Isolated hypoglossal (XIIth cranial nerve) neurapraxia is a rare clinical presentation. We present a case of an isolated hypoglossal neurapraxia following exposure to +7.2 Gz in a human centrifuge. Although a variety of cervical spine injuries have been reported as a result of G exposure in an aircraft, no cranial nerve injuries have been reported. A review of the literature of isolated hypoglossal neurapraxia is presented with discussion of the probable cause of this nerve injury.

In addition to nausea and vomiting, motion sickness involves slowing of brain waves, loss of performance, inhibition of gastric motility and the Sopite Syndrome. The therapeutic effects of antimotion sickness drugs on these reactions were evaluated. The subjects were rotated to the M-III end-point of motion sickness. Intramuscular (IM) medications were then administered. Side effects before and after rotation were reported on the Cornell Medical Index. Brain waves were recorded on a Grass Model 6 Electroencephalograph (EEG), and gastric emptying was studied after an oral dose of 1 mCi Techneti

A longitudinal study evaluated the susceptibility to motion sickness in initially unfit subjects before and after an endurance training program. Motion stimulation was provided by the Precision Angular Mover, in which the subject was tumbled head over heels about an Earth-horizontal axis at 20 cycles per minute in darkness. Maximal aerobic power and the blood lactate response to submaximal exercise were evaluated with cycle ergometry. The training program caused significant improvements in VO2max and endurance capacity, and a significant decrease in percent body fat. There was a significant (p

Scopolamine (1.0 mg) and d-amphetamine (10 mg) were administered alone and in combination to 16 subjects (medical students), randomly assigned to testing sessions in a fully crossed-over (Latin square) within-subjects design. After being practiced to stability, 9 performance tests from a menu of portable microcomputer-based tests were administered double-blind over 4 weekly treatments (including a placebo). Differential effects of drugs on performance were found. Motor and perceptual speed tests appeared enhanced by d-amphetamine and not degraded by scopolamine. Two of the five cognitive tests

The aim of the present investigation was to determine to what extent training tolerance to one motion stimulus would generalize other motion experiences. Twenty subjects prone to motion sickness were selected and assigned to one of four groups after pretesting in a Dichgans and Brandt drum to determine their susceptibility to visually-induced apparent motion. They were also pretested with a VDT display of an expanding surface, and on a revolving/tilting chair. Subjects were assigned to one of the four groups by matching their mean tolerance to visually-induced motion. Subjects in the first gro

Approximately 60% of healthy human subjects experience motion sickness when exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of certain visual factors on susceptibility to motion sickness. Vection data (illusory self-motion), horizontal eye movement recordings, subjective motion sickness report, and a measure of gastric myoelectric activity (electrogastrogram, EGG) were obtained from 45 subjects, who were randomly divided into the following three groups: a control group that observed the entire visual field with no fixation, a group that fix

The susceptibility of rhesus monkeys to motion sickness was investigated using test conditions that are provocative for eliciting motion sickness in squirrel monkeys. Ten male rhesus monkeys and ten male Bolivian squirrel monkeys were rotated in the vertical axis at 150 degrees/s for a maximum duration of 45 min. Each animal was tested in two conditions, continuous rotation and intermittent rotation. None of the rhesus monkeys vomited during the motion tests but all of the squirrel monkeys did. Differences were observed between the species in the amount of activity that occurred during motion

Twenty-two different humoral parameters including stress-, gastrointestinal- and volume-regulating hormones were measured before and within 45 min after parabolic flight maneuvers of twenty healthy adult subjects. We compared hormonal data of motion sickness-affected participants with those unaffected. Changes in cortisol and vasoactive intestinal peptide plasma levels were significantly different (p less than 0.002 and p less than 0.004) between the two groups with increasing plasma levels of both hormones during motion sickness but decreasing levels within the control group. Growth hormone a

We have employed the primed constant infusion technique to investigate the metabolic effects of the organophosphate antidote, atropine, on glucose homeostasis in rats. This method utilizes the radioisotopes 6-3H-glucose to measure production and uptake and U-14C-glucose to measure oxidation. Our data indicate that glucose production significantly (p less than 0.05) increased (24.0 +/- 2.0 vs. 30.9 +/- 2.6 mumoles.kg-1.min-1) following atropine administration. The elevated rate of glucose turnover was associated with concomitant increases in glucose oxidation (8.3 +/- 0.6 vs. 12.0 +/- 0.8, mumo

