Respiratory tract viral infection caused by viruses or bacteria is one of the most common diseases in human worldwide, while those caused by emerging viruses, such as the novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV that caused the pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, China most recently, have posed great threats to global public health. Identification of the causative viral pathogens of respiratory tract viral infections is important to select an appropriate treatment, save people's lives, stop the epidemics, and avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics. Conventional diagnostic tests, such as the assays for rapid detect

Precise information about varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection in first-trimester fetuses remains sketchy. After varicella infection was diagnosed in a woman, her 12-week-old fetus was aborted and was investigated, by histological examination, virus culturing, polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization (ISH), and immunohistochemistry (IHC), for the presence of VZV infection. Only the results of the histological examination suggested the presence of alpha -herpesvirus infection, in the gastrointestinal tract and liver; results of ISH were positive for VZV, and results of IHC staining we

We report a case of Mediterranean lymphoma treated with antibiotics. A 74-year-old woman visited the hospital due to abdominal pain. Endoscopic examination showed erosions and ulcerations on duodenal mucosa. Biopsy specimens histologically revealed massive infiltration of small-sized lymphocytes and plasma cells in subepithelial mucosa. Immunoperoxidase staining showed that the infiltrating cells were positively stained with anti-alpha heavy chain. Serum IgA concentration was elevated and immunoelectrophoresis of the serum demonstrated monoclonal protein composed of alpha heavy chain. During t

BACKGROUND: Enterococci are facultative anaerobic, binary, or chained Gram-positive cocci. The gastrointestinal colonization of hospitalized patients is the most important reservoir of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. We aimed to evaluate retrospectively the screening results of vancomycin-resistant enterococci, studied by the simultaneous (real-time) polymerase chain reaction method on rectal swabs of adult and pediatric patients hospitalized in our hospital in 2019-2021.
METHODS: Adult and pediatric patients were included in our study between Jan 2019 and Dec 2021. The results of vancomyci

Inter-α-trypsin inhibitor (IαI) family members are ancient and unique molecules that have evolved over several hundred million years of vertebrate evolution. IαI is a complex containing the proteoglycan bikunin to which heavy chain proteins are covalently attached to the chondroitin sulfate chain. Besides its matrix protective activity through protease inhibitory action, IαI family members interact with extracellular matrix molecules and most notably hyaluronan, inhibit complement, and provide cell regulatory functions. Recent evidence for the diverse roles of the IαI family in both biology an

UNLABELLED: N-acetyl- and N-glycolylneuraminic acids (Sia) and α2β1 integrin are frequently used by rotaviruses as cellular receptors through recognition by virion spike protein VP4. The VP4 subunit VP8*, derived from Wa rotavirus, binds the internal N-acetylneuraminic acid on ganglioside GM1. Wa infection is increased by enhanced internal Sia access following terminal Sia removal from main glycan chains with sialidase. The GM1 ligand cholera toxin B (CTB) reduces Wa infectivity. Here, we found sialidase treatment increased cellular GM1 availability and the infectivity of several other human (

We characterized the effect of orthotopic liver transplantation on the catabolism of branched-chain L-amino acids in a female patient with classical form of maple syrup urine disease. Transplantation was performed at the age of 7.4 years due to a terminal liver failure triggered by a hepatitis A infection. Since then, the patient is on an unrestricted diet and plasma concentrations of branched-chain L-amino and 2-oxo acids are stable, yet at moderately increased levels (2- to 3-fold of control). L-Alloisoleucine concentrations, however, remained remarkably elevated (> 5-fold of control). In vi

Neurons have a restricted expression of MHC heavy chain molecules which prevents presentation of antigens of infecting viruses. As a result, such infected cells escape immune surveillance and allow the establishment of noncytolytic persistent infection. Here we show that a chronic noncytolytic viral infection both in vitro and in vivo selectively perturbed the expression of GAP-43, a protein that plays a central role in neuronal plasticity processes accompanying learning and memory. GAP-43 expression was greatly decreased in the hippocampus, an area of heightened viral replication, while synap

Sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs) make up a class of cell-surface glycans known to mediate pathogen engagement. Glycopolymers mimicking sGAGs can reduce or prevent pathogen attachment. However, their high anticoagulant activity limits their biomedical applications. Here, we report the synthesis and evaluation of synthetic glycopolymers mimicking sGAGs with high antiviral activity but low anticoagulant activity. The key lies in the control of the density of carbohydrates presented along the polymeric backbone. This was accomplished via copolymerization of carbohydrate with noncarbohydrate mon

