Suicide attempts among veterans seeking treatment for pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: There is little information in the scientific literature regarding the suicide attempts of pathological gamblers, even though studies of problem gamblers have found that completed suicide, suicide attempts, and suicidal ideation are common outcomes related to gambling behavior. There has been no attempt in previous studies to identify the contributions of comorbid conditions, such as substance abuse, to the suicide attempts of pathological gamblers. METHOD: A retrospective chart review was completed for all consecutive admissions (N = 114) to the Gambling Treatment Program of the

Study of impulse-control disorders among alcohol-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND: Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) include intermittent explosive disorder, kleptomania, trichotillomania, pyromania, and pathological gambling. Several studies have suggested that the incidence of pathological gambling is substantially higher in alcoholics than in the general population. The rate of co-occurrence of other ICDs and alcohol dependence has never been systematically investigated. In our study, we assessed the frequency of all ICDs in a population of alcohol-dependent patients. We also examined the possibility that the presence of an ICD can correspond to earlier onset a

Pathological gambling. A psychobiological study.

We investigated psychobiological substrates of pathological gambling by measuring levels of norepinephrine, monoamine metabolites, and peptides in cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, and urine. Pathological gamblers had a significantly higher centrally produced fraction of cerebrospinal fluid levels of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol as well as significantly greater urinary outputs of norepinephrine than controls. These results suggest that pathological gamblers may have a functional disturbance of the noradrenergic system. This system has been postulated to underlie sensation-seeking behaviors, aspe

Adjustment to college in students with ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: To examine college adjustment in students reporting an ADHD diagnosis and the effect of medication treatment on students' adjustment. METHOD: 1,648 first-semester freshmen attending a public and a private university completed a Web-based survey to examine their adjustment to college. RESULTS: Compared with 200 randomly selected control students, 68 students with ADHD reported more academic concerns and depressive symptoms. This was explained by higher rates of inattentive symptoms among students with ADHD and was unrelated to hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. Among students with ADH

Dopamine D3 receptor Ser9Gly variant is associated with impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease patients.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (ICD) are reported to occur at variable frequencies in different ethnic groups. Genetic vulnerability is suspected to underlie the individual risk for ICD. We investigated whether the allelic variants of dopamine (DRD3), glutamate (GRIN2B) and serotonin (HTR2A) receptors are linked to ICD in Indian Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, case-control study which included PD patients (70 with ICD, 100 without ICD categorized after direct psychiatric interview of patient and caregiver) and 285 healthy controls. Single nucle

Externalizing behavior and the higher order factors of the Big Five.

The comorbidity of various externalizing behaviors stems from a broad predisposition that is strongly genetically determined (R. F. Krueger, B. M. Hicks, C. J. Patrick, S. R. Carlson, W. G. Iacono, & M. McGue, 2002). This finding raises the question of how externalizing behavior is related to broad personality traits that have been identified in normal populations and that also have a genetic component. Using structural equation modeling, the authors applied a hierarchical personality model based on the Big Five and their two higher order factors, Stability (Neuroticism reversed, Agreeableness

Prevalence and construct validity of compulsive buying disorder in shopping mall visitors.

Compulsive buying is a relatively new psychopathological concept and very few data are currently available regarding the prevalence and validity of compulsive buying disorder. In this cross-sectional study, we establish the prevalence of compulsive buying disorder in shopping mall visitors and explore the construct validity of the concept using the revised version of the Edwards Compulsive Buying Scale in 1441 shopping mall visitors looking at shopping habits, current substance use (smoking, alcohol and illicit drug) and various psychological characteristics. Overall, 8.7% (95% CI: 7.3-10.3) o

Exploring the use of seclusion and restraint with deaf psychiatric patients: comparisons with hearing patients.

