INTRODUCTION: There is very limited knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) transmission and prevention present amongst high-risk groups such as truck drivers in Pakistan because of lack of awareness and understanding about barrier techniques.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to collect and access the data gathered from truck drivers about symptoms of STIs, their attitude towards hazards of multiple sexual partners, homosexuality, transmission and consequences of STIs, and their perception about preventing it using condoms and other barrier methods.
METHODS: This study was…

This study describes patterns of sexual behavior and condom use in a sample of 1125 Black, White, and Alaska Native drug users. Data are self-reports of recent sexual behavior, including descriptions of (up to) the five most recent sex partners. This provided information on 1116 sex partner pairs, of which at least one partner was a drug user. Sex partner pairs involving a White man and an Alaska Native woman were frequently reported. Level of condom use within these pairs was significantly lower than within all other pairs. The implications of a potential vector of HIV transmission from White

This study is a follow-up to a previous study assessing the relationship of alcohol consumption as a disinhibitor to high-risk sexual behavior. Results are based on survey data from 1,902 students attending 12 colleges. Sexual behaviors occurring after people had "let themselves drink more than normal in order to make it easier for them to have sex with someone" were assessed. At least once in the past year, 33.2% of the men and 17.4% of the women had met this criterion. In those instances, 76.3% of the men and 77.1% of the women initiated condom use for vaginal intercourse. Results are discus

In order to identify the groups at risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), we assessed the sociodemographic profiles of men testing for STD, their sexual habits, and the results of microbiological analysis. During a three-year period, a total of 700 men older than 18 years of age completed the questionnaire regarding sociodemographic and sexual behavior. Urethral swabs were taken for microbiological analysis. Thirty-three percent of respondents reported not using condoms. Those that do not use condoms were predominantly less educated, unmarried but in steady relationships, employed, with…

Most sexual health education programmes use fear and risk of disease to try to motivate people to practise safer sex. This gives the impression that safer sex and pleasurable sex are mutually exclusive. Yet there is growing evidence that promoting pleasure alongside safer sex messaging can increase the consistent use of condoms and other forms of safer sex. To this end, the Pleasure Project created The Global Mapping of Pleasure, a document that identifies projects and organisations worldwide that put pleasure first in HIV prevention and sexual health promotion, and sexually provocative media …

Currently approved male-directed contraceptive methods include condoms and vas occlusion. Vas occlusion is very effective but is intended to be non-reversible. Condoms have a relatively high failure rate, at least partially due to compliance problems and are not accepted by many couples. The only other male-oriented methods in clinical trials utilize the administration of testosterone alone or its combination with another gonadotropin-suppressing agent such as a progestin or a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist. Studies published in the 1990s demonstrated that a testosterone-containing …

Lifetime and current health practices and risk behaviors were examined among 350 youth living with HIV (YLH) aged 14-23 years from four AIDS epicenters (72.6% male; 26.2% African American, 36.9% Latino). YLH were relatively healthy (M CD4 cells = 499), had used substantial health care and were satisfied with the care. YLH's sexual and substance-use histories indicated substantial HIV related risk acts: the median number of lifetime partners was 25 with only 8% using condoms consistently; 14.9% had injected drugs, and 61.2% had used hard drugs. Compared with females, males had more lifetime and…
