Antibody response of cattle to vaccination with commercial modified live rabies vaccines in Guatemala.

Vampire bat rabies is a public and animal health concern throughout Latin America. As part of an ecological study of vampire bat depredation on cattle in southern Guatemala, we conducted a vaccine seroconversion study among three dairy farms. The main objectives of this cross sectional and cohort study were to understand factors associated with bat bites among cattle, to determine whether unvaccinated cattle had evidence of rabies virus exposure and evaluate whether exposure was related to bat bite prevalence, and to assess whether cattle demonstrate adequate seroconversion to two commercial v

Isolation and molecular characterization of Fikirini rhabdovirus, a novel virus from a Kenyan bat.

Zoonotic and vector-borne pathogens have comprised a significant component of emerging human infections in recent decades, and bats are increasingly recognized as reservoirs for many of these disease agents. To identify novel pathogens associated with bats, we screened tissues of bats collected in Kenya. Virus isolates were identified by next generation sequencing of viral nucleic acid preparations from the infected cell culture supernatant and characterized. Here we report the identification of Fikirini rhabdovirus, a novel rhabdovirus isolated from a bat, Hipposideros vittatus, captured alon

Patent Angiostrongylus mackerrasae infection in a black flying fox (Pteropus alecto).

BACKGROUND: A wild adult male black flying fox (Pteropus alecto) was presented unable to fly or hang strongly. RESULTS: Necropsy and histological examination revealed a severe pneumonia, with numerous Angiostrongylus mackerrasae in the pulmonary artery. The pulmonary parenchyma contained numerous eggs and rare larvae. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of patent Angiostrongylus infection in an accidental (i.e. non-Rattus) host species. It is also the first report of A. mackerrasae infection in an accidental host (including flying foxes). Worms recovered from cases of suspected angiostrongy

Airborne transmission of lyssaviruses.

In 2002, a Scottish bat conservationist developed a rabies-like disease and subsequently died. This was caused by infection with European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2), a virus closely related to Rabies virus (RABV). The source of this infection and the means of transmission have not yet been confirmed. In this study, the hypothesis that lyssaviruses, particularly RABV and the bat variant EBLV-2, might be transmitted via the airborne route was tested. Mice were challenged via direct introduction of lyssavirus into the nasal passages. Two hours after intranasal challenge with a mouse-adapted strain

Oxytocin and vasopressin immunoreactivity within the forebrain and limbic-related areas in the mustached bat, Pteronotus parnellii.

The nonapeptides, oxytocin and arginine vasopressin, play an important role in mammalian social and reproductive behavior. Using immunocytochemical procedures, we identified oxytocin-immunoreactive neurons in the frontal and auditory cortices, limbic areas such as the medial septal nucleus, horizontal limb of the diagonal band and the amygdala. Only arginine vasopressin neurons were present in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. In limbic-related areas, the hypothalamic paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei and the nucleus centralis contained both oxytocin and arginine vasopressin neurons

Tonic efferent-induced cochlear damping in roosting and echolocating mustached bats.

The activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system in mustached bats, Pteronotus p. parnellii, was studied by monitoring changes in the mechanical properties of the cochlea. The changing properties were expressed by the decay time (DT) of cochlear microphonic potentials produced by transient-induced ringing (Henson et al., 1995). Tape-recorded roost noise (biosonar and communication sounds) produced sudden, marked decreases in DT when presented to the contralateral ear of animals adapted to the quiet. When the animals were first removed from their roosts the DT was relatively short

Salivary secretion in three species of tsetse flies (Glossinidae).

The study of the mechanism and process of salivation in tsetse flies is of paramount importance towards a fuller understanding of the transmission of trypanosomiasis and nagana diseases. Gordon, Crewe and Willett (1956) made direct observations, through a microscope, of the haustellum of G. morsitans as it penetrated into the ear of an anesthetised mouse and found that probing was accompanied by a copious but intermittent ejection of saliva from the hypopharynx. The outpouring of the saliva commenced during penetration of the stratum corneum and was maintained throughout probing of the tissues

Annotation of bat IG H/L/K loci and analysis of the characteristics of bat BCR-CDR3 repertoires.

Bats represent the second largest order of mammals and are the only flying mammals, exhibiting remarkable biological characteristics such as viral tolerance, longevity, and low tumor incidence. Although bats serve as reservoirs for numerous zoonotic viruses, they remain asymptomatic without overt infection. However, the mechanisms and effects of B-cell adaptive immune responses in bats are largely unknown. In mammals, BCR V(D)J gene recombination and the formation of the CDR3 repertoire are key mechanisms underlying B-cell diversity, specificity, and memory responses. In this study, we perform

Candida and Trichosporon species in urban bats from southeastern Brazil.

Bats may act as carriers of opportunistic fungi of medical importance, although information regarding this interaction remains limited. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence of fungi in urban and rural bats from southeastern Brazil. A total of 203 bats belonging to 13 species, originating from 17 municipalities in São Paulo State, were analyzed. Samples of spleen, liver, kidney, and intestine were subjected to PCR targeting the fungal ribosomal DNA ITS region, followed by gene sequencing. Overall, 8.37% (17/203) of the animals tested positive for yeast DNA. Candida species were

Study of retroviral restrictions in a Tadarida bat cell line enlightens specific early blocks and TRIM5 locus multiplication.

