Association of cortical disinhibition with tic, ADHD, and OCD severity in Tourette syndrome.

Hyperkinetic disorders may involve excess excitatory output from thalamus to cerebral cortex. Case-control, neurophysiological studies in persons with Tourette Syndrome (TS), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) support this model. To compare the strength of association between motor cortex inhibition and tic, ADHD, and OCD severity in TS, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to measure motor cortex inhibition in 36 children and adults with TS. Current symptom severity was assessed with standard clinical rating scales and compared with n

A Multidimensional Data Set for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to Strengthen Research and Care: A Cross-Sectional Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex psychiatric condition marked by persistent obsessions and compulsions, leading to significant disability and reduced quality of life. Despite effective treatments, delays in diagnosis and fragmented data collection hinder optimal care. Current assessment tools focus primarily on symptoms and severity, lacking comprehensive data on demographics, environmental factors, and service utilization. This study aimed to develop a multidimensional minimum data set (MDS) for OCD to standardize data collection, improve clinical decision

Not all checking decreases memory confidence: Implications for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Repetitive checking, a frequently reported compulsive behavior associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), may, at least in part, result from a lack of memory confidence. Surprisingly, numerous studies have shown that when participants repeatedly perform an action and check that they performed it correctly, memory confidence decreases across repetitions, suggesting that repeated checking produces memory distrust. It is not clear, however, whether the checking component of each trial is critical for the decrease in confidence to occur. Five experiments tested

Factors associated with adolescent pregnancy- a sample of Taiwanese female adolescents.

Awareness of childhood-onset schizophrenia is rapidly increasing, with a more precise definition now available of the clinical picture and early signs, the outcome and the treatment strategies. Premorbid developmental impairments, including language, motor and social deficits, are more frequent and more pronounced in earlier- than in later-onset forms of schizophrenia. This 'pan-dysmaturation' is reported from the first months of life in more than half of the children who will develop childhood-onset schizophrenia, and it suggests a more severe and early disruption of brain development compare

Compulsive sexual behavior disorder in an inpatient sample with substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Several studies indicate that compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) shares core elements with substance use disorder (SUD). These findings support the assumption of common mechanisms in addiction, which may lead to a higher tendency in patients with SUD to have comorbid CSBD. Nevertheless, this relationship between CSBD and SUD is poorly understood to date. AIM: This study aimed to compare the prevalence of CSBD and its subtype pornography use disorder (PUD) between a SUD group and a matched control group. Herein, we aimed to test whether patients with SUD are more likely to

Psychosocial risk factors of technological addictions in a sample of Spanish University students: The influence of Emotional (Dys)Regulation, personality traits and Fear of Missing Out on internet addiction.

Perception of the need to be online can lead to the compulsive use of the Internet. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between Internet Addiction and Social Media Addiction and some psychological variables that could influence the onset of these disorders (FoMO, Emotional Dysregulation, Personality traits). The sample was composed by 598 Spanish university students aged from 18 to 35 (471 women and 118 men; average age = 21.56; standard deviation = 2.73). Participants responded to an online questionnaire regarding the use of Internet (IAT), the use of social media (BSMAS

Computerized treatment of perfectionism through mistake making: A preliminary study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Perfectionism has important implications for self-worth, personal standards, and psychopathology. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of a novel two-week, computerized, exposure-based treatment for perfectionism (ETP). METHODS: Seventy-one university students with elevated perfectionism were randomized to either the ETP group (n = 36) or the waitlist (WL) control group (n = 35). The ETP group was asked to complete the intervention at home, every three days for two weeks for a total of five treatment sessions. The tasks in the ETP condition were engineered

Medication overuse headache: a review of current evidence and management strategies.

The third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) defines medication-overuse headache (MOH) as a headache that develops when a person regularly uses acute or symptomatic headache medications excessively (10 or more, or 15 or more days per month, depending on the medication) for a period of time longer than 3 months. Even though it may not be reported as frequently as it actually is, it affects about 5% of the general population on average. It typically happens following repeated anti-pain medication use for pre-existing headache disorders, such as migraines.

The experience of orthorexia from the perspective of recovered orthorexics.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia is a proposed disorder that involves a pathological obsession with healthy eating. The condition has received much attention in popular media in recent years, but more empirical research is needed. Currently, orthorexia is an emerging construct with multiple proposed versions of diagnostic criteria, and there is confusion regarding the exact symptoms and pathology. This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of orthorexia from the perspective of recovered persons, as defined by Dunn and Bratman's 2016 criteria (Eat Behav 21:11-17, 2016). METHODS: Eight particip

Deep Brain Stimulation: Past, Present, and Future.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a revolutionary neurosurgical treatment for various movement and psychiatric disorders. Its development, rooted in advances in stereotactic surgery and early thalamotomies, led to its FDA approval for essential tremor (1997) and Parkinson's disease (2002), followed by applications in dystonia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and epilepsy. While DBS has proven effective in these domains, research continues to explore its potential for treating conditions like Alzheimer's disease, addiction, and depression. Despite its clinical success, the underl

Intolerance of uncertainty, perfectionism, and coping as predictors of depression diagnosis and severity.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting 3.8% of the global population. Despite its prevalence, less than half of those diagnosed with MDD receive treatment and remission rates remain low. Given these poor outcomes for individuals with depression and the findings of our previous study examining the role of certain psychological phenomena on the incidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the present study aims to examine whether intolerance of uncertainty, perfectionism, and coping strategies can together predict the diagnosis and severity o

Year of Zoom in a Year of Doom: Lessons Learned Delivering ERP Remotely During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and consequential shutdown measures, many mental health professionals started providing therapy to patients exclusively via telehealth. Our research center, which specializes in studying and treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), historically has provided in-person exposure and response prevention (ERP) to adults with OCD, but shifted to telehealth during the pandemic. Unlike in other modes of talk therapy, ERP's emphasis on therapist-supervised exposures presented unique opportunities and challenges to delivering treatment entirely via a virtual pla

Psychological and motivational correlates of orthorexia nervosa: the role of perfectionism, emotion regulation, and health attitudes.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexic tendencies are characterized by a rigid preoccupation with healthy eating and have been associated with eating disorder (ED) symptoms, perfectionism, and emotion regulation difficulties. However, the psychological and motivational correlates of the different dimensions of orthorexic symptomatology remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, correlational study in a community sample of 300 Italian adults (mean age = 24.3 years, SD = 4.0). Participants completed an online survey including validated self-report measures of orthorexic tendenci

Ketamine Treatment for Pediatric Refractory Obsessive: Five Open Label Cases.

Importance: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and cognitive behavioral therapy are the first-line treatments for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) populations. Due to their limited effectiveness, additional treatment options are needed. A new potential pharmacological medication treatment avenue for OCD is intravenous (IV) ketamine. Objective: This study aimed to establish the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an IV ketamine infusion for the treatment of refractory OCD in adolescents. Obsessive compulsive disorder and depression change in a residential setting with the added role of quality of life.

Co-occurring depression is a common aspect of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) presentation, however, there are mixed conclusions on how depression influences treatment outcomes. Many studies lack accounting for temporal precedence, and do not account for both within person and between-person effects. This study utilizes a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model to examine changes in OCD and depression over the course of intensive/residential treatment for OCD in a sample of 311 adults. We build on past research by including quality of life in the model as well. Autoregressive paths refle
