Sensitivity of three serological tests: indirect immunofluorescence assay (If), complement fixation test (CF), and microagglutination test (MA) was evaluated. Sera (118 samples) of humans suspected of C. burnetii infection were tested. Phase II antibodies were detected in 68.6% of sera and phase I antibodies--in 38.2% of sera. Active histoplasmosis is rarely diagnosed in Great Britain. We present the illness records of three patients with disseminated histoplasmosis. In two patients the infection was discovered at necropsy and resulted in caseous destruction of the adrenal glands, and in one of these there was also fungal invasion of the liver and wall of the aorta. The third patient had Addison's disease and also a chronic tongue ulcer from which the fungus was cultured by biopsy. The eight other patients with disseminated histoplasmosis and the six with active localized disease previously reported in Great Britain

The aim of the study was to determine the number of congenital infections detected in Dublin with the current use of the TORCH screen. A review of all laboratory results was undertaken with subsequent review of relevant medical charts. A total of nine cases were documented in a 5-year period from January 1991 to December 1995. Six of these had already been suspected. There was a failure to follow up 47% of positive screens. TORCH screening in Ireland has an unacceptably low yield, and in the opinion of the authors should be abolished.

BACKGROUND: Primary cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a monoclonal antibody (M-protein) and complement-mediated chronic hemolytic disease process. Antibody glycosylation can play a role in both antibody half-life and complement fixation. Recently, M-protein light chain (LC) glycosylation has been shown to be associated with AL amyloidosis. We hypothesized that M-protein LC glycosylation is also associated with cold agglutinin (CA) titers and CA-mediated hemolysis.

A new serological method, the platelet aggregation (PA) test, was used to study Group B arbovirus infections, which are often associated with thrombocytopenia. The method is based on the interaction of antigen-antibody complexes with platelets. Two proteins (21 and 48 kilodaltons) purified from endospore-spherule culture filtrates of Coccidioides immitis are identified as precipitin and complement-fixing antigens, respectively. Investigations were conducted during 1985 and 1986 years on the effect of some chemicals on the parainfluenza and adenovirus circulation in an industrial enterprise community. The presence of type 1, 2 and 3 parainfluenza virus and of adenovirus was revealed by immunofluorescence in exfoliated cells collected from nasopharynx. The kinetic of specific hemagglutination inhibiting and complement fixing antibodies was followed monthly by immunological tests. Meaning of the results is discussed from an epidemiological point of view.

The objective of this study was to detect the presence of antibodies by the complement-mediated lysis test in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, before and after treatment, and to correlate them with the clinical form of the disease and with the levels of precipitin and fluorescent anti-P. brasiliensis antibodies. Thirty-three patients with alveolar echinococcosis treated by surgery or with mebendazole were observed up to six years. Of three immunoassays (IgG ELISA, complement fixation, indirect haemagglutination) correlation with the clinical course was achieved by IgG ELISA only. A new phase I Q fever skin test was administered to 74 subjects. Thirty-eight had less than 8 mm and 36 had greater than or equal to 10 mm erythema at 24 hr. Only 14 had circulating antibody. Three skin test-positive and 17 skin test-negative, seronegative individuals subsequently received 6 or 30 micrograms of vaccine in a single dose. All skin test-positive individuals and one skin test-negative individual developed mild local reactions.