UNLABELLED: Studies on retroviral infections in bat cells have revealed lineage-dependent differences in susceptibility level, implicating the presence of retrovirus-inhibiting mechanisms in bats. However, the limited number of bat species studied has hampered the clarification of the specific underlying mechanisms. While studying the susceptibility of bat cell lines to murine leukemia virus (MLV), we identified a specific Yangochiropteran bat cell line that exhibited a primate tripartite motif-containing protein (TRIM) 5α-like MLV restriction. Here, we characterized the restrictive nature of …

REDESCRIPTION OF PARABENEDENIELLA POSTEROCOLPA (HARGIS, 1955) BRULE AND BULLARD N. GEN. ET N. COMB. (MONOGENOIDEA: CAPSALIDAE: ENTOBDELLINAE) FROM INFECTIONS ON THREE BATOID HOSTS (RHINOPTERIDAE AND MOBULIDAE) WITH PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS AND COMMENTS ABOUT CAPSALID HOST SPECIFICITY.

We herein propose Parabenedeniella Brule and Bullard n. gen. to accommodate Parabenedeniella posterocolpa n. comb., formerly of Benedeniella Johnston, 1929 (both Capsalidae: Entobdellinae). Parabenedeniella differs from all other entobdelline genera by the combination of having a U-shaped (not looped) proximal portion of the cirrus sac, a vagina that is directed posterolaterad, a tube-like proximal portion of the vagina that is approximately one-third of the total length of the vagina, a thick-walled and muscular distal portion of the vagina that is approximately two-thirds of the total length

Identification of Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma cruzi in bats captured in El Paso County, Texas.

Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma cruzi are protozoan parasites that cause leishmaniasis and Chagas disease, respectively. In the United States, autochthonous transmission cycles of both Leishmania and T. cruzi have been documented, particularly in the southern and southwestern regions. Previous studies in El Paso, Texas, have identified dogs, cats, and several sylvatic mammals as infected hosts for these pathogens; however, the role of bats has remained largely unexplored. Here, we conducted a cross-sectional, observational study of 29 wild bats, opportunistically collected from domestic and pe

Establishment of a Sandwich ELISA for Detection of Pan-Merbecoviruses.

Merbecovirus, a subgenus of Betacoronavirus, includes MERS-CoV and multiple bat-derived viruses with zoonotic potential. Given the unpredictable emergence of these viruses and their genetic diversity, development of broad-spectrum diagnostic tools is expected. In this study, we established a sandwich ELISA targeting the nucleocapsid (N) protein of merbecoviruses. We generated monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) using recombinant N protein of a bat merbecovirus, VsCoV-1, and selected cross-reactive clones for other merbecoviruses. Three mAbs showed strong reactivities with multiple merbecoviruses but

Bat Influenza M2 Shows Functions Similar to Those of Classical Influenza A Viruses.

Novel bat influenza viruses show different features in contrast to classical influenza A viruses (IAVs). The M2 of IAVs functions as an ion channel that plays an important role in virus entry, viral assembly, and release and also serves as the antiviral target. To date, whether bat influenza M2 functions as the ion channel like classical IAV M2 remains unknown. Here, we show that the bat influenza M2 amino acid at position 31 (N/S) is critical for sensitivity to antivirals targeting the ion channel such as amantadine and other tested antivirals and that the amino acids at position 37 (H/G) and

ACE2-independent sarbecovirus cell entry can be supported by TMPRSS2-related enzymes and can reduce sensitivity to antibody-mediated neutralization.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, demonstrated that zoonotic transmission of animal sarbecoviruses threatens human health but the determinants of transmission are incompletely understood. Here, we show that most spike (S) proteins of horseshoe bat and Malayan pangolin sarbecoviruses employ ACE2 for entry, with human and raccoon dog ACE2 exhibiting broad receptor activity. The insertion of a multibasic cleavage site into the S proteins increased entry into human lung cells driven by most S proteins tested, suggesting that acquisition of a multibasic cleavage site might increase infec

A bat MERS-like coronavirus circulates in pangolins and utilizes human DPP4 and host proteases for cell entry.

It is unknown whether pangolins, the most trafficked mammals, play a role in the zoonotic transmission of bat coronaviruses. We report the circulation of a novel MERS-like coronavirus in Malayan pangolins, named Manis javanica HKU4-related coronavirus (MjHKU4r-CoV). Among 86 animals, four tested positive by pan-CoV PCR, and seven tested seropositive (11 and 12.8%). Four nearly identical (99.9%) genome sequences were obtained, and one virus was isolated (MjHKU4r-CoV-1). This virus utilizes human dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (hDPP4) as a receptor and host proteases for cell infection, which is enhance

Fc-mediated pan-sarbecovirus protection after alphavirus vector vaccination.

Group 2B β-coronaviruses (sarbecoviruses) have caused regional and global epidemics in modern history. Here, we evaluate the mechanisms of cross-sarbecovirus protective immunity, currently less clear yet important for pan-sarbecovirus vaccine development, using a panel of alphavirus-vectored vaccines covering bat to human strains. While vaccination does not prevent virus replication, it protects against lethal heterologous disease outcomes in both severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and clade 2 bat sarbecovirus challenge models. The spike vaccines tested primarily elic