Archival data of seclusion and restraint events in a group of deaf adults (n = 30) was compared with a random sample of hearing adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) (n = 30) and a random sample of hearing adults without ID (n = 51) admitted to a state hospital from 1998 to 2008. Only 12% of the hearing non-ID group experienced a seclusion or restraint versus 43% of the deaf group. The ID group also showed significantly higher rates of seclusion and restraint than the hearing non-ID group (30 vs. 12%). Patients in the deaf and ID group were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with i

Effect of genes, environment, and lifetime co-occurring disorders on health-related quality of life in problem and pathological gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Problem and pathological gambling are associated with many impairments in quality of life, including financial, family, legal, and social problems. Gambling disorders commonly co-occur with other psychiatric disorders, such as alcoholism and depression. Although these consequences and correlates have been reported, little is known about the health-related functional impairment associated with gambling. OBJECTIVE: To model differences in the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among non-problem gamblers, problem gamblers, and pathological gamblers after controlling for lifetime

Alpha 2A adrenergic receptor gene and suicide.

Suicide is a complex trait resulting from the interaction of several predisposing factors, among which genes seem to play an important role. Alterations in the noradrenergic system have been observed in postmortem brain studies of suicide victims when compared to controls. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that genetic variants of the alpha(2A) adrenergic receptor gene are implicated in suicide and/or have a modulatory effect on personality traits that are believed to mediate suicidal behavior. We studied a sample of suicides (N=110) and control subjects (N=130) for genetic

Fluvoxamine in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder and related conditions.

The mainstay of the pharmacologic treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a 10- to 12-week trial of a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) at an adequate dose. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have established the anti-obsessive-compulsive (OC) efficacy of five different SRIs. One of the most thoroughly studied of these SRIs is fluvoxamine, the focus of this article. Fluvoxamine's pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic properties, its efficacy, and guidelines for its clinical use in OCD and related disorders are briefly reviewed. Potential drug-drug interactions are discusse

Gambling related cognitions mediate the association between thinking style and problem gambling severity.

This study examined the associations among thinking style (rational versus experiential), gambling related cognitions, and problem gambling severity. The participants were 70 female and 41 male regular gamblers who completed the Gambling Related Cognitions Scale (Raylu and Oei, Addiction 99:757-769, 2004), the Rational-Experiential Inventory (Pacini and Epstien, J Pers Soc Psychol 76(6):972-987, 1999), and the Problem Gambling Severity Index (Ferris and Wynne, The Canadian problem and gambling index: final report. Self-regulatory failure and intimate partner violence perpetration.

Five studies tested the hypothesis that self-regulatory failure is an important predictor of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration. Study 1 participants were far more likely to experience a violent impulse during conflictual interaction with their romantic partner than they were to enact a violent behavior, suggesting that self-regulatory processes help individuals refrain from perpetrating IPV when they experience a violent impulse. Study 2 participants high in dispositional self-control were less likely to perpetrate IPV, in both cross-sectional and residualized-lagged analyses, than

Intermittent explosive disorder in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement.

CONTEXT: Epidemiologic studies of adults show that DSM-IV intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a highly prevalent and seriously impairing disorder. Although retrospective reports in these studies suggest that IED typically begins in childhood, no previous epidemiologic research has directly examined the prevalence or correlates of IED among youth. OBJECTIVE: To present epidemiologic data on the prevalence and correlates of IED among US adolescents in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement. DESIGN: United States survey of adolescent (age, 13-17 years) DSM-IV anx

Treatment of previously undiagnosed psychiatric disorders in persons with developmental disabilities decreased or eliminated self-injurious behavior.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is one of the most common challenging behaviors in persons with autistic disorder or severe/profound mental retardation. Many psychotropic drugs have been evaluated for their effectiveness in SIB. Results have varied, and no one psychotropic drug has been indicated for SIB. In this prospective, open clinical study, psychotropic drugs were used to treat the previously undiagnosed psychiatric disorder in persons exhibiting SIB. METHOD: Data were collected from 26 individuals with mental retardation (14 males, 12 females), 7 to 45 years of age (mean = 30
