Urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse are common stigmatizing conditions that afflict women far more often than they afflict men. It has been suggested that childbirth is the most likely factor to explain this great epidemiologic discrepancy between the sexes. Because the widespread availability of high-quality obstetric care through-out the industrialized world has led to precipitous drops in maternal mortality during the 20th century, many of the pathophysiologic mechanisms by which such injuries might arise are not as obvious as they were in times past. It is s…

Seventeen selected patients (mean age, 74 years)--14 with rectal prolapse and 3 with persisting anal incontinence after previous operations--underwent high anal encirclement with polypropylene mesh. There was no operative mortality. Prolapse recurred in 2 (15 percent) of the 13 patients followed up for 6 months or more (mean, 3.5 years). Three (27 percent) of the 11 patients with associated anal incontinence improved functionally, as did the three operated on for persisting incontinence, but only one patient regained normal continence. No breakage, cutting out, or infection related to the mesh

UNLABELLED: Damage to the sphincter, regardless of its pathogenesis, consists in the impossibility to control the physiology, or the so-called faecal incontinence. This implies changes in the whole bio-psycho-social functioning of the patients, and thus affects the satisfaction with their quality of life, conditioned by their health status. The problem affects around 5 to 7% of the population. Often enough, the only hope for those patients are repair procedures of the sphincter mechanism. The aim of the study was to evaluate key aspects of quality of life which determine the psycho-social stat

BACKGROUND: Sphincterotomy is used to treat chronic anal fissure, but the length of the sphincterotomy is associated with incontinence.
OBJECTIVE: We used 3-dimensional anal ultrasonography to determine the proportion of the internal anal sphincter that may be divided during lateral internal sphincterotomy in women without predisposing them to a high risk of fecal incontinence.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a prospective, observational cohort study conducted at a tertiary-care hospital.
PATIENTS: Women treated for chronic anal fissure with high anal resting pressure and no symptoms of fecal …

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a prevalent and distressing skin complication in critically ill patients, leading to increased pain, infection risk and healthcare costs. While several risk prediction models have been developed to guide IAD prevention, their methodological quality, predictive performance and clinical utility remain unclear. A systematic synthesis and evaluation of these models is currently lacking.
AIM: This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analysis existing risk prediction models for IAD in critically ill patients, critically appraising th

CONTEXT: Improved continence outcomes are reliant on identification of unmet need, education delivery, and shared decision-making. The evidence base on which to derive innovative approaches in these areas was unclear.
METHODS: A debate held at the International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society meeting, held in Bristol in June 2024, considered ways to improve research requirements to advance these areas.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Artificial intelligence solutions and digital approaches to healthcare are emerging at pace and offer possibilities to improve these three key areas but t

UNLABELLED: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a skin inflammation caused by contact with urine or faeces or both. It has a negative effect on the patient's quality of life and is indicative of the care provided. However, globally there is a lack of empirical data on the prevalence of IAD.
AIM: To identify, for the first time, the proportion of older adults in extended care settings in Ireland affected by IAD.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional, multisite, point prevalence survey, across three community extended care settings for older people in Ireland.
METHODS: Two clinical nurse specialist

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) is a major concern among hospitals, especially in intensive care units (ICUs).
PURPOSE: To describe ICU nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices of IAD and to examine the relationships with IAD prevalence in the ICU setting.
METHODS: A descriptive correlational design was used including the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis Questionnaire and 1-month IAD prevalence data.
RESULTS: The prevalence of IAD in ICUs was 6.89%. A positive correlation was found between IAD prevalence and nurses' IAD knowled

PURPOSE: To compare the current clinical scoring systems used to quantify the severity of symptoms of faecal incontinence (FI) to patients' subjective scoring of parameters of psychosocial well-being.
METHODS: Patients referred to six European centres for investigation or treatment of symptoms of FI between June 2017 and September 2019 completed a questionnaire that captured patient demographics, incontinence symptoms using St. Mark's Incontinence score (SMIS) and ICIQ-B, psychological well-being (HADS, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and social interaction (a three-item loneliness sc

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Obstetric anal sphincter injuries (OASIS) are a common cause of maternal morbidity with an overall incidence in the UK of 2.9% (range 0-8%). They can cause a range of physical symptoms and psychological distress. This study aims to assess the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of OASIS using endoanal ultrasound (EAUS) and the correlation between confirmed injury and change to anorectal physiology squeeze pressure and the incidence of bowel symptoms.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Retrospective study of prospectively collected data from 1135 women who attended the Third- and F

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: It is known that high-impact exercises can cause an increase in intra-abdominal pressure and provide overload in the pelvic floor structures. We hypothesized that female CrossFit practitioners would report symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) and that there will be factors associated with these dysfunctions.
METHODS: The study design is an online cross-sectional survey. Demographic and anthropometric data, the characterization of CrossFit activity, the description of PFD and previous obstetric history were collected through a structured web-based questionnai

BACKGROUND: Ethnic disparities in continence rates in spina bifida (SB) have been studied regionally but not nationally. National SB Patient Registry (NSBPR) data were analyzed to explore differences in prevalence of bowel and bladder continence and interventions between Hispanics/Latinos and others.
METHODS: Participants 5 to 21 years were categorized into Hispanic/Latino and non-Hispanic/non-Latino. Bladder/bowel continence was defined as dry/no involuntary stool leakage during the day or none/⩽ monthly incontinence. Chi-square test, Wilcoxon Two Sample Test, and generalized estimating equa

Rectal foreign body insertion is a common condition in emergency surgery, which often requires surgical intervention. Here we report a clinical case of rectal foreign body insertion as a rare cause of persistent lumbosacral plexus injury. A 72-year-old man presented to the emergency department complaining of acute bilateral paraplegia with loss of sensation in both legs, as well as total urinary retention. The patient underwent abdominal computed tomography, which showed a rectal foreign body measuring 13 × 11.5 × 10 cm in the lower abdomen and pelvis. Extraluminal assistance through a median

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the relevant anatomy and sonographic, fluoroscopic, and MRI options for evaluating patients with pelvic floor disorders.
CONCLUSION: Disorders of the pelvic floor are a heterogeneous and complex group of problems. Imaging can help elucidate the presence and extent of pelvic floor abnormalities. MRI is particularly well suited for global pelvic floor assessment including pelvic organ prolapse, defecatory function, and pelvic floor support structure integrity.

Urinary and faecal incontinence affects a significant portion of the elderly population. The increase in the incidence of incontinence is not only dependent on age but also on the onset of concomitant ageing issues such as infection, polypharmacy, and decreased cognitive function. If incontinence is left untreated, a host of dermatological complications can occur, including incontinence dermatitis, dermatological infections, intertrigo, vulvar folliculitis, and pruritus ani. The presence of chronic incontinence can produce a vicious cycle of skin damage and inflammation because of the loss of

The male pelvic floor muscles support the abdominal contents, are active during breathing, maintain urinary and faecal continence, increase local blood supply and are active during sexual intercourse. It was hypothesized that weak pelvic floor muscles would compromise these functions in men and lead to urinary and faecal incontinence and sexual dysfunction and that pelvic floor muscle strengthening would restore normal function. After a literature search of randomized controlled trials was undertaken, it was found that weak pelvic floor muscles compromised normal pelvic floor function and led
