discrimination against specific groups, posing a public health concern. This study focuses on the social norm surrounding food allocation within households and food taboos affecting adolescent girls in rural Ethiopia. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted using vignettes as prompts for 20 focus group discussions and 32 in-depth interviews. The vignettes were tailored to the local context. Participants were chosen purposefully, and data we

Sex-specific enhancement of palatability-driven feeding in adolescent rats.

It has been hypothesized that brain development during adolescence perturbs reward processing in a way that may ultimately contribute to the risky decision making associated with this stage of life, particularly in young males. To investigate potential reward dysfunction during adolescence, Experiment 1 examined palatable fluid intake in rats as a function of age and sex. During a series of twice-weekly test sessions, non-food-deprived rats were given the opportunity to voluntarily consume a highly palatable sweetened condensed milk (SCM) solution. We found that adolescent male, but not female

A self-disclosure model for adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV in Eswatini.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) are faced with the hard decision of how to disclose their HIV status to others. Despite this obvious challenge, few HIV self-disclosure models exist. OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at developing a self-disclosure model that would assist adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV in Eswatini to share their HIV status with others. METHOD: The explanatory sequential mixed method design was used; therefore, quantitative data were collected first from 361 ALHIV aged 15-19 years using questionnaires and analysed. Qualitative data were collected from

Coping Responses in the Context of Family Stress Moderate the Association Between Childhood Anxiety and Adolescent Depressive Symptoms.

Anxiety and depressive symptoms are common and highly interrelated. A relatively consistent temporal pattern of anxious and depressive symptoms has emerged from previous studies, such that the development of anxiety tends to precede and predict the development of depression rather than the other way around. Whether high levels of childhood anxiety predict depressive symptoms in late adolescence may depend, in part, on the ways in which children cope with stressful events. Accordingly, the present study used latent intercept models to examine involuntary and voluntary coping responses to famili

Brief Social Isolation in the Adolescent Wistar-Kyoto Rat Model of Endogenous Depression Alters Corticosterone and Regional Monoamine Concentrations.

The Wistar-Kyoto rat (WKY) model has been suggested as a model of adult and adolescent depression though face, predictive and construct validities of the model to depression remain equivocal. The suitability of the WKY as a diathesis model that tests the double-hit hypothesis, particularly during critical periods of brain and behavioural development remains to be established. Here, effects of post-weaning social isolation were assessed during early adolescence (~30pnd) on behavioural despair and learned helplessness in the forced swim test (FST), plasma corticosterone levels and tissue monoami

The association between pubertal status and sleep duration and quality among a nationally representative sample of U. S. adolescents.

Many hormones play important roles in both pubertal development and sleep regulation. Because of the possible consequences of impaired sleep, including impaired health and cognition, it is important to examine whether an association between pubertal stage and sleep exists. The aim of this analysis is to examine the association between sleep and adolescent growth and developmental stage in a large sample of adolescents ages 12-16 years from a nationally representative longitudinal study. This analysis used the public-use data set of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, an exten

Neural mechanisms of rumination subtypes in adolescent major depressive disorder based on large-scale brain network analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is rising. Rumination, a core cognitive factor in its onset and maintenance, divides into adaptive reflective and maladaptive brooding subtypes. Brooding exacerbates symptoms and predicts future episodes, suggesting distinct neural bases. Given adolescents' critical brain development, exploring brain network-rumination subtype links deepens MDD neural understanding and informs subtype-specific interventions. This study uses resting-state EEG to investigate large-scale network characteristics in adolescent MDD and their s
