Scalpdex: a quality-of-life instrument for scalp dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a scalp dermatitis-specific quality-of-life instrument. METHODS: Based on the results of directed focus sessions with 8 patients with scalp psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, we conceptualized 3 major constructs that explain the way scalp dermatoses affect patient quality of life: symptoms, functioning, and emotions. We constructed a 23-item instrument, Scalpdex, and tested its reliability, responsiveness, and validity. RESULTS: Fifty-two dermatology patients completed the study. We demonstrated construct validity by confirming that the factors derived by principal axe

Tracking Mycoviruses in Public RNAseq Datasets of Malassezia: Three Original Totiviruses Revealed.

Mycoviruses are viruses that selectively infect and multiply in fungal cells. Malassezia is the most abundant fungus on human skin and is associated with a variety of conditions, including atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis, dandruff, folliculitis, pityriasis versicolor, and seborrheic dermatitis. Here, we conducted mycovirome studies on 194 public transcriptomes of Malassezia (2,568,212,042 paired-end reads) screened against all available viral proteins. Transcriptomic data were assembled de novo resulting in 1,170,715 contigs and 2,995,306 open reading frames (ORFs) that were subsequently trac

Antagonistic Activity of Antimicrobial Metabolites Produced from Seaweed-Associated Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 Against Malassezia spp.

Members of the genus Malassezia are known to be opportunistic pathogens responsible for causing skin disorders such as seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff, pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. Due to the side effects caused by prolonged use of current topical antifungal agents, development of an alternative treatment is necessary. Fermentative production of antimicrobial metabolites from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 10456 was carried out, and their antagonistic activity against Malassezia furfur and Malassezia globosa was evaluated. The antifungal metabolites

Chemical organization of the cell wall polysaccharide core of Malassezia restricta.

Malassezia species are ubiquitous residents of human skin and are associated with several diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, tinea versicolor, folliculitis, atopic dermatitis, and scalp conditions such as dandruff. Host-Malassezia interactions and mechanisms to evade local immune responses remain largely unknown. Malassezia restricta is one of the most predominant yeasts of the healthy human skin, its cell wall has been investigated in this paper. Polysaccharides in the M. restricta cell wall are almost exclusively alkali-insoluble, showing that they play an essential role in the organiza

Inborn errors of biotin metabolism. Clinical and laboratory features of eight cases.

There are two genetically determined biotin-dependent disorders. The first is holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS) deficiency and the second biotinidase deficiency. HCS catalyzes the reaction in which active holocarboxylases are synthesized from inactive apocarboxylases. Biotin is required for this synthesis. Biotinidase facilitates the release and recycling of free biotin. Deficiency of either HCS or biotinidase is characterized by certain neurological, cutaneous and biochemical abnormalities. In this paper, six patients with biotinidase and two patients with HCS deficiency are described. Among t

Contact sensitivity to Pityrosporum ovale in patients with atopic dermatitis.

Contact sensitivity and immediate hypersensitivity to extracts from Pityrosporum ovale were studied in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). In a chamber-scarification patch test, 75 (64%) of 118 patients with AD responded positively, compared with 1 (3%) of 35 healthy volunteers. However, no significant statistical correlations were found between contact sensitivity to P ovale in patients with AD and any of the following factors: age, sex, distribution of skin lesions, presence of pruriginous papules, history of infantile seborrheic dermatitis, or concomitance of other atopic diseases. Lympho

Enhancing the Accuracy of Skin Lesion Diagnosis Using Hyperspectral Imaging and Deep Learning.

This study presents a novel diagnostic approach that integrates hyperspectral imaging (HSI) with deep learning to discriminate among dermatitis, actinic keratosis (AK), and seborrheic keratosis (SK). We evaluated 60 intraoperative clinical specimens and achieved 93% accuracy, 91% sensitivity, and 95% specificity in three-class classification. A Savitzky-Golay filter was applied to the raw spectra to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and data fidelity, while first-derivative spectral analysis enabled the model to capture subtle biochemical and morphological differences among lesions. Our result

Tinea capitis in adults.

