The National University of Singapore Heart Study measured cardiovascular risk factors, including selected plasma vitamins, on a random sample of the general population aged 30 to 69 years. Plasma vitamins A and E were normal and similar by ethnic group. Mean plasma vitamin A levels were: Chinese (males 0.68 and females 0.52 mg/L), Malays (males 0.67 and females 0.54 mg/L), and Indians (males 0.66 and females 0.51 mg/L). Mean plasma vitamin E levels were: Chinese (males 12.6 and females 12.6 mg/L), Malays (males 13.6 and females 13.3 mg/L), and Indians (males 12.9 and females 12.8 mg/L). No per

A baby centrally cyanosed from birth was investigated for a congenital cardiac defect. Echocardiography and angiography revealed patent foramen ovale without any other cardiac abnormality. Congenital methaemoglobinaemia was considered as the methaemoglobin level was 27%, suggesting either Hb M or a deficiency of the NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase (cytb5r) enzyme. Measurement of the cytb5r enzyme activity of this patient indicated a reduced level of 7.3 IU/g Hb (normal range 11.5-26.9 IU/g Hb). Sequencing the DIA 1 gene that encodes cytb5r revealed a novel C403T base change, predicting a proline

The article concisely illustrates the vitamin and mineral state of population of town of Slavutich, including personal of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station, children of pre-school age and pregnancy women, studied in 1992. Vitamins and minerals deficiency in the main of C and B vitamins and selenium was revealed in all the studied groups. Appropriate measures were developed and introduced to eliminate the detected dusturbances; but however some unsolved problems remained. Taking into account the forthcoming 20th anniversary of Chernobyl disarter, the authors of the come back to considering the ob

Anemia is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) at all stages, and it is nearly universal among patients with stage 5 CKD. Nonetheless, anemia of CKD is a diagnosis of exclusion. When anemia is detected in a patient with CKD, etiologies other than CKD must be considered and ruled out. Iron deficiency also is common among patients with CKD, and iron replenishment improves the anemia and the response to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Current guidelines for managing anemia of CKD recommend a hemoglobin goal of 11 to 12 g/dL, but lower hemoglobin may be acceptable for asymptomatic patie

Over the past few years, growing interest has been shown for the impact of dietary requirements and nutritional factors on chronic diseases. As a result, nutritional programs have been reinforced by public health policies. The precise role of micronutrients in chronic liver disease is currently receiving particular attention since abnormalities in vitamin levels are often detected. At present, treatment programs are focused on correcting vitamin deficiencies, which are frequently correlated to higher rates of comorbidities with poor outcomes. The literature reviewed here indicates that liver d

Indices of nutritional state were measured in 105 surgical patients. The indices were chosen to give information on protein-calorie malnutrition, anaemia, vitamin deficiency. Abnormal values for the various indices were common in the group as a whole and most frequent (50%) in patients who were still in hospital more than a week after major surgery. These patients had a high frequency of anaemia, vitamin deficiency, weight-loss, loss of arm-muscle bulk, and low plasma levels of transferrin and albumin. These abnormalities had gone almost entirely unrecognised, even in patients with sepsis afte

A meta-analysis of the most representative Spanish nutrition studies was carried out to identify inadequate intakes of vitamins, A, B1, B6, C, E, folate, iron, and calcium in children aged 4 to 18. Information on vegetable, fruit and fruit juice/beverage intake was also solicited. Data drawn from the selected studies yielded a total of 6540 children and adolescents in eight geographical areas. The sample was stratified by age (children: 4 to 14 years old and adolescents: 13-18 years old) and sex. Inadequate intakes (below two-thirds of the recommended values) were notable in children for vitam

Interactions between malnutrition and infection contribute directly to the health of individuals and communities. The relevance of this concept to the practice of clinical medicine, dentistry, and public health is supported by an imposing collection of evidence from the clinic, laboratory, and field. Malnutrition can interfere with any body mechanism that acts as a barrier to the multiplication or progress of infectious agents. This includes formation of specific antibodies, number and activity of phagocytes, integrity of skin, mucous membranes, and other tissues. Some of the less definite, no

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at risk for vitamin C (VitC) deficiency.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate VitC status and its determinants across the spectrum of CKD and healthy individuals.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we measured plasma VitC concentrations (<10 μmol/L = deficient, 10‒35 μmol/L = inadequate) in 62 individuals on dialysis, 41 with CKD stage 4/5, 42 kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) (together: CKD population), and in 447 living kidney donors, and 385 healthy controls (together: healthy population). In the CKD population, we assessed

Vitamin C (VitC) has several roles in the brain acting both as a specific and non-specific antioxidant. The brain upholds a very high VitC concentration and is able to preferentially retain VitC even during deficiency. The accumulation of brain VitC levels much higher than in blood is primarily achieved by the sodium dependent VitC transporter (SVCT2). This study investigated the effects of chronic pre-and postnatal VitC deficiency as well as the effects of postnatal VitC repletion, on brain SVCT2 expression and markers of oxidative stress in young guinea pigs. Biochemical analyses demonstrate

Obesity and the subsequent reprogramming of the white adipose tissue are linked to human disease-complexes including metabolic syndrome and concurrent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The dietary imposed dyslipidemia promotes redox imbalance by the generation of excess levels of reactive oxygen species and induces adipocyte dysfunction and reprogramming, leading to a low grade systemic inflammation and ectopic lipid deposition, e.g., in the liver, hereby promoting a vicious circle in which dietary factors initiate a metabolic change that furth

Severe vitamin C deficiency (ascorbic acid; AA) was induced in gulo-/- mice incapable of synthesizing their own AA. A number of behavioral measures were studied before and during the deprivation period, including a scorbutic period, during which weight loss was observed in the mice. Mice were then resuscitated with AA supplements. During the scorbutic period, gulo-/- mice showed decreased voluntary locomotor activity, diminished physical strength, and increased preference for a highly palatable sucrose reward. These behaviors all returned to control levels following resuscitation. Altered tria

In March 2002, there were reports of a hemorrhagic fever outbreak in western Afghanistan. It was later confirmed that the hemorrhagic symptoms and increased mortality were actually due to scurvy. Most aid workers did not include scurvy in the initial differential diagnosis because it is uncommon throughout the world and has mainly been reported in refugee populations in recent times. A rapid assessment confirmed the cases clinically, estimated a prevalence rate of 6.3% (a severe public health problem), and determined that the attack rates peaked each year in January and February (the end of th

The role of vitamin C in maintaining mucosal health is poorly documented. The purpose of this study was to examine the presence of oral mucosal lesions in subjects with low ascorbic acid (AA) levels in plasma. AA plasma levels of 843 working elderly people in six rural villages in Eastern Finland were determined. All subjects with low plasma AA levels (< or = 25 mumol/l) (n = 106) formed the study group. Controls with normal AA levels (> or = 50 mumol/l) (n = 103) were drawn from the same population. They were matched for age, sex and number of teeth. Oral mucosal lesions in all subjects were
