Biomarkers for radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis.

Treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is rarely personalized, since predictors of disease course are lacking. The severity of RA can be measured objectively by radiographic progression. The most reliable way to measure radiographic progression is in a longitudinal cohort with serial time points, scoring on a quantitative scale, with a validated scoring method and trained readers. Current models used to predict radiographic progression are based on C-reactive protein and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies. Other biomarkers could increase the prognostic ability of these models.

Jacobsen syndrome without thrombocytopenia: a case report and review of the literature.

Jacobsen syndrome (JS), a rare disorder with multiple dysmorphic features, is caused by the terminal deletion of chromosome 11q. Typical features include mild to moderate psychomotor retardation, trigonocephaly, facial dysmorphism, cardiac defects, and thrombocytopenia, though none of these features are invariably present. The estimated occurrence of JS is about 1/100,000 births. The female/male ratio is 2:1. The patient admitted to our clinic at 3.5 years of age with a cardiac murmur and facial anomalies. Facial anomalies included trigonocephaly with bulging forehead, hypertelorism, telecanth

Curcumin suppresses growth of mesothelioma cells in vitro and in vivo, in part, by stimulating apoptosis.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive, asbestos-related malignancy of the thoracic pleura. Although, platinum-based agents are the first line of therapy, there is an urgent need for second-line therapies to treat the drug-resistant MPM. Cell cycle as well as apoptosis pathways are frequently altered in MPM and thus remain attractive targets for intervention strategies. Curcumin, the major component in the spice turmeric, alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutics has been under investigation for a number of cancers. In this study, we investigated the biological and mo

A new photosensitive pigment of the euryhaline teleost, Gillichthys mirabilis.

Retinal extracts have been prepared from dark-adapted mudsuckers by treatment of retinal tissue or of isolated outer segments of the visual cells with digitonin solution. The extracts were examined spectrophotometrically and found to absorb light maximally between the wave lengths of 488 and 510 mmicro, depending on the proportion of yellow impurities and light-sensitive pigment present. This photosensitive pigment was shown to be homogeneous by partial bleaching of the extracts with monochromatic light of various wave lengths from 390 to 660 mmicro. The mudsucker pigment was specifically demo

Beta-Defensin1 from Ctenopharyngodon idella exerts immunomodulatory effects through CiHsp70-mediated antigen processing and presentation pathway activation.

Beta-Defensin1 from Ctenopharyngodon idella (CiBD1) is an important antimicrobial peptide in the defensin family, which possesses a high antibacterial activity. But its immunomodulatory effects and mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, transcription levels of the immune-related genes in the immune-related tissues, and phagocytosis and respiratory burst activities of C. idella head kidney macrophages after CiBD1 overexpression were firstly detected. The results showed that CiBD1 overexpression could significantly up-regulate transcription levels of all the tested genes in the immune-rel

Are perfluoroalkyl substances in water and fish from drinking water source the major pathways towards human health risk?

Due to potential adverse effects and bioaccumulation in biota and humans, perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have raised wide attention in recent years. Ingestion is a vital pathway for PFASs to transmit to humans especially through water and fish. In present study, PFASs in water and fish from the drinking water source of Beijing in China were investigated. Three layers of water were collected in order to find the connection between concentrations of PFASs and depth of water, which showed no prominent correlation. PFASs in water from Miyun Reservoir with concentrations of 5.30-8.50 ng/L, were

Results of total DNA measurement in koi tissue by Koi Herpes Virus real-time PCR.

Koi Herpes Virus (KHV) has been classified recently as a member of the Alloherpesviridae within the Herpesvirales order (Waltzek et al., 2005). Although one of the unique features of Herpesviridae, the sister family of Herpesvirales, is latent infection, it has not been demonstrated consistently that KHV of Alloherpesviridae can cause latent infection and be reactivated from latency. To investigate if KHV genomic DNA is present in koi exposed to KHV infection, 10 healthy fish were investigated from a koi population with a history of a KHV outbreak. No gross lesions or microscopic changes were

Geno-cytotoxicity and congenital malformations produced by relevant environmental concentrations of aluminum, diclofenac and their mixture on Cyprinus carpio. An interactions study.

Several studies highlight the presence of aluminum and diclofenac in water bodies around the world and their ability to induce oxidative stress and a negative effect on biomolecules in several aquatic species. However, studies evaluating the toxic effect of mixtures of these contaminants are scarce. The objective of this work was to determine the genotoxic, cytotoxic and embryotoxic effect of the mixture of aluminum and diclofenac at environmentally relevant concentrations on Cyprinus carpio. Juveniles of Cyprinus carpio were exposed to 0.31 μg L-1 of diclofenac, 24.45 mg L-1 of aluminum, and

Invasion of fish epithelial cells by Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida: evidence for receptor specificity, and effect of capsule and serum.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida is a fish pathogen which causes serious disease in commercial warmwater fish species. Because information on the initial stages of the infection is scarce, an investigation of the invasion ability of this pathogen was undertaken utilizing a fish epithelial cell line (epithelioma papillosum carpio, EPC), a virulent capsulated strain of P. damselae (MT1415), an avirulent non-capsulated strain of P. damselae (EPOY-8803-ii) and Escherichia coli HB101 as a non-invasive control. P. damselae was found to be able to adhere to and invade fish epithelial cells an

Using network pharmacology and structural biology to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which Macrolactin A protects against aphids.

Aphids are major agricultural pests that cause severe crop damage. While chemical pesticides remain the dominant control strategy, their associated environmental contamination and resistance issues necessitate the development of eco-friendly biopesticides. This study employed network pharmacology and structural biology to elucidate the molecular mechanism by which Macrolactin A protects against aphids, with validation through molecular docking, 100-ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and enzymatic assays. Target prediction identified five aphid proteins as potential targets of Macrolactin

Inducing adipocyte hyperplasia improves growth performance, alleviates hepatic steatosis and counteracts muscle quality deterioration in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) fed with high-carbohydrate diet.

High-carbohydrate diet (HCD) is commonly used in aquaculture to reduce feed costs, but its use in carnivorous fish is constrained by the low carbohydrate tolerance of these species. Recent studies in herbivorous grass carp have shown that promoting adipocyte hyperplasia shifts adipose tissue expansion from pathological hypertrophy to healthy hyperplasia, thereby improving carbohydrate tolerance. However, whether this strategy is equally effective in carnivorous fish remains unknown. In this study, we fed largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) with a control diet, an HCD, or HCD supplemented w

Molecular interactions and biomarker responses to pharmaceutical contaminants in aquatic species.

Pharmaceutical residues are increasingly detected in freshwater systems, yet mechanistic links between sub-lethal exposure and organ-level injury in fish remain limited. This study assessed 21-day effects of carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac (DCF) and fluoxetine (FLX) on Labeo rohita using integrated hepatic and renal biomarker panels supported by molecular docking. Fish were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations under semi-static conditions, and responses were quantified using standard biochemical assays. Hepatic markers included cytochrome P4501A activity (CYP1A/EROD), uridine diphosphate-glucu
