Physiological sleep disturbance in children with atopic dermatitis: a case control study.

It is generally acknowledged that sleep disturbance commonly complicates atopic dermatitis (AD), but the nature of this disturbance, including its physiologic aspects, has been little studied, especially in children. The results of home polysomnography (PSG) were compared for 20 school-age children with AD and sex- and age-matched healthy controls. The findings provided objective confirmation of disruption of sleep by both brief and longer awakenings associated with scratching episodes. Sleep efficiency was reduced but other sleep variables were not significantly affected. Home sleep studies o

Impairment of ocular surface epithelium barrier function in patients with atopic dermatitis.

AIMS: To assess the integrity of the ocular surface epithelium in patients with atopic dermatitis from the viewpoint of its barrier function. METHODS: 49 patients with atopic dermatitis with blepharoconjunctivitis (ABC group), 27 age matched patients with seasonal or perennial allergic conjunctivitis (AC group), and 20 volunteers with normal healthy eyes (NH group) were assigned to this study. Ocular surface epithelium barrier function was evaluated by the fluorophotometric method using a slit lamp fluorophotometer. 3 microliters of 0.5% sodium fluorescein was instilled into the conjunctival

Intraoperative observation of the vitreous base in patients with atopic dermatitis and retinal detachment.

PURPOSE: Patients with atopic dermatitis often develop tears around the vitreous base. An attempt was made to determine whether these patients had any abnormalities of the vitreous base that would lead to formation of such tears. METHODS: The medical records and intraoperative videotape recordings of 12 patients with atopic dermatitis and retinal detachment who underwent vitrectomy were reviewed. RESULTS: Tears were located at the ora serrata or in the nonpigmented epithelium of the pars plana or plicata of the ciliary body. The vitreous gel at its base was condensed like fluffy cotton in al

Treatment of atopic dermatitis: a comparison of psychological and dermatological approaches to relapse prevention.

A randomized controlled trial compared the effectiveness of 4 group treatments for atopic dermatitis, a chronic skin disorder characterized by severe itching and eczema: dermatological educational program (DE), autogenic training as a form of relaxation therapy (AT), cognitive-behavioral treatment (BT), and the combined DE and BT treatments (DEBT). BT comprised relaxation, self-control of scratching, and stress management. Group treatments were also compared with standard medical care (SMC). Assessments at 1-year follow-up showed that the psychological treatments (AT, BT, and DEBT) led to sign

Histopathological features of recalcitrant erythema of the face in adult patients with atopic dermatitis.

Recalcitrant erythema on the face of 21 adult patients with atopic dermatitis was histologically examined. All patients had been applying topical corticosteroids to the facial erythema for three years or more. The histopathology of the recalcitrant facial erythema was not homogeneous. Thus, the facial erythema was roughly classified into three categories: 1) erythema which mainly showed eczematous changes, 2) erythema which mainly showed steroid-induced rosacea-like changes, and 3) erythema which showed both eczematous changes and steroid-induced rosacea-like changes. The majority (75%) of rec

Immune reactions to Pityrosporum ovale in adult patients with atopic and seborrheic dermatitis.

Pityrosporum ovale is a lipophilic yeast commonly present in the seborrheic areas of the skin of adults. Fifty-five young adult patients with atopic dermatitis, 19 patients with seborrheic dermatitis, and 19 healthy control subjects were examined for immune reactions to P. ovale, including tests for specific IgE antibodies (prick test, histamine release), IgG antibodies and epicutaneous testing. IgE antibodies against P. ovale were found in two thirds of the patients with atopic dermatitis and were more frequent in patients with lesions predominantly in the seborrheic areas. In addition, some

[Contact urticaria with transition to protein contact dermatitis in a cook with atopic diathesis].

Protein contact dermatitis is a rare disease within the group of occupational dermatoses. However, it is of some importance to people in food handling occupations. Skin symptoms usually manifest as immediate-type reactions (type-I-reaction according to Coombs and Gell), but changes to type IV-reactions are known. This applies especially to people with atopic eczema who have contact to fish proteins. This can be derived from a case presented here and a few similar observations described in the literature.

Passage of food antigens into circulation of breast-fed infants with atopic dermatitis.

We have selected 13 babies presenting with atopic dermatitis during exclusive breast feeding. After evaluation of reaginic reaction, we detected beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) in breast milk and babies sera before and after maternal elimination diet and after maternal challenge. beta-Lactoglobulin was present only in the sera of infants ingesting breast milk containing BLG. We have seen reaginic reactions to cow's milk in seven babies. The maternal elimination diet improved eczema in 11/13 infants, maternal challenge worsened atopic dermatitis in 9/9 children. We demonstrated the transport of food a

Locoid vs betnovate lotion in the treatment of seborrhoeic and atopic dermatitis of the scalp.

