Nation-Wide Viral Sequence Analysis of HIV-1 Subtype B Epidemic in 2003-2012 Revealed a Contribution of Men Who Have Sex With Men to the Transmission Cluster Formation and Growth in Japan.

Background: To better understand the epidemiology of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype B transmission in Japan, phylodynamic analysis of viral pol sequences was conducted on individuals newly diagnosed as HIV-1 seropositive. Methodology: A total of 5,018 patients newly diagnosed with HIV-1 infection and registered in the Japanese Drug Resistance HIV Surveillance Network from 2003 to 2012 were enrolled in the analysis. Using the protease-reverse transcriptase nucleotide sequences, their subtypes were determined, and phylogenetic relationships among subtype B sequences were inf

Association of demographics, HCV co-infection, HIV-1 subtypes and genetic clustering with late HIV diagnosis: a retrospective analysis from the Japanese Drug Resistance HIV-1 Surveillance Network.

INTRODUCTION: Late diagnosis of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a major concern epidemiologically, socially and for national healthcare systems. Although the association of certain demographics with late HIV diagnosis has been reported in several studies, the association of other factors, including clinical and phylogenetic factors, remains unclear. In the present study, we conducted a nationwide analysis to explore the association of demographics, clinical factors, HIV-1 subtypes/circulating recombinant form (CRFs) and genetic clustering with late HIV diagnosis in Japan, where new i

Association of Concurrent Clusters of Physical Inactivity and Unhealthy Lifestyle Habits with Common Mental Disorders among Primary Healthcare Workers: Insights from a large sample cross-sectional analysis in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders (CMDs) are highly prevalent worldwide. Leisure time physical inactivity (LTPI) is a key modifiable behavior increasingly recognized for its contribution to CMD risk, alongside tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and nonparticipation in social activities (NPSA). Despite this, most studies examine these lifestyle factors individually rather than investigating their concurrent clustering and combined impact on mental health. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between clusters of unhealthy lifestyle habits centered on LTPI and CMDs among primary healthcare wor

Incidence of self-reported tuberculosis treatment with community-wide universal testing and treatment for HIV and tuberculosis screening in Zambia and South Africa: A planned analysis of the HPTN 071 (PopART) cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV is a potent risk factor for tuberculosis (TB). Therefore, community-wide universal testing and treatment for HIV (UTT) could contribute to TB control, but evidence for this is limited. Community-wide TB screening can decrease population-level TB prevalence. Combining UTT with TB screening could therefore significantly impact TB control in sub-Saharan Africa, but to our knowledge there is no evidence for this combined approach. METHODS AND FINDINGS: HPTN 071 (PopART) was a community-randomised trial conducted between November 2013 to July 2018; 21 Zambian and South African comm

Long-term oncological outcomes following algorithm-based care versus usual care for the early recognition and management of complications after pancreatic resection: a post-hoc analysis of a nationwide, stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that severe postoperative complications after resection of pancreatic and periampullary cancer might have a negative effect on long-term oncological outcomes. The PORSCH trial showed that an algorithm for early recognition and minimally invasive management of complications after pancreatic resection significantly improved short-term clinical outcomes. The algorithm's effect on long-term survival remains to be determined. METHODS: Long-term oncological outcomes were evaluated post hoc in all patients included in the nationwide, stepped-wedge cluster-randomised PO

Integrating disease mapping and flexible scan statistics to identify and visualize spatial clusters.

Accurately characterizing the spatial distribution of diseases is essential for understanding etiology and guiding targeted public health interventions. This study develops an analytical framework integrating disease mapping and spatial scan statistics to identify and validate the spatial clustering patterns of diseases. The framework follows an "exploration-validation-refinement" workflow, combining qualitative visualization with quantitative spatial analysis. Choropleth maps intuitively depict the overall distribution of diseases, providing a basis for identifying potential high-risk areas;

How the Rise of Problematic Pornography Consumption and the COVID-19 Pandemic Has Led to a Decrease in Physical Sexual Interactions and Relationships and an Increase in Addictive Behaviors and Cluster B Personality Traits: A Meta-Analysis.

On January 13, 2018, an alert was sent to Hawaii's people that a missile was heading toward them. People were in a state of alarm for 30 minutes before the government sent out a false alarm statement. Fifteen minutes after the message that told the people of Hawaii that they were not in danger went out, Pornhub's views spiked by 48%. On March 11, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was designated a pandemic. By March 25, 2020, Pornhub's views had spiked to over 24%. We took the research available on problematic pornography consumption, also referred to as internet sex addiction, pornogra

Quantifying Plasmodium falciparum infections clustering within households to inform household-based intervention strategies for malaria control programs: An observational study and meta-analysis from 41 malaria-endemic countries.

BACKGROUND: Reactive malaria strategies are predicated on the assumption that individuals infected with malaria are clustered within households or neighbourhoods. Despite the widespread programmatic implementation of reactive strategies, little empirical evidence exists as to whether such strategies are appropriate and, if so, how they should be most effectively implemented. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We collated 2 different datasets to assess clustering of malaria infections within households: (i) demographic health survey (DHS) data, integrating household information and patent malaria infection