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is caused by dermatophyte fungi that utilize keratin as a nutrient source.  Scalp erythema, scaling, andcrusting are typical signs of this disease.  Although most commonly seen in prepubescent children, tinea capitis can occur in adults. RESULTS: Endothrix tinea capitis owing to Trichophyton tonsurans commonly produces generalized scaling and localized perifollicular inflammation reminiscent of lichen planopilaris. Ectothrix tinea capitis owing to Microsporum sp. produces well- demarcated erythematous plaques suggestive of psoriasis. H&E stained biopsy specimens,

Prevalence of scalp disorders and hair loss in children.

Hair loss in children can have psychologic effects that interfere with a child's growth and development. In our case series, we evaluated 1003 children aged 0 months to 17 years who presented to the pediatric and dermatology outpatient clinics at Fatih University, Ankara, Turkey, from December 2009 through October 2010. The patients were routinely examined for scalp disorders and hair loss. We documented 69 patients with scalp disorders and hair loss, most commonly seborrheic dermatitis (SD), transient neonatal hair loss (TNHL), alopecia areata (AA), temporal triangular alopecia (TTA), and pit

Investigating the Gut Microbiota-Inflammatory Cytokine-Skin Axis in Inflammatory Skin Diseases: Evidence from Mendelian Randomization.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported causal associations between gut microbiota and inflammatory skin diseases; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Inflammatory cytokines may mediate the gut-skin axis. This study aimed to investigate the mediating roles of inflammatory cytokines in the associations between gut microbiota and inflammatory skin diseases. METHODS: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for 473 gut microbiota taxa, 91 inflammatory cytokines, and 11 inflammatory skin diseases were analyzed. Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed using

Epidemiology of Frequently Occurring Skin Diseases in Italian Children from 2006 to 2012: A Retrospective, Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent estimates indicate an increase in the prevalence of skin diseases in children. Few large epidemiologic studies have examined prevalence trends in Europe. This study evaluated the incidence and prevalence of frequently occurring pediatric skin diseases (PSDs) in Italy as seen by family pediatricians (FPs). METHODS: Data were retrospectively extracted from the Pedianet database (2006-2012) in children ages 0 to 14 years presenting with a skin disease at their FP. The incidence and prevalence estimates were calculated per year and stratified according to sex, age, and geograph

[Erdheim-Chester disease associated with Langerhans cell histiocytosis: A case of a mixed form].

INTRODUCTION: Langerhans cell histiocytosis and Erdheim-Chester disease are rare inflammatory myeloid neoplasms. They present characteristic clinical, histological and radiological signs. Their association is exceptional. We report a new observation. OBSERVATION: A 47-year-old man presented with lesions of seborrheic dermatitis-like, intracranial hypertension, paralysis of the sixth cranial nerve, and central diabetes insipidus. The skin biopsy concluded that there was Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The bone scan showed metaphyseal-diaphyseal osteosclerotic lesions of the femur, tibia and hum

[Translated aticle] Topical and Oral Roflumilast in Dermatology: A Narrative Review.

Oral roflumilast is a phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor approved for the prevention of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis. In dermatology, topical roflumilast is authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of plaque psoriasis and mild to moderate seborrheic dermatitis. Several studies have described the off-label use of roflumilast in dermatology, including a randomized controlled trial showing its usefulness in the treatment of psoriasis; case reports and small series have also reported successful outcomes in hidradenitis suppurat

Phenols from Origanum dictamnus L. and Thymus vulgaris L. and their activity against Malassezia globosa carbonic anhydrase.

Malassezia spp. are lipophilic fungi that are part of the normal flora of the human skin and are the etiological agents of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. β-Carbonic Anhydrases (CAs; EC 4.2.1.1) expressed from the pathogenic fungi are an alternative/complementary drug target. Previous work by our groups demonstrated that flavonoids and depsides can effectively inhibit Malassezia globosa β-CA (MgCA). In continuation of this study herein we report the inhibitory activity of a variety of phenols from Origanum dictamnus L. and Thymus vulgaris L. against β-MgCA, among them I4-II7-di-carvacrol,

Tinea versicolor in dark-skinned individuals.

In this article, we review the salient features of tinea versicolor and describe the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and histopathology of this mycosis in dark-skinned individuals. Tinea versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of the Malassezia genus. It manifests clinically as asymptomatic hypopigmented macules, hyperpigmented macules, or a combination of the two. Under light microscopy, Malassezia presents as a dimorphic fungus - in both the hyphal and yeast form. Most clinicians have found that the majority of dark-skinned patients present solely with hypopigmented lesions. Under light m
