Regulating the photophysical properties of ESIPT-based fluorescent probes by functional group substitution: a DFT/TDDFT study.

CONTEXT: In recent years, fluorescent probe technology has received more and more attention. However, the photophysical and photochemical properties of probe molecules still need to be further explored. This paper presents the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and photophysical properties of the probe molecule 4-bromo-2-((E)-((Z)-((5-bromo-1H-indol-2-yl) methylene) hydrazono) methyl) phenol (BHPL) and its four derivatives (BHPL2, BHPL3, BHPL4, and BHPL5). Infrared spectra and geometric structure analyses revealed that introducing the -NH2 group on the benzene ring

Molecular dynamics simulations of small halogenated organics at the air-water interface: implications in water treatment and atmospheric chemistry.

Free energy profiles associated with transfer of chlorinated and brominated halomethane molecules from the gas phase across the water-vapor interface to the aqueous phase were calculated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. The investigated species include chloromethane (CH3Cl), bromomethane (CH3Br), dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), dibromomethane (CH2Br2), chloroform (CHCl3), and bromoform (CHBr3). The employed halomethane force field was tuned by scaling up the atomic charges to reproduce the experimental hydration free energies. The computed free energy profiles have a minimum at the wa

Motion of the body centre of gravity as a summary indicator of the mechanics of human pathological gait.

Abnormal movements of the body segments due to lowest level gait disorders such as musculoskeletal disorders, peripheral neuropathies and radiculopathies or middle-level disorders such as hemiplegia, paraplegia and dystonia influence the motion of the centre of gravity (CG) during walking. The translation of the CG can be studied by the work done by muscles (WExt) with respect to the ground. The efficacy of gait's mechanism can be quantified by the energy transferred between gravitational potential and kinetic energies (recovery). WExt and recovery were investigated in lowest and middle-level …

Direct Effects of Ionizing Radiation on Macromolecules.

In the dry or frozen states, macromolecules are damaged directly by interactions with ionizing radiation. Since γ-rays and high-energy electrons randomly ionize orbital electrons in their path, larger molecules are more likely to suffer an interaction with these radiations. In each interaction, energy is transferred to the struck molecule, resulting in irreversibly broken covalent bonds. There is an extensive literature describing these radiation modifications in both synthetic and biopolymers. Although many different properties are measured, there emerges a similar picture of the nature of ra

Qualitative and semi-quantitative primary and secondary transfer of metal traces by human touch detected using SEM-EDS technique: A pilot study.

The present pilot study aimed to assess the transfer of metal residues on fingertips after contact with different items (primary transfer) as well as the transfer of metal residues by human fingertips from metal objects to different surfaces (secondary transfer). In the first part of the experiment, one volunteer touched 10 metal items with different characteristics and, after each touching, a single fingermark was collected using a stub. In the second part, a volunteer touched each of the objects and then another surface (glass, plastic, or the skin of a second volunteer). After each touching

Development of a Method for Transferring Paraplegic Patients with Advanced Cancer from Bed to Wheelchair.

BACKGROUND: For patients with traumatic paraplegia, the ability to push up is a prerequisite for basic movements, including the transfer from bed to wheelchair. However, this movement may be contraindicated in patients with advanced cancer with bone metastases because of the risk of pain and pathologic fractures and muscle weakness resulting from cancer cachexia and disuse syndrome. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a method for transferring paraplegic patients from bed to wheelchair taking into consideration the unique characteristics of patients with advanced cancer with b

Effect of carbon dioxide on the temperature dependence of anion exchange in human red cells.

Anion exchange across the red cell membrane was studied by measuring the rate of shrinkage of cells when transferred from a medium of low pH to one of higher pH. Removal of trace amounts of CO2/bicarbonate from the media by degassing and the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase with 5 microM ethoxzolamide slowed the shrinkage rate. Arrhenius plots were linear over a temperature range of 40 degrees C, both in the presence of trace amounts of CO2/bicarbonate and in their absence, and gave an apparent activation energy for Cl- exchange of 73.9 +/- 8.9 kJ mole-1 when CO2 was present but this increased

Probing the interactions between cations and borazine analogue complexes.

CONTEXT: The bond nature of X+  - E13 upon X+  - E13 = NL2 (X = H, Li, Na, K, Al, Cu, Ag, E13 = B, Al, Ga, In, and L = H, F, OH, CH3, SiH3) complexation was investigated theoretically. The well characterized covalency order of these cations H+  > Cu+  > Ag+  > Al+  > Li+  > Na+  > K+ was used as a criterion to estimate the characteristics of X+ - E13 binding. The topological analysis is valid for all the X+ - E13 = NL2, except X+ - Al = NL2. localized orbital locator study reveals that this is due to the non-uniform distribution of electron density and longer distance between X+ - Al. Orbital

AI-guided framework for the design of materials and devices for magnetic-tunnel-junction-based true random number generators.