In a randomised, double-blind clinical trial, the relative efficacy of Locoid scalp lotion and Betnovate scalp application was assessed in the treatment of 30 patients, 15 in each treatment group, suffering from seborrhoeic or atopic dermatitis of the scalp. Both therapies produced a statistically significant improvement and clearance of the lesions by the end of the four weeks of treatment. Slight differences were observed in favour of Betnovate with respect to global efficacy but this difference was not statistically significant. Side-effects were not spontaneously complained of by any of th

Serum immunoglobulin E concentrations and radioallergosorbent tests in children with atopic dermatitis.

Serum IgE concentrations and the presence of allergen-specific IgE were determined in a series of 23 children with atopic dermatitis. In this group 83% had significantly elevated serum levels of IgE, 91% had coexistent respiratory allergy, 70% had radioallergosorbent test (RAST) evidence of pollen hypersensitivity, and 43% gave a history and demonstrated a RAST score consistent with milk or egg hypersensitivity. In patients with eczema a significant proportion of the elevated serum IgE appears to be antigen specific.

Pediatric atopic dermatitis: biomarker advances in severity, persistence, and non-invasive monitoring.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) in children differs immunologically and in barrier characteristics from adult AD, yet current severity assessment still relies heavily on clinical scoring systems with inherent subjectivity. This review summarizes advances in biomarkers associated with disease severity and persistence, as well as non-invasive detection techniques and targeted therapies. TARC/CCL17, periostin, total IgE, and eosinophil counts show consistent utility in grading severity, whereas FLG loss-of-function mutations, VEGF, S100A8/A9, and early skin barrier indicators are promising predictors of d

Rethinking Head and Neck Atopic Dermatitis: Pathogenic Axes and Emerging Therapeutic Directions.

Head and neck atopic dermatitis represents a common and clinically challenging phenotype of atopic dermatitis, characterized by anatomical selectivity, chronicity, and variable therapeutic response. Increasing evidence indicates that head and neck atopic dermatitis is not merely a regional extension of generalized disease, but a distinct phenotype shaped by the convergence of regional barrier fragility, a lipid-rich sebaceous microenvironment, microbiome imbalance, particularly involving Malassezia species, and a mixed immune signature integrating type 2, type 17, and type 22 inflammatory path

IL-27 signaling mediates skin inflammation in experimental psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) are two prevalent inflammatory skin disorders, each characterized by distinct adaptive immune responses. However, recent evidence suggests that these diseases may share overlapping immune mechanisms, especially concerning keratinocyte function. The specific cytokines that coordinate these inflammatory pathways remain largely undefined. METHODS: The expression of IL-27 and its receptor was analyzed using data derived from GEO datasets. Imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like and MC903-induced AD-like skin inflammation models were established in wild-ty

Multi-omics analyses reveal host-microbe interactions in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis (PSO) are chronic inflammatory skin diseases that impose substantial physical and psychological burdens. Although fungal-bacterial balance is important for skin immune homeostasis, the role of the skin mycobiome and its interaction with bacterial communities and host immunity in these diseases remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To characterize alterations in the skin mycobiome and its interactions with bacterial communities and host immune responses in AD and PSO. METHODS: Adult patients with chronic AD, plaque-type PSO and healthy volunte

Molecular Markers Distinguishing Early-Stage Mycosis Fungoides From Atopic Dermatitis Skin Lesions.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, a disease characterized by malignant T cells that home to the skin. In early stages, clinical presentation is often indistinguishable from benign chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD), posing a challenge for proper diagnosis and treatment. Previous studies have established that MF is characterized by the expansion of a single T-cell clone, whereas benign skin conditions are polyclonal in nature. In this study, we aimed to use single-cell RNA sequencing data to detect distinct transc

Erianin Targets PINK1/Parkin-Mediated Mitophagy and Apoptosis to Ameliorate Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin lesions. Mitochondrial dysregulation is associated with various pathologic conditions, including inflammation in the skin. Prior research has indicated that Erianin, a naturally occurring compound derived from Dendrobium plants, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Generally, Erianin has been demonstrated to be effective in cutaneous melanoma and ulcerative colitis. However, there is limited knowledge regarding its biological components and the mechanisms by which it prevents and treats AD. To investigate the protective effects of

Crusted scabies following tralokinumab and systemic corticosteroid treatment for presumed atopic dermatitis.

Crusted scabies is a rare parasitic hyperinfestation, commonly associated with impaired host immunity. Dysregulation of T cell homeostasis has been reported to drive disease progression. We characterized a profoundly imbalanced T cell phenotype in an immunocompetent male with crusted scabies, potentially induced by prior tralokinumab and corticosteroid treatment for presumed atopic dermatitis.
