Prophylaxis of thrombosis during and after surgery reduces the incidence of deep vein thrombosis and lung embolism in patients at risk. The kind of therapy applied is related to the individual risk of each patient. Antithrombotic stockings together with low-dose heparin or dextran, is recommended in low-risk patients. Alternatively intermittent pneumatic compression can be applied in these patients. Every intensive care patient is a potential organ donor. For preserving organs, an aggressive shock therapy and controlled volume adaptation using the alpha-blocker hydergine is necessary. Minimal therapy is not allowed until it is decided whether the patient will survive or will become an organ donor. A vasopressor therapy for normalisation of blood pressure must not be carried out. Renal function (30 ml per hour are sufficient) must be achieved by improving perfusion with alternating infusions of dextran or hydroxyethyl starch and Ringer solution. Dopamine should not be used. The effect of fractionated total lymphoid irradiation (TLI) on the maturation of B cells was examined in mice. At various times after irradiation of the mice, their spleen cells were tested for the mitogenic responses to dextran sulfate and lipopolysaccharide.
