[Tolvaptan, a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist, is the world's first approved drug for treatment of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD)].

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common genetic kidney disease. Fluid-filled cysts develop and enlarge in both kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure. Tolvaptan is a selective vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist and the first and only drug approved for treatment of ADPKD. It blocks binding of arginine vasopressin (AVP) to V2 receptors in the collecting duct of kidney, thereby inducing water diuresis (aquaresis) without losing electrolytes. Therefore, tolvaptan was originally developed and approved as the first oral aquaretic agent for treatment of hyponatr

Case report illustrating evolution of an intraosseous lipoma: Radiology findings and differentials.

A 21 year old female patient presented with mild left ankle pain for 2 months. Left ankle radiograph was performed, showing a lucent lesion with narrow zone of transition at anterior body of the calcaneus. Further evaluation with MRI showed T1 hypointense and T2 hyperintense signals within said lesion, with fluid-fluid level. The working diagnosis was aneurysmal bone cyst. Follow-up MRI performed 3 years later showed predominant macroscopic fat within the lesion. This case demonstrates composition change of intraosseous lipoma over time.

Ruptured intracranial dermoid cyst.

Intradural dermoids are rare congenital tumors representing approximately 0.05% of all intracranial lesions. These benign tumors have a typical appearance on CT and MR due to their lipid components. The complication caused by rupture are the spillage of the fatty material into the cerebrospinal fluid. We report a case of a ruptured dermoid cyst showing fat/fluid levels in both side ventricles and fatty material in the subarachnoid space on CT and MR-imaging and the follow-up over four years after incomplete resection of the tumor.

Simple liver cyst complicated by fistula into abdominal wall: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Benign, fluid-filled lesions called simple liver cysts are commonly seen incidentally on imaging. While they are usually asymptomatic, they can cause complications including infection, rupture, or hemorrhage. The formation of a fistula into the abdominal wall is a rare complication, with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: In April 2024, a 29-year-old obese (body mass index 30.56) male presented to Madinat Zayed Hospital with left pneumonia, which was resolved with intravenous antibiotics. A subsequent CT scan, however, showed an 11×10×5 cm hypodense lesion i

Uric Acid Crystal Deposition Within a Ganglion Cyst: A Case Report.

Ganglion cysts are soft tissue swellings occurring most commonly in the hand or wrist. They are typically filled with gelatinous material rich in hyaluronic acid and mucopolysaccharides. Although benign, variations in cyst content can provide important insight into underlying metabolic or microenvironmental processes. To date, uric acid crystal deposition within a ganglion cyst has not been reported. This case describes a 73-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer, treated with exemestane, who presented with a painful mass on the dorsum of the left midfoot. Physical examination revealed

Solitary Neurocysticercosis Presenting with Focal Seizure and Secondary Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure.

BACKGROUND Neurocysticercosis is the most common central nervous system infection in developing countries. A wide array of clinical manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic to severe neurological symptoms, is observed in patients diagnosed with neurocysticercosis, depending on the number of lesions, cyst location, cyst stage, parasite genotype, and host immunity. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 25-year-old Burmese man who presented with focal seizure and secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Brain imaging studies revealed a 1-cm cyst, which showed rim enhancement, an eccentric scole

Autocrine IL-10 activation of the STAT3 pathway is required for pathological macrophage differentiation in polycystic kidney disease.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is characterized by slow expansion of fluid-filled cysts derived from tubules within the kidney. Cystic expansion results in injury to surrounding parenchyma and leads to inflammation, scarring and ultimately loss of renal function. Macrophages are a key element in this process, promoting cyst epithelial cell proliferation, cyst expansion and disease progression. Previously, we have shown that the microenvironment established by cystic epithelial cells can 'program' macrophages, inducing M2-like macrophage polarization that is characterized by expression of mark

Serum antigen and antibody detection in echinococcosis: application in serodiagnosis of human hydatidosis.

