Estimating the Expected Health and Economic Benefits of Price Increases Via Taxation to Counter the Dual Combustible and Smokeless Tobacco Epidemics in India.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is a major global health risk, causing over eight million deaths annually. The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control requires member countries to adopt a raft of comprehensive policy measures, including taxation. In India, 28% of adults consume tobacco, with a high prevalence of both combustible and smokeless forms, contributing to a substantial health burden. To inform tobacco tax policy in India, we estimated the potential impact of taxation on lowering the prevalence of use and the associated health and economic burden. METHODS: We empl

Burden of kidney cancer in China from 1990 to 2021 and predictions for 2036: an age-period-cohort analysis of global burden of disease study 2021.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the temporal trends and risk factors of kidney cancer (KC) burden from 1990 to 2021, evaluate its age, period, and cohort effects, and project the disease burden over the next 15 years. METHODS: Data were derived from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. A joinpoint regression model was used to estimate the average annual percentage change (AAPC) in KC prevalence and mortality, while age-period-cohort analysis was applied to estimate age, period, and cohort effects. We extended the Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model to predict the disease

The burden of rheumatoid arthritis and low back pain in North Africa and Middle East from 1990 to 2019: Results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and low back pain (LBP) are among the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The need for investigation of regional and local patterns of these two MSDs seems inevitable for better policy-making. The current study presents updated results of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 and reports the burden of RA and LBP in North Africa and Middle East (NAME) countries from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and risk fac

Clinical Characteristics and Healthcare Resource Utilization for Patients with Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II) in the United States: A Retrospective Chart Review.

Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II; Hunter syndrome) is a rare, X-linked, life-limiting lysosomal storage disease characterized by a deficiency in the activity of the enzyme iduronate-2-sulfatase. Accumulation of glycosaminoglycans in tissues and organs throughout the body causes cellular damage, leading to multisystemic disease manifestations. Patients generally require multidisciplinary care across a wide range of specialties. Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the healthcare needs of patients with MPS II and to explore the impact of treatment on disease burden and h

Breast Cancer and Beyond: Screening, Psychosocial, and Socioeconomic Dimensions of Patient Experience During Radiotherapy in a United Arab Emirates Cohort.

Background Breast cancer care extends beyond tumor-directed treatment to include screening behavior, psychosocial well-being, body image, family support, and financial and logistical burden. These issues are particularly relevant during radiotherapy, where repeated hospital attendance may amplify practical and emotional stressors. This study described multidimensional patient-experience domains among women receiving breast cancer care through the radiotherapy pathway at a tertiary cancer center in the United Arab Emirates. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 30 wom

The association of body composition and fat distribution with hypertension in community-dwelling older adults: the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of the global burden of disability and premature mortality has caused by hypertension. It seems that the relationship between obesity and hypertension is not only associated with excessive body fat mass (FM) but also with body adipose distribution patterns. The present study investigated the association between regional fat distribution using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and hypertension in older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed using the data from Bushehr Elderly Health Program (BEH) on a total of 2419 participants aged 60 and

[A practicing physician's view on obesity].

Overweight and obesity are worldwide problems, its health and psychosocial burden on the individual and on society are tremendous. Diagnosing obesity is rather easy, and is based on simple anthropometric measurements, such as body weight, height and waist circumference. The different classes of obesity are determined by body mass index, which, together with waist circumference and comorbid conditions and other risk factors determine the individual risk for mortality and morbidity. Obesity is due to genetic and environmental factors, mainly is the consequence of excess calorie intake and sedent

Metabolic-vascular burden and subsequent Parkinson's disease across Chinese, English, and European ageing cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic and vascular disorders have been linked to Parkinson's disease (PD), but population-based evidence remains inconsistent. We examined whether harmonized metabolic-vascular burden was associated with subsequent reported PD across Chinese, English, and European ageing cohorts. METHODS: We analyzed participants aged 50 years or older in CHARLS, ELSA, and SHARE after excluding reported PD at exposure baseline. Metabolic-vascular burden was scored from 0 to 4 by summing diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia or high cholesterol, and body mass index > = 25 kg/m2. Subsequent repor

GPAT3 protects against lipid stress-induced ferroptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma: From multi-omics analysis to functional validation.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of metabolic-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing, with obesity emerging as a key causal factor. However, the molecular mechanisms linking lipid metabolic dysregulation to HCC progression and therapeutic vulnerability remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed Global Burden of Disease 2021 data to assess liver cancer burden attributable to metabolic risks from 1990 to 2021. Mendelian randomization was used to evaluate causal associations between metabolic traits and liver cancer risk. TCGA, GTEx, and GEO datasets were integrated to identify lipid str

Quantifying the contribution of modifiable risk factors for progression of MGUS to multiple myeloma in a Veteran population.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the most common plasma cell dyscrasia in the United States with tremendously high burden. MM is preceded by a premalignant condition, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Although several risk factors for progression have been identified (e.g., older age, male sex, black race, obesity, chemical exposure), their relative contributions remain unclear. Unlike other malignancies, such evidence is lacking for MM despite its high burden. To identify potential intervention strategies that can effectively prevent progression in patients with MGUS, we quan

Effectiveness of a novel intervention (Super Rehab) in overweight patients with atrial fibrillation (SuRe AF): protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia worldwide, associated with significant morbidity, mortality and healthcare utilisation. AF rhythm control strategies demonstrate attrition with time. A number of modifiable AF risk factors contribute to an atrial cardiomyopathy culminating in incident AF but importantly also recurrence. We propose that a novel multidisciplinary lifestyle intervention (Super Rehab, SR) may improve symptoms and AF burden. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a single-centre, randomised controlled study. Patients aged ≥18 years with a body m

Integrating PrEP and Sexual Reproductive Health Services for Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa: A Scoping Review.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa bear a disproportionate burden of the global HIV epidemic. Integrating PrEP into sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services offers a promising strategy to enhance HIV prevention by aligning services with South African AGYW's existing health-seeking behaviors. We performed a scoping review to explore considerations for integrating PrEP into SRH services for AGYW in South Africa. The review involved a comprehensive search in PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL to identify peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2024. Eligible studies rep

All Obstructive Sleep Apnea Events Are Not Created Equal: The Relationship between Event-related Hypoxemia and Physiologic Response.

Rationale: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity is typically assessed by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a frequency-based metric that allocates equal weight to all respiratory events. However, more severe events may have a greater physiologic impact. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the degree of event-related hypoxemia would be associated with the postevent physiologic response. Methods: Patients with OSA (AHI, ⩾5/h) from the multicenter Canadian Sleep and Circadian Network cohort were studied. Using mixed-effect linear regression, we examined associations bet
