Clinical features and outcomes of male patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis: A review.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease involving multiple systems, which is divided into sporadic LAM (S-LAM) and tuberous sclerosis complex-LAM, mostly affecting women who are in childbearing age stage. Data on male patients are limited and scattered. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a systematic review to investigate the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of LAM in male. METHODS: We performed a literature review by searching for all the published reported cases of LAM in male during the past 35 years (April 1986-October 2021). RESULTS: 36 male

Effect of single-port inflatable mediastinoscopy simultaneous laparoscopic-assisted radical esophagectomy on respiration and circulation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We previously developed a new surgical method, namely, single-port inflatable mediastinoscopy simultaneous laparoscopic-assisted radical esophagectomy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of carbon dioxide inflation on respiration and circulation using this approach. METHODS: From April 2018 to October 2020, 105 patients underwent this novel surgical approach. The changes in respiratory and circulatory functions were reported when the mediastinal pressure and pneumoperitoneum pressure were 10 and 12 mmHg, respectively. Data on blood loss, operative tim

Clinical characteristics and long-term outcome of lung lobe torsions in cats: a review of 10 cases (2000-2021).

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Lung lobe torsion is rare in cats. The aim of this multi-institution retrospective study was to describe clinical and diagnostic findings, treatments and outcomes of lung lobe torsion (LLT) in 10 cats. Dyspnoea and tachypnoea were the most common clinical signs. Pleural effusion was present in nine cats at presentation. Fluid analysis confirmed chylothorax in three cats. Nine cats underwent CT and five cats had thoracic radiographs taken. A diagnosis was made preoperatively in six cats, while in the other four cats it was made at exploratory thoracotomy. Affected lung lobe

Nodules and masses are associated with malignant pleural effusion in dogs and cats but many other intrathoracic CT features are poor predictors of the effusion type.

Thoracic CT may be used in the workup of patients with pleural effusion. In humans, certain pleural features on CT aid in diagnosing an underlying cause for pleural effusion, whereas this is not well studied in veterinary medicine. This retrospective cross-sectional analytical study assessed pleural and other intrathoracic abnormalities on CT in dogs and cats with pleural effusion and explored potential discriminatory features between effusion types. Eighty-nine dogs and 32 cats with pleural cytology and/or histopathology were categorized into malignant pleural disease (15 dogs and 11 cats), p

Impact of unplanned events on early postoperative results of minimally invasive esophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) is increasingly performed worldwide. Unplanned events during thoracoscopy or laparoscopy can jeopardize the procedure, sometimes necessitating conversion to open surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of unplanned events on early postoperative outcomes after MIE. METHOD: A consecutive group of 303 patients who underwent MIE between January 2011 and December 2015 were reviewed. The patients were allocated to two groups comprising those with (G-UPE, 85 patients) and without unplanned events (G-Regular, 218 patients). Unplanne

RASA1 somatic mutation and variable expressivity in capillary malformation/arteriovenous malformation (CM/AVM) syndrome.

Germline mutations in RASA1 are associated with capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation (CM-AVM) syndrome. CM-AVM syndrome is characterized by multi-focal capillary malformations and arteriovenous malformations. Lymphatic anomalies have been proposed as part of the phenotype. Intrafamilial variability has been reported, suggesting modifiers and somatic events. The objective of the study was to identify somatic RASA1 "second hits" from vascular malformations associated with CM-AVM syndrome, and describe phenotypic variability. Participants were examined and phenotyped. Genomic DNA was

Single-institution experience on robot-assisted thoracoscopic operations for mediastinal diseases.

OBJECTIVE: : After the introduction of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery 20 years ago, the minimally invasive techniques in thoracic surgery have found a growing application. The recent introduction of robotic technology has increased the potentiality of thoracoscopic technique leading to an expansion of indications and applications, particularly for the management of mediastinal diseases. We reviewed our experience in robot-assisted thoracoscopic resection of benign and malignant mediastinal diseases. METHODS: : Between 2002 and 2010, 108 patients (79 women and 29 men; median age 38 y) un

Clinical and molecular insights into lymphangioleiomyomatosis.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare disease of women that is characterized by a proliferation of abnormal smooth muscle-like cells (LAM cells), which leads to cystic lung lesions, lymphatic abnormalities, and abdominal tumors (e.g., angiomyolipomas). LAM occurs sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex, an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by hamartoma-like tumor growths. The tumor suppressor genes TSC1 and TSC2 have been implicated in the etiology of LAM, as mutations and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in TSC2 have been detected in LAM cells. TSC1 encodes hamar

MRI Assessment of Chylous and Nonchylous Effusions: Use of Multipoint Dixon Fat Quantification.

Background Diagnosis of chylous effusions normally requires invasive paracentesis. Purpose To assess whether MRI with multipoint Dixon fat quantification allows for noninvasive differentiation of chylous and nonchylous ascites and pleural effusions. Materials and Methods Phantom, ex vivo, and in vivo MRI examinations were performed by using a commercially available multipoint Dixon pulse sequence with a 1.5-T MRI system. Fat fraction values were measured with a region of interest-based approach on reconstructed maps. For phantom evaluation, eight titrated fatty fluid solutions (nonhuman sample