The heart rate spectrum (HRS) was computed on eight pilots during simulated flight. Although respiratory-coupled heart rate variability (i.e., that produced by vagal inputs to the heart) varied three-fold across volunteers, each individual volunteer's data were very stable on three test days (median coefficient of variation = 5.4%). Atropine rapidly reduced heart rate variability at the respiratory frequency to the noise level (i.e., 74% decrease from predrug levels). Although there was no significant difference in the reduction induced by a 2 mg or 4 mg dose, there was a tendency for variabil

This study was designed to compare sleep organization at high altitude (HA) and sea level (SL) and to estimate the extent periodic breathing (PB) negatively influences arterial O2 saturation (SaO2). Six lowlanders were studied at SL and after 3 weeks spent at 3,800 m (La Paz, Bolivia). Three EEG leads, EOG, submental EMG, chest and abdominal motion, temperature of ventilated gas, and SaO2 were polygraphically recorded. Comparison of HA and SL data disclosed that: 1) Sleep organization was identical, with the same percentage of REM and stage 4. 2) PB (cycle length: 20 s; central apnea: 9 s) occ

Injuries to the cervical region have been associated with high-G loads sustained during air combat maneuvering (ACM) in high performance fighter aircraft. The spectrum of injuries ranges from mild neck pain to musculoskeletal strain, injury to the nerve roots or spinal cord, and fracture of the cervical spine. A 36-year-old fighter pilot with 2,800 h in tactical jet aircraft developed progressive cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), following an ACM flight. The patient was successfully treated with local intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin into the affected cervical muscles, resu

The purpose of these experiments was to test the hypothesis that reduced size of the leg muscle compartment following exposure to long-duration microgravity would be associated with increased leg compliance. Eight men, 31-45 years of age, were measured for vascular compliance of the calf and serial circumferences of the thigh and calf before, during and after 30 d of continuous 6 degrees head-down bedrest. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) of muscle, fat, and bone compartments in the thigh and calf were determined pre- and post-bedrest by computed tomography. Calculated leg volumes decreased (p less

From 1958 to 1986, 27 crewmembers with suspected sleep disorders were referred to the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. The presenting complaint in most cases was excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Prior to 1984, evaluations included neurologic and psychiatric testing, screening laboratory studies, and awake and asleep electroencephalography. Polysomnography and sleep latency studies were included after 1984. In the majority of cases, the etiology of the complaint could not be determined. The prevalence of EDS is estimated to be between 0.3% and 4.0% of the adult population. Major causes cit

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 30 d of 6 degrees headdown bedrest (BR) on the in vivo strength of skeletal muscle. Peak angle specific (0.78 rad below horizontal) torque of the knee extensor (KE) and flexor (KF) muscle groups of both limbs was assessed during unilateral efforts at four speeds (0.52, 1.74, 2.97 and 4.19 rad.s-1) during concentric and at three speeds (0.52, 1.74 and 2.97 rad.s-1) during eccentric actions. The average decrease (p less than 0.05) of peak angle specific torque directly post-BR for the KE across speeds of concentric and eccentric actions was

Scopolamine is the most effective single drug for the prophylaxis and treatment of motion sickness. However, oral or injected scopolamine displays a comparatively short duration of action (5-6 hours), and leads to deleterious side effects on autonomic and central nervous system cholinergic functions. The transdermal scopolamine system was designed to reduce these problems, but while it does deliver scopolamine over a prolonged time period (72 h), deleterious side effects are also produced. Transdermal scopolamine provides significant motion sickness protection, similar in extent to that provid

This experiment was undertaken to assess the degree of stimulus generalization in visually-induced motion sickness. Sixteen subjects participated in six sessions in which they were exposed to a rotating field of vertical stripes for five 4-min trials. This stimulus elicited the perception of self-vection. In the first three sessions, the stripes were illuminated by one monochromatic light (red or green) and in the last three sessions, the stripes were illuminated by the other monochromatic light. Magnitude estimates of motion sickness increased significantly within sessions, but the rate at wh

The dynamics of vestibular nystagmus were measured in 42 military student pilots (age 19 to 21). Their responses were compared with 40 non-flying subjects of similar age who were also fulfilling requirements for the mandatory Swiss military service. The following differences emerged: the time constant of the nystagmus response after vestibular stimulation was shorter (p less than 0.001; t-test) in student pilots, whereas the gain tended to be higher (p less than 0.025). These changes in the response dynamics are attributed to habituation. Student pilots were additionally tested with conflictin
