[Intestinal amebiasis in children. I. Etiological study of colonic lesions of the rectosigmoid colon].

A total of 253 children from two months to 12 years old, who had diarrheic or dysenteric syndromes, were studied from the rectosigmoidoscopic and parasitologic points of view. In addition, 112 and 20 of these patients were also studied bacteriologically and virologically, respectively. Only in 28 patients torphozoites of Entamoeba histolytica were found by means of direct microscopic examination, staining techniques and amoebal cultures. Enteropathogenic bacteria were isolated in 41 of the 112 cases examined. No viral particles were detected in the 20 cases studied. From the discussion of thes…

Clinical Trial Of Tinidazole (Fasigyn) In Acute And Chronic Intestinal Amoebiasis.

Tinidazole (Fasigyn), a new drug which is active in vitro and in vivo against Entamoeba histolytica, was used in 30 Korean patients with acute and chronic intestinal amoebiasis. In aute amoebic dysentry eight of ten patients given tinidazole 150 mg q.i.d. for 10 days were cured clinically and parasitologically. In chronic intestinal amoebiasis, the parasitological cure was obtained 6 out of 10 patients given150 mg q.i.d. for 10 days and 8 out of 10 in patients given 300 mg q.i.d. for 7 days. Tinidazole is well tolerated and is free from serious toxicity. There was no significant alteration in …

Differential coping strategies exerted by biofilm and planktonic cells of Bacillus subtilis in response to a protozoan predator.

UNLABELLED: The human protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica causes amebiasis and interacts with both beneficial and harmful members of the microbiome. In previous studies, it was shown that E. histolytica can break down pre-established biofilms of Bacillus subtilis in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Inhibiting parasitic cysteine proteases impairs biofilm degradation. However, it is still unknown whether bacteria can sense this process and respond to the degradation of the biofilms. Here, our research demonstrates a multilayered response of probiotic bacteria to the parasite, which differ…

Intestinal protozoan infections among children 0-168 months with diarrhea in Mozambique: June 2014 - January 2018.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasites such as Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica can cause severe diarrhea, especially among children in developing countries. This study aims to determine the frequency of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica in children with diarrhea and identify risk factors for infection. Ameboma, a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in bariatric surgery patients: a case report.

Ameboma is a rare complication of invasive amebiases caused by the intestinal protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. The disease is characterized by tumorous, exophytic, inflammatory masses in the lower-right quadrant of the abdomen. Symptoms are nonspecific but may include intestinal obstruction and gastrointestinal bleeding. Although computed tomography and ultrasound can identify colonic masses, biopsy is the most accurate diagnostic method for ameboma. Differential diagnosis includes Crohn's disease and colon carcinoma. Treatment involves killing the trophozoites in most cases and surgical inter…

[Amebic meningoencephalitis].

It has been reported that amebic meningoencephalitis is caused by some rhizopods, which are taxonomically different from Entamoeba histolytica which is well known as the causative agent of amebic dysentery. Different types of human meningoencephalitis have been reported to be caused by amphizoic amebae, which are not obligatorily parasitic (endozoic) but are usually free-living (exozoic) in nature, i.e., in environmental water and soil: Naegleria fowleri causes acute primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Acanthamoeba spp. and Balamuthia mandrillaris produce chronic and opportunistic granul…

[Prevalence of infection by intestinal parasites in north Lebanon: 1997-2001].

We determined the prevalence of intestinal parasites in the north of Lebanon between 1997 and 2001. We analysed the parasitology records of 17126 patients and evidence of parasitic infections was found in 5 713 (33.35%) cases. There was no significant difference in prevalence for males or females for any of the parasites. The most prevalent parasites were Entamoeba coli (38.45%), Ascaris lumbricoides (37.14%), Giardia lamblia (15.39%), Ent. histolytica (4.57%) and Taenia sp. (3.3%). A comparison between our data and results of previous studies in Lebanon in 1937, 1939, 1956, 1967 and 1993 show…

Pathogenesis of amebiasis.

It is an exciting time in the study of Entamoeba histolytica. Over the past two years, the natural history and burden of disease in humans has been redefined, mucosal immune responses associated with protection identified, and the developmental regulation of encystation outlined. The number of genes sequenced has increased from a few hundred to a few thousand, and study of the genome structure is revealing unusual repetitive elements and plasticity. DNA microarrays promise the first ability to examine global patterns of mRNA abundance. The mechanism of transcriptional control via histone modif…

Progress towards an amebiasis vaccine.

Amebiasis (infection by Entamoeba histolytica) remains a major health problem in much of the developing world. Morbidity and mortality from amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess have persisted despite the availability of effective anti-amebic therapy, suggesting a need for alternative measures of disease control. Through the application of recombinant DNA technology, several E. histolytica antigens have now been expressed in prokaryotic systems and tested in animal models as vaccines to prevent invasive amebiasis. In this review, Sam Stanley Jr discusses why a vaccine for amebiasis may be …

Protection against amebic liver abscess formation in the severe combined immunodeficient mouse by human anti-amebic antibodies.

We have used serum from patients with amebic liver abscess to investigate the role of antibody in the prevention of invasive amebiasis using the severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mouse model of Entamoeba histolytica infection. The SCID mice were passively immunized with serum or purified antibody from patients with amebic liver abscess 24 hr prior to the direct intrahepatic challenge with 10(6) virulent E. histolytica trophozoites. This treatment reduced the mean abscess size in these animals from 24.5% to 3.5% (P < 0.0001). These results demonstrate that human anti-amebic antibodies are …
