Anterior screw fixation of a dislocated type II odontoid fracture facilitated by transoral and posterior cervical manual reduction.

BACKGROUND: Early fixation of type II odontoid fractures has been shown to provide high rates of long-term stabilization and osteosynthesis. CASE: In this report, the authors present the case of a patient with a locked type II odontoid fracture treated by anterior screw fixation facilitated by closed transoral and posterior cervical manual reduction. CONCLUSION: While transoral intraoperative reduction of a partially displaced odontoid fracture has previously been described, the authors present the first case utilizing this technique in the treatment of a completely dislocated type II odonto

The expanded endonasal approach for an endoscopic transnasal clipping and aneurysmorrhaphy of a large vertebral artery aneurysm: technical case report.

OBJECTIVE: Aneurysms of the vertebral artery are rare, comprising less than 5% of all aneurysms. They can present with subarachnoid hemorrhage, medullary compression, and cranial neuropathies. In consideration of their surrounding regional anatomy, they present a formidable surgical challenge to the neurosurgeon using traditional techniques. Recent advances in endoscopic transnasal surgery have provided an additional approach for the treatment of these difficult lesions. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present a case of a large vertebral artery aneurysm causing mass effect on the medulla. Initial t

Treatment of Odontoid Fractures in Elderly Patients Using C1/C2 Instrumented Fusion Supplemented With Bilateral Atlantoaxial Joint Spacers: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fractures are among the most common traumatic injuries in elderly patients, with the odontoid process being frequently affected. As this patient group usually has high rates of comorbidity and chronic diseases, a nonoperative approach may offer a reasonable solution for a favorable fracture pattern. OBJECTIVE: We modified the procedure by implanting a bilateral atlantoaxial joint spacer (model DTRAX) into the joint space and review our experience utilizing this technique for the treatment of patients with a fracture of the odontoid process. METHODS: A retrospective evaluat

[Magerls technique of c1-2 fixation.].

Magerl technique of transarticular fixation of C1-2 by screws is one of the possibilities of the antlantoaxial fusion. For the first time it was published by Magerl and Seemann in 1987 but the first author had been performing it already since 1979. The principle of the method consists in the placement of two screws from the dorsal approach through atlantoaxial joints in the sagittal plane. The main indication for the Magerl's C1-2 fixation is an acute or chronic instability and a painful osteoarthritis of atlantoaxial joints. Contraindicated is this method only in massive destruction of the la

Preliminary validation of a web-based MRI scoring system for children with chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (ChRonic nonbacterial Osteomyelitis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring: CROMRIS).

BACKGROUND: The ChRonic nonbacterial Osteomyelitis Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scoring (CROMRIS) tool was developed to assess specific characteristics of bone and soft tissue inflammation on MR images of patients with CNO; however, this tool was labor intensive to utilize. We aimed (1) to refine and adapt this scoring method, (2) to assess the usability of this web-based CROMRIS system among radiologists and (3) to evaluate the absolute agreement of the components and summary CROMRIS scores at each body site, and the interrater reliability. METHODS: We used a qualitative, user-centered design

Associations across 22 dental and craniovertebral anomalies or variations, sagittal skeletal relationships, and vertical growth patterns: a comprehensive epidemiological study of 43 dentoskeletal traits.

INTRODUCTION: Despite researchers' recent interest in identifying links between some dental and craniovertebral abnormalities, there are many important, unassessed gaps in our knowledge of this matter. In addition, previous samples were small. This large study aimed to examine, for the first time, the occurrence/severity of numerous dental and skeletal anomalies or variations and their correlations with each other and with growth patterns. METHODS: This epidemiological study was conducted on pretreatment radiographs of 1194 patients from 3 cities (815 females). Skeletal sagittal skeletal rela

CYFIP2: potential pancreatic cancer biomarker and immunotherapeutic target.

OBJECTIVE: It has been shown that the CYFIP2 (Cytoplasmic FMR1-interacting protein 2) gene is apoptosis p53-dependent and is associated with poor prognosis in malignant tumors such as gastric cancer and other and cervical cancer. However, the prognostic potential of CYFIP2 in pancreatic cancer remains unclear. In this work, we first explain the great potential of CYFIP2 malignant progression from a broader perspective (pan-cancer) and confirm its oncogenic value in pancreatic cancer. METHODS: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database, CELL and GEO databases we

[Management of Odontoid Fractures with Compression Screw and Anterior Transarticular Screw Fixation in Elderly Patients].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY In the management of dens axis fractures in patients older than 65 years of age the posterior approach is preferred due to osteoporosis and the risk of a failure of anterior osteosynthesis. The posterior approach, however, is associated with a higher incidence of complications. A combination of anterior transarticular fixation of C1/2 (ATS) with compression osteosynthesis of dens axis significantly increases the stability of osteosynthesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the period from 2009 to 2015 our hospital admitted 13 patients older than 65 years of age with a diagnosed typ

Role of capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent inputs from the masseter muscle in the C1 spinal neurons responding to tooth-pulp stimulation in rats.

The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the convergence of inputs from masseter muscle (MM) and tooth pulp (TP) onto C1 spinal neurons and to determine whether the afferent fibers express the functional vanilloid receptor (VR1). Extracellular single-unit recordings were made from 61 C1 units responding to TP electrical stimulation with a constant temporal relationship to a digastric electromyogram signal in pentobarbital anesthetized rats. Eighty-four percent of C1 neurons responding to TP stimulation also responded to the ipsilateral MM stimulation. Of these neurons, 61% were consider

Pan-cancer expression, methylation, and prognostic significance of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in tumor immunology.

The α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR), functioning as a critical ligand-gated ion channel in the nervous system, has recently been implicated to play a role in various non-neuronal tissues. Nonetheless, a comprehensive understanding of its expression patterns, mechanisms of epigenetic control, and functions within the tumor microenvironment (TME) across various malignancies is still lacking. To address this gap, we performed an extensive multi-cancer investigation of CHRNA7 spanning 31 tumor types, leveraging datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Genotype-Tissue Expression data