Diagnosis of hydatidosis is based on immunodiagnostic methods along with radiological and ultrasound examinations. The objectives of the present study were to develop a specific and simple antigen-based ELISA method for diagnosis of hydatidosis and compare it with antibody detection method. The subjects in this study included 89 patients in the following groups: surgically confirmed hydatidosis patients (35 cases), control with other parasitic diseases (29 cases), and healthy controls (25 cases). Hyperimmune serum was raised against hydatid cyst fluid in rabbits. Anti-hydatid cyst IgG was puri…

Pediatric bronchogenic cyst complicated by atypical mycobacterium infection: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchogenic cysts are lesions of congenital origin derived from the primitive foregut and are the most common primary cysts of the mediastinum. They are most frequently unilocular and contain clear fluid. Respiratory distress is the most common presentation in pediatric patients, manifested by recurring episodes of cough, stridor, wheezing and retractions. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first pediatric case of bronchogenic cyst complicated by atypical Mycobacterium infection. This case describes a 13-year-old Caucasian American female with a large cystic lesion and extensive

Giant adrenal cyst in a pregnant woman: a case report.

In this case report, a rare example of a pregnant woman with a huge adrenal cyst is reported. No other published reports were found to have an outcome like the present case. A 27-year-old primiparous patient admitted to our clinic with complaints of gaining weight, abdominal distension and dyspnea. On physical examination abdominal distension was prominent. She weighed 78 kg. At abdominal ultrasonography, there was an 11 week, single live fetus within the uterine cavity. There was also an approximately 30 x 40 cm sized cyst. The origin of the cyst could not be detected by ultrasonography and m

Silent Threat: Bilateral Giant Asymptomatic Endometriotic Cysts With Unilateral Sudden Rupture-A Case Report.

Endometriotic cysts are common, but bilateral giant endometriosis cyst with asymptomatic cases are extremely rare. Rupture is also uncommon, yet when it occurs, it can mimic appendicitis or ectopic pregnancy due to peritoneal irritation, often requiring emergency intervention. A 25-year-old woman presented with nausea, vomiting, and an enlarging abdominal lump. Ultrasonography revealed bilateral ovarian cystic masses with ground glass appearances and free subhepatic fluid. Due to worsening symptoms despite initial resuscitation, emergency exploratory laparotomy was performed. Intraoperatively,

A case report of a large Splenic epidermoid cyst treated with partial splenectomy.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Splenic epidermoid cysts are rare primary congenital cysts composed of an epithelial lining that represent a small proportion of nonparasitic splenic cysts. Despite their infrequency, there is a lack of uniform diagnostic and treatment guidelines for these cysts, emphasizing the need for further research and standardized reporting. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old female presented with left upper quadrant abdominal pain, characterized by a pressing sensation. Physical examination revealed a palpable mass in the upper left quadrant. Laboratory test results were nor

Open Repair of Intrameniscal Cysts With Fibrin Clot Augmentation.

Cysts involving the meniscus are commonly identified on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee. Most meniscal cysts are defined as parameniscal cysts created by synovial fluid extravasation through a tear in the meniscus into the adjacent soft tissues. Intrameniscal cysts are less common and do not extend to the articular surface. These cysts represent a management dilemma for the treating clinician, where established guidelines do not exist. Surgical management of intrameniscal cysts is based on initial diagnostic arthroscopy, confirming the absence of an intra-articular tear, which wou

Acute abdomen caused by an infected mesenteric cyst in the ascending colon: a case report.

Mesenteric cysts are rare intra-abdominal tumors. Mesenteric cysts are usually asymptomatic and are incidentally detected during physical or radiological examination. Although uncommon, complications such as infection, bleeding, torsion, rupture and intestinal obstruction cause an acute abdomen. Spontaneous infection is a very rare complication. We present a case of infected mesenteric cysts in the ascending colon, which caused an acute abdomen. A 26-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with acute abdominal pain. She had a painful mass in the right abdomen on physical examination. Abdom
