Interactions between the sympathetic nervous system and the kidney: experimental observations.

Increasing evidence suggests that the renal nerves may contribute to the pathogenesis of several types of experimental hypertension. It has been demonstrated that renal denervation can either attenuate the severity or delay the development of hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), in DOCA-salt treated rats and in renovascular hypertensive rats. On the other hand, intrarenal administration of catecholamines has been shown to elicit an increase in systemic arterial pressure as long as the infusion is continued. The underlying mechanisms by which renal nerves might participate in

[Reactions of hypothalamic neurons to stimulation of the pelvic and sciatic nerves].

Unit activity of posterior, tuberal and anterior parts of the hypothalamus was studied during stimulation of the pelvic nerve in anesthetized and immobilized cats. Comparative analysis showed that neurons of the posterior hypothalamus were more responsive (89.6%) and had a shorter mean latency (33.3 +/- 2.4 msec) than neurons of more rostral parts of the hypothalamus. The focus of maximal pelvic-induced unit activity seems to be located in the posterior hypothalamus. The unit responses of the posterior hypothalamus evoked by pelvic nerve stimulation had long recovery cycles and were suppressed

Deafferentation pain after posterior rhizotomy, trauma to a limb, and herpes zoster.

After incisional or alcoholic destruction of trigeminal posterior rootlets, constant dysesthesias of major degree referred to some part of the markedly denervated zone develop in 5 to 15% of the patients. The full severity may not appear for weeks or months. There is no allodynia or hyperpathia of the denervated zone. Bulbar trigeminal tractotomy with sparing of touch sensation produces severe dysesthesias in a tiny percentage of the patients, as does selective destruction of pain fibers by radiofrequency heating or glycerol. Spinal posterior rhizotomy elicits in less than 4% a lasting dysesth

Relative afferent pupillary defect in optic tract hemianopias.

We saw four patients with optic tract lesions and complete homonymous hemianopia. In each patient, the visual acuity was good in both eyes. All four patients had a relative afferent pupillary defect in the eye with the temporal field loss. This pupillary sign is to be expected in all such cases and may serve to differentiate acute optic tract lesions from acute geniculostriate lesions when the characteristic midnasal pallor of the nerve head has not had time to develop.

Electrophysiological Properties and Mechanical Sensitivity of Trigeminal Ganglionic Neurons That Innervate the Maxillary Sinus in Mice.

The maxillary sinus is frequently implicated in facial pain syndromes arising from infection, neoplasia, dental procedures, and, importantly, migraine, which can mimic "sinus headache" and contribute to misdiagnosis and inappropriate antibiotic use. Despite the clinical burden of chronic maxillary sinus pain, the sensory neuron subtypes that convey nociceptive and mechanosensory signals from the sinus mucosa remain incompletely defined. In this study, trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons innervating the maxillary sinus (maxillary sinus TG neurons) were retrogradely labeled with the fluorescent dye

Gut microbiota dependent trimethylamine N-oxide aggravates angiotensin II-induced hypertension.

Gut microbiota produce Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) by metabolizing dietary phosphatidylcholine, choline, l-carnitine and betaine. TMAO is implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, obesity and atherosclerosis. We test, whether TMAO augments angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced vasoconstriction and hence promotes Ang II-induced hypertension. Plasma TMAO levels were indeed elevated in hypertensive patients, thus the potential pathways by which TMAO mediates these effects were explored. Ang II (400 ng/kg-1min-1) was chronically infused for 14 days via osmotic minipumps

Reduced afferent-induced facilitation of primary motor cortex excitability in restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by the association of an urge to move, and vesperal or nocturnal sensory symptoms; it is frequently associated with periodic limb movements. Evidence from imaging and electrophysiological studies suggests that RLS is linked to changes in sensorimotor integration. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms have not been characterized, and the cortical origin has yet to be confirmed. The objective of the present study was to establish whether or not sensorimotor integration in RLS patients is impaired in the evening. The time-dependent modulation of mot

Impact of Bioelectronic Medicine on the Neural Regulation of Pelvic Visceral Function.

Neuromodulation elicited by electrical stimulation of peripheral or spinal nerves is a U.S. Food and Drug Administered (FDA)-approved therapy for treating disorders of the pelvic viscera, including urinary urgency, urgency-frequency, nonobstructive urinary retention and fecal incontinence. The technique is also being tested experimentally for its efficacy in treating interstitial cystitis, chronic constipation and pelvic pain. The goal of neuromodulation is to suppress abnormal visceral sensations and involuntary reflexes and restore voluntary control. Although detailed mechanisms underlying t

The cutaneous silent period is preserved in cervical radiculopathy: significance for the diagnosis of cervical myelopathy.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity from voluntarily contracting hand muscles undergoes transient suppression following nociceptive fingertip stimulation. This suppression is mediated by a spinal inhibitory reflex designated the cutaneous silent period (CSP). The CSP is abolished or altered in a variety of myelopathic conditions. However, before the CSP can gain acceptance as an aid in the diagnosis of myelopathy, the contribution of non-myelopathic conditions that can interrupt the afferent pathways responsible for the CSP needs to be considered. Accordingly, we examined the effect of radiculopa…

Segregated populations of hippocampal principal CA1 neurons mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear.