The transcription factor BHLHE40 is an emerging regulator of the immune system. Recent studies suggest that BHLHE40 regulates type 2 immunity, but this has not been demonstrated in vivo. We found that BHLHE40 is required in T cells for a protective TH2 cell response in mice infected with the helminth Heligmosomoides polygyrus bakeri H. polygyrus elicited changes in gene and cytokine expression by lamina propria CD4+ T cells, many of which were BHLHE40 dependent, including production of the common β (CSF2RB) chain family cytokines GM-CSF and IL-5. In contrast to deficiency in GM-CSF or IL-5 alo

Mycoplasmas, including Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma species, are uncommon but important causes of septic arthritis, especially affecting immunosuppressed patients. Many of the reported cases have been associated with congenital immunodeficiency disorders, especially hypogammaglobulinemia. Mycoplasmas are difficult to grow in the laboratory, and these infections may be underdiagnosed using culture techniques. We report a case of a 21-year-old woman with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and hip arthroplasties treated with rituximab and adalimumab who developed urogenital infections and soft tissue abs

A 5-year-old Massachusetts resident developed hard tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia miyamotoi. A partially engorged Ixodes scapularis tick was removed from her scalp and identified as infected with B. miyamotoi using polymerase chain reaction. Two weeks later, she developed an illness compatible with B. miyamotoi infection that included fatigue and recurrent fever. The diagnosis was confirmed by B. miyamotoi seroconversion.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is potentially a fatal disease transmitted by tick bite, close contact with blood or tissues of infected humans or viraemic livestock. We present the clinical course of 2 breastfeeding women with CCHF and their babies. Both the mothers had positive reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction for CCHF virus in blood and it was negative in breast milk. At follow-up, babies did not develop CCHF infection.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important cause of acute hepatitis in humans. Zoonotic transmission between pigs and humans has been confirmed. Human HEV infection is common in Nigeria; however, characterization of HEV infection in other species was lacking. The objective of this study was to investigate HEV infection in Nigerian pigs. A total of 286 serum samples from six states in Nigeria were tested for presence of anti-HEV IgG. Ninety fecal samples from one of these states (Plateau State) were tested for presence of HEV RNA. The overall prevalence of anti-HEV IgG-positive or suspect-positive

Lipid metabolism of monkey kidney (LLC-MK-2) cells and cells infected with a Chlamydia trachomatis strain lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) was studied. The protein-to-lipid ratio of normal MK-2 cells was found to increase linearly over a 60-h period of incubation. The protein-to-lipid ratio of the infected cells was similar to that in normal cells until 36 h after infection, when a plateau in the ratio was observed. Lipid synthesis of the infected cells was found to be inhibited after 48 h of infection. Turnover of host lipids did not appear to be markedly altered by infection with LGV over a 48

Throughout the literature, many pathologic lung lesions and complications following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection have been reported including pneumatocele formation which could potentially lead to pneumothorax development. This case report discusses the clinical course of a 45-day-old male with respiratory distress, whose condition worsened over time. Investigations revealed elevated COVID-19 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies with negative COVID polymerase chain reaction (PCR) accompanied by radiologic evidence of pneumatocele formation, which was further complicated by pneumo

Molecular technology has led to the discovery of previously unrecognized Cryptosporidium species in new hosts, such as C. canis in humans. The notion that dogs may transmit Cryptosporidium species to humans has significant public health implications, and additional studies are merited. The purpose of this study was to examine a group of kenneled dogs to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium species infection and to identify parasite species. Prevalence of active infection was 71%. Six positive samples were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene

The accuracy and suitability of use of a single intravaginal swab (SIS) for polymerase chain reaction detection of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, and human papillomavirus infection was assessed in a cross-sectional study of 841 active-duty military women. The SIS, compared with standard diagnostic tests, allowed detection of more gonorrhea, more chlamydial infection, and more trichomoniasis. Sensitivity and specificity of SIS detection compared with adjudicated true-positive diagnoses were 95.8% and 97.8%, respectively, for gonorrhea, 94.6% and 99.3% for c
