Infections in severely traumatized children.

To study the incidence and types of infection among severely traumatized children, we reviewed the medical charts of 212 children, hospitalized following traumatic injury, who received antibiotics at sometime during their hospitalization. Infection occurred in 19%. Eleven children had trauma-related infections, whereas 29 (71% of those infected) had 36 nosocomial infections. Tracheitis, sepsis, and urinary tract infections were the most common nosocomial infections and were diagnosed in the second week (10 +/- 3 days) following injury. Nosocomial infections were more likely to develop in child

In vitro candidacidal activity of a synthetic killer decapeptide (KP) against Candida albicans cells adhered to resin acrylic discs.

BACKGROUND: Oral Candida spp., and C. albicans in particular, are considered as important aetiological agents in the pathogenesis of denture-induced stomatitis. Several studies have reported that C. albicans is able to easily adhere to different medical devices, such as vascular and urinary catheters or acrylic denture surfaces, and that adhesion is a fundamental step in the initial pathogenic process of colonization and further possible infection. Recently, a synthetic decapeptide (KP) derived from the sequence of a single-chain recombinant anti-idiotypic antibody, acting as a functional inte

Bacillus cereus-derived α-amylase disrupts biofilm formation and quorum sensing in multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a multidrug-resistant pathogen implicated in severe community- and hospital-acquired infections such as bacteremia, urinary tract infections, sepsis, and pneumonia. Biofilm formation, driven by extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), enhances its persistence and resistance to antibiotics. This study evaluated the anti-biofilm, antibacterial, and quorum-quenching activities of a novel α-amylase B. cereus-derived α-amylase against clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae. METHODS: The anti-biofilm activity of the enzyme was assessed via minimum bi

Hemolytic, antitumor, and antifungal activity of Eugenia gracillima Kiaersk. essential oil against Candida glabrata: In vitro and in vivo evaluation.

Eugenia gracillima Kiaersk. is traditionally used in the treatment of urinary tract infections, respiratory disorders, and skin conditions, and its essential oil (EgEO) from leaves has shown antioxidant, anti-protozoal, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effects, although its pharmacological potential remains insufficiently studied. This work aimed to evaluate the hemolytic, cytotoxic, toxicological, and antifungal properties of EgEO. The oil was extracted by hydrodistillation and chemically characterized by GC/MS, revealing 39 sesquiterpenes representing 97.02 % of the total composition. Hemoly

Species and antimicrobial resistance of uropathogens isolated from patients with urinary catheter.

A large number of hospitalized patients have an indwelling urinary tract catheter (IUC) placed at some time during their hospital stay and may suffer from catheter-associated urinary tract infections, the leading cause of nosocomial infections. Here we investigated the prevalence of uropathogens associated with catheter-associated urinary tract infections and assessed the resistances of these pathogens to commonly prescribed antibiotics. In total, 2,997 urine samples were examined at a regional hospital in Taipei, Taiwan in 2004: 1,948 (65%) samples from hospitalized patients and 1,049 (35%) s

ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ORGANISMS CAUSING URINARY TRACT INFECTION IN PATIENTS PRESENTING AT KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL, NAIROBI.

BACKGROUND: Changes in susceptibility patterns of bacterial pathogens isolated from urinary tract infections emphasize the need for regional surveillance to generate information that can be used in management of patients. Knowledge on the current status of antimicrobial resistance in uropathogens, and the prevalence of expanding spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in the isolates will guide policy formulations and encourage prudent use of antimicrobials. OBJECTIVE: Identify bacterial pathogens causing UTI and determine the association between the pathogens isolated from patients attending KNH. D

Refractory liver dysfunction was remarkably improved with chelating agents of Wilson's disease, in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus-like syndrome after a parvovirus B19 infection.

Parvovirus B19 infection has been reported to be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Liver dysfunction is frequently observed in SLE patients. However, liver dysfunction caused by an aberrant copper metabolism is rarely seen in patients with parvovirus B19 infection. We report a rare case of SLE-like and Wilson's disease (WD) mimicking symptoms that were simultaneously triggered by parvovirus B19 infection. A 29-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with high-grade fever, arthralgia, and oral ulcers following a parvovirus B19 infection. Laboratory tests showed elevated tran

A case of bowel schistosomiasis not adhering to endoscopic findings.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic worm infection caused by a species of trematodes, the Schistosomes. We may distinguish a urinary form from Schistosomes haematobium and an intestinal-hepatosplenic form mainly from Schistosomes mansoni characterized by nausea, meteorism, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, rectal tenesmus, and hepatosplenomegaly. These infections represent a major health issue in Africa, Asia, and South America, but recently S mansoni has increased its prevalence in other continents, such as Europe countries and North America, due to international travelers and immigrants, with severa

Short-duration treatment for catheter-associated urinary tract infections in critically ill trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: The optimal treatment duration for catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CA-UTI) in critically ill patients is unclear. The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends up to 14 days of therapy; however, short-duration therapy (SDT) for 3 days to 5 days is often used in trauma intensive care unit (ICU) patients at our center. The efficacy of SDT for CA-UTI has not been studied in this population. The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of SDT for CA-UTI in trauma ICU patients. METHODS: This retrospective study of patients with CA-UTI in a trauma ICU included patient

[Bacterial biofilm as a cause of urinary tract infection--pathogens, methods of prevention and eradication].

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are one of the common chronic and recurrent bacterial infections. Uropathogens which are able to form biofilm constitute a major etiological factor in UTI, especially among elder patients who are subject to long-term catheterization. It is caused by the capacity of the microorganisms for efficient and permanent colonization of tissues and also adhesion to diverse polymers used for urological catheter production such as propylene, polystyrene, silicone, polyvinyl chloride or silicone coated latex. Antibiotic therapy is the most common treatment for UTI. Fluoroquin

In vitro comparison of nitrofurazone- and silver alloy-coated foley catheters for contact-dependent and diffusible inhibition of urinary tract infection-associated microorganisms.

Two marketed antimicrobial-coated Foley catheters were compared for in vitro diffusible and contact-dependent inhibition of 11 urinary tract infection-associated microorganisms in an adherence-biofilm assay. Nitrofurazone-coated catheters significantly outperformed silver alloy-coated catheters for inhibitory activity, according to both inoculum broth and catheter sonicate counts, whether compared directly or against the corresponding control catheters. Although inhibition waned with catheter preincubation in saline, some organisms were inhibited even after a 48-h catheter preincubation, espec

Pathogen incidence and antibiotic resistance patterns of catheter-associated urinary tract infection in children.

The aim of this study was to characterize the pathogens and their antibiotic susceptibilities in children with catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) in order to optimize empirical antibiotic therapy and prophylaxis. from 2001 to 2006, 895 children with an indwelling catheter from 3 hospitals in China were included in this study, of whom 335 (37.4%) had CAUTI. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 450 bacterial isolates was performed using the ClSi broth and Kirby-bauer agar dilution methods. Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated pathogen, followed by Staphylococcus