Learning processes mediating conditioning and extinction of contextual fear require activation of several key signaling pathways in the hippocampus. Principal hippocampal CA1 neurons respond to fear conditioning by a coordinated activation of multiple protein kinases and immediate early genes, such as cFos, enabling rapid and lasting consolidation of contextual fear memory. The extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) additionally acts as a central mediator of fear extinction. It is not known however, whether these molecular events take place in overlapping or nonoverlapping neuronal popula

Feeding behavior in mammals including humans.

The complex control of food intake and energy metabolism in mammals relies on the ability of the brain to integrate multiple signals indicating the nutritional state and the energy level of the organism and to produce appropriate responses in terms of food intake, energy expenditure, and metabolic activity. Central regulation of feeding is organized as a long-loop mechanism involving humoral signals and afferent neuronal pathways to the brain, processing in hypothalamic neuronal circuits, and descending commands using vagal and spinal neurons. Sensor mechanisms or receptors sensitive to glucos

Transient receptor potential channels in sensory mechanisms of the lower urinary tract.

Disruptions to sensory pathways in the lower urinary tract commonly occur and can give rise to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The unmet clinical need for treatment of LUTS has stimulated research into the molecular mechanisms that underlie neuronal control of the bladder and transient receptor potential (TRP) channels have emerged as key regulators of the sensory processes that regulate bladder function. TRP channels function as molecular sensors in urothelial cells and afferent nerve fibres and can be considered the origin of bladder sensations. TRP channels in the lower urinary tract c

From neuroimunomodulation to bioelectronic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Neuronal stimulation is an emerging field in modern medicine to control organ function and reestablish physiological homeostasis during illness. The nervous system innervates most of the peripheral organs and provides a fine tune to control the immune system. Most of these studies have focused on vagus nerve stimulation and the physiological, cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating the immune system. Here, we review the new results revealing afferent vagal signaling pathways, immunomodulatory brain structures, spinal cord-dependent circuits, neural and non-neural cholinergic/catecholamine

A practical review and update on the management of pruritus sine materia.

Pruritus can be divided into several categories: pruritoceptive, neurogenic, neuropathic, and psychogenic. Neuropathic itch is caused by lesions of afferent neural pathways. Psychogenic itch is secondary to primary psychiatric disorders. Both of these types of pruritus present with no evidence of primary cutaneous lesions. The presentation of both conditions can be confusing and patients with no primary cutaneous lesions can be prematurely diagnosed as having a psychiatric disorder. Treatment of neuropathic and psychogenic pruritus can be divided into pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapi

A binocular pupil model for simulation of relative afferent pupil defects and the swinging flashlight test.

Many important intracranial neural pathways are involved in the control of the two muscles of the human pupil and the observation and analysis of pupil responses to light or other stimuli is of great interest in many clinical procedures. The binocular pupil model presented in this document has a topology encompassing much of the complexity of the pupil system neurophysiology. The dynamic parameters of the model were matched against pupil experiments under multiple conditions. It is employed here to simulate responses to the swinging flashlight test, a procedure which is routinely practiced in

Spinal cord and nerve root monitoring in spine surgery and related procedures.

Intensive research in the field of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring has been performed directed at finding reliable stimulating and recording techniques and adequate anesthetic regimes applicable to spinal procedures. The aim is a comprehensive monitoring not only of afferent and efferent spinal cord pathways but also of sensory and motor nerve roots and cauda equina fibers. Conventional somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are complemented by motor evoked potentials, dermatomal sensory evoked potentials, spinal cord evoked potentials, evoked electromyography, sensory and motor fib

Differentiation between Aδ and C fibre evoked nociceptive reflexes by TTX resistance and opioid sensitivity in the cat.

The contribution of nociceptive Aδ-fibres and C-fibres of the central pad of the foot to nociceptive spinal flexor reflex pathways (FRA-type) and to nociceptive excitatory reflex pathways to foot extensors (non-FRA type) was investigated in high spinal cats. Persisting effects after complete blocking of A-fibres by tetrodotoxin (TTX) application were thus attributed to nociceptive C-fibres. The results revealed that both Aδ and C-fibre afferents contributed to nociceptive reflexes of a FRA-pattern and of a non-FRA pattern. Thereby, the effects of Aδ-fibres were evoked with a distinctly shorter
