Double-layer capsule of mesoporous ZnO@SnO2 for sensitive detection of triethylamine.

To overcome obstacles such as low response and poor selectivity of pure ZnO and SnO2 gas sensors, the ZnO@SnO2 sensor was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis. The samples were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, HRTEM, N2 adsorption-desorption and other techniques. The results show that ZnO@SnO2 forms an n-n-type heterostructure and presents a double-layer capsule with a size of 0.5-4 μm. The results show that compared with pure ZnO and SnO2, the ZnO@SnO2 sensor exhibits a higher response (138.9) to 50 ppm triethylamine (TEA) at 152°C, which is 19.56 times that of the pure ZnO sensor and 21.7 ti

Inverted Meckel's diverticulum diagnosed using capsule endoscopy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum is a common asymptomatic congenital gastrointestinal anomaly. However, its presentation as an inverted Meckel's diverticulum is a rare complication, of which few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE SUMMARY: Here, we report the case of a 33-year-old man with iron deficiency anemia without manifestation of gastrointestinal bleeding. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and total colonoscopy were performed, but no abnormalities were found within the observed area. Finally, a capsule endoscopy was performed and offered us a clue to subsequently confir

Use of small-bowel capsule endoscopy in cases of equivocal celiac disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Seronegative villous atrophy (SNVA), raised intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), and crypt hyperplasia on duodenal histology can be secondary to celiac disease (CD) or other causes such as medications or infections. Our aims were to assess the role of small-bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) in these patients and to ascertain whether findings on SBCE at diagnosis can predict disease outcome. METHODS: Patients (n = 177) with SNVA, IELs, ± crypt hyperplasia on duodenal histology were studied. These patients all had an equivocal diagnosis of CD. RESULTS: Overall, 56 patients (31

Deciphering the role of the capsule of Klebsiella pneumoniae during pathogenesis: A cautionary tale.

Extracellular capsule polysaccharides increase the cellular fitness under abiotic stresses and during competition with other bacteria. They are best-known for their role in virulence, particularly in human hosts. Specifically, capsules facilitate tissue invasion by enhancing bacterial evasion from phagocytosis and protect cells from biocidal molecules. Klebsiella pneumoniae is a worrisome nosocomial pathogen with few known virulence factors, but the most important one is its capsule. In this issue, Tan et al. assess the fitness advantage of the capsule by competing a wild-type strain against f…

RAGE-dependent NF-kB inflammation processes in the capsule of frozen shoulders.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of frozen shoulder (FS) remains uncertain. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) cause the cross-linking and stabilization of collagen and are increased in FS. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the pathogenesis of FS by evaluating the receptor of AGE (RAGE)-dependent pathways. METHODS: Tissue samples of the coracohumeral ligament (CHL) and anterior inferior glenohumeral ligament (IGHL) were collected from 33 patients with FS, with severe stiffness, and 25 with rotator cuff tears (RCTs) as controls. Gene expression levels of RAGE, high-mobility group box 1 (H

The human Descemet's membrane and lens capsule: Protein composition and biomechanical properties.

The Descemet's membrane (DM) and the lens capsule (LC) are two ocular basement membranes (BMs) that are essential in maintaining stability and structure of the cornea and lens. In this study, we investigated the proteomes and biomechanical properties of these two materials to uncover common and unique properties. We also screened for possible protein changes during diabetes. LC-MS/MS was used to determine the proteomes of both BMs. Biomechanical measurements were conducted by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in force spectroscopy mode, and complemented with immunofluorescence microscopy. Proteome

Microcrack surface density in the human otic capsule: An unbiased stereological quantification.

Bone is continuously remodeled to repair and strengthen degenerative bone with accumulating dead osteocytes and microfractures. Inner ear osteoprotegerin (OPG)-mediated inhibition of otic capsular bone remodeling causes excessive perilabyrinthine bone degeneration. Consequently, microcracks accumulate around the inner ear. Microcracks cause osteocyte apoptosis and may disrupt the canalicular network connecting osteocytes. Despite their linear microscopic appearance, microcracks are three-dimensional disruption planes and represent surface areas inside a tissue space. With an elevated microcrac