Emerging devices, such as magnetic tunnel junctions, are key for energy-efficient, performant future computing systems. However, designing devices with the desirable specification and performance for these applications is often found to be time-consuming and non-trivial. Here, we investigate the design and optimization of spin-orbit torque and spin transfer torque magnetic tunnel junction models as the probabilistic devices for true random number generation. We leverage reinforcement learning and evolutionary optimization to vary key device and material properties of the various device models

The Electrochemical Stability of Starch Carbon as an Important Property in the Construction of a Lithium-Ion Cell.

This paper shows use of starch-based carbon (CSC) and graphene as the anode electrode for lithium-ion cell. To describe electrochemical stability of the half-cell system and kinetic parameters of charging process in different temperatures, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement was adopted. It has been shown that smaller resistances are observed for CSC. Additionally, Bode plots show high electrochemical stability at higher temperatures. The activation energy for the SEI (solid-electrolyte interface) layer, charge transfer, and electrolyte were in the ranges of 24.06-25.33, 6

Intercellular Mitochondrial Transfer as Endogenous Neuroprotection: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Implications in Ischemic Stroke.

Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Current reperfusion therapies are limited by narrow therapeutic time windows and the risk of secondary reperfusion injury, underscoring the urgent need for novel translatable neuroprotective targets. Mitochondrial dysfunction serves as a central hub in the ischemic cascade, contributing to energy failure, oxidative stress, calcium dysregulation, and various forms of programmed cell death. Recently, intercellular mitochondrial transfer has emerged as a crucial form of metabolic communication within the neurovascular

Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer in Reaction of Catecholamines: Experimental and Computational Approach.

Biogenic catecholamines (dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline) exhibit a dual role in biological systems, acting as both endogenous antioxidants and potential sources of oxidative stress. The core of their antiradical activity is the catechol moiety that enables efficient radical scavenging via hydrogen and/or electron transfer. In this study, the reactivity of catecholamines toward the DPPH• radical was investigated experimentally and computationally in predominantly nonpolar 1,4-dioxane-water media. Experimental rate constants, kinetic isotope effects, and thermodynamic activation parameters

Dynamic H-Bonding Mediates Stimuli-Responsive Chiral Induction in Porous Aromatic Cages with Multicolor Chiral Afterglow.

The origin of biological chirality remains a fundamental scientific mystery. Developing artificial systems with on-off responsive chiral induction and transfer, and elucidating their mechanisms, is of paramount importance. Here, we report the first pair of chiral porous organic cage (R/S-BA-PAC) exhibiting unprecedented chiral afterglow in a film state, boosting a remarkable lifetime of 1.2 s and a dissymmetry factor (glum) of 0.001. Loading rhodamine B (RB) guest molecules enables multicolor afterglow ranging from green to red, achieving 88% energy transfer. Notably, the confined RB displays …

Electroactive Microbiomes: Electron Transfer Mechanisms and Environmental Biotechnology Applications.

Electroactive microbiomes are mixed microbial communities in which one or more members exchange electrons with extracellular minerals, redox-active compounds, electrodes, or partner organisms and in which community interactions materially influence net electron flow. This review develops a mechanism-interface-function-readiness framework that connects extracellular electron transfer (EET) with biofilm ecology, microbiome-electrode organisation, environmental process performance, and translational maturity. Direct transfer through multiheme cytochromes and conductive structures, mediated transf

Bio-driven Fe bond restructuring in bio-iron systems enhances electron transfer for chain elongation.

The bio-iron system effectively overcomes the bottleneck in the biosynthesis of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) by enhancing extracellular electron transfer capability. However, the key structural characteristics and dynamic evolution of iron-based electron shuttles remain unclear, limiting system optimization and mechanistic understanding. Among the tested iron species in this study, Fe3O4 exhibited the most favorable extracellular electron transfer performance and MCFAs production, highlighting its potential as an efficient electron shuttle. In addition, this study revealed that microorgani

Transition Metal Chalcogenides/Nonconjugated Polymer Artificial Photosystems for Photoredox Catalysis.

Surface charge transfer doping (SCTD) has been established as an efficient strategy to achieve strong electronic coupling interactions between semiconductors and dopants, which lead to highly efficient electron transport over semiconductors. Herein, we report a facile, easily accessible, and effective SCTD strategy to exquisitely modulate the interfacial charge transfer over transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs: CdS, Zn0.5Cd0.5S, CdIn2S4, and ZnIn2S4) through surface modification with a nonconjugated polymer, poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA).
