A qualitative investigation of the psychosocial services utilised by care-givers of patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in southwestern Uganda.

Individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias often require substantial support from other people. Much of the care-giving is from family members who eventually experience physical, emotional and financial stress, depression and fatigue. In Uganda, families are a cornerstone in providing care to individuals with dementia. However, little is known about the psychosocial supports available to the care-givers in their care-giving role. We assessed the psychosocial supports available to care-givers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in southwestern Uganda. W

Hybrid Explainable Deep Ensemble Framework with self-attention mechanism for early prediction of depression severity using PHQ-9 clinical and behavioral data.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major global mental health disorder that requires accurate, reliable, and interpretable prediction models to support early identification and timely intervention. This study proposes a Hybrid Explainable Deep Ensemble Framework for multiclass prediction of depression severity using PHQ-9 clinical responses and behavioral characteristics. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional machine learning study was conducted using a dataset comprising 682 anonymized participants. Predictor variables included demographic characteristics, PHQ-9 questionnaire items, sleep qualit

Barriers to Guideline-Based Management of Esophageal Carcinoma: A Narrative Review With Special Reference to North East India.

Esophageal carcinoma remains one of the most lethal malignancies worldwide. It poses a significant public health challenge in India, particularly in the North-Eastern region, where the disease burden is among the highest in the country. Contemporary management has evolved into a multidisciplinary, stage-directed, and increasingly biomarker-informed approach. This approach incorporates accurate staging, nutritional assessment, neoadjuvant or perioperative therapy, surgery, definitive chemoradiotherapy, immunotherapy, palliation, and structured follow-up. However, the successful implementation o

Analysis of the Association Between Psychosocial Stressors and Depression Among Family Caregivers of Individuals With Young-Onset Dementia and Late-Onset Dementia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on caregiver depression has mainly focused on caregivers of late-onset dementia (LOD), whereas studies involving young-onset dementia (YOD) remain limited. This study aimed to examine the associations between psychosocial stressors and depression among YOD and LOD caregivers in Japan. METHODS: A total of 1798 questionnaires were distributed to family caregivers affiliated with 214 organisations, including dementia family associations and care facilities. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the

Polluted air and fading memory: Effects of air pollution on Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

Air pollution is widely recognized as a major public health concern, and emerging evidence suggests an association with dementia. Establishing a causal relationship, however, is difficult. Economic cycles affect both dementia prevalence and pollution levels: during economic booms, financial resources for treatment rise, but so do air pollution and work-related stress. In South Korea, air quality has generally improved, even as Alzheimer's cases have increased with population aging, indicating a time-series relationship that biases regression results. Air pollution and vascular dementia also te

Burden, social support, and coping strategies in family caregivers of individuals receiving home mechanical ventilation: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is a treatment method for patients with chronic respiratory failure. HMV is a challenge for both patients and their caregivers. Some studies have shown a higher risk of depression, job loss, or lifestyle disturbance in family members caring for HMV patients. The purpose of the study was to measure caregiver burden, perceived social support, and coping strategies. METHODS: In the cross-sectional study, 58 caregivers (65.52% female) of HMV patients treated at five healthcare institutions were surveyed. The questionnaires including patient/caregiver

Medical student anxiety and depression in the COVID-19 Era: Unique needs of underrepresented students.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant morbidity, mortality, and mental health consequences. Few studies have examined the mental toll of COVID-19 on United States (US) medical students, who experience greater rates of depression and anxiety than the general population. Students who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URM) may experience even greater mental health adversities than non-URM peers. This study examines COVID-19's impact on preclinical medical student anxiety and depression and unique challenges disproportionately affecting URM students during the initial ph

Community health workers at the dawn of a new era: 8. Incentives and remuneration.

BACKGROUND: This is the eighth in our series of 11 papers on "CHWs at the Dawn of a New Era". Community health worker (CHW) incentives and remuneration are core issues that affect the performance of individual CHWs and the performance of the overall CHW programme. A better understanding of what motivates CHWs and a stronger awareness of the social justice dimensions of remuneration are essential in order to build stronger CHW programmes and to support the professionalization of the CHW workforce. METHODS: We provide examples of incentives that have been provided to CHWs and identify factors t

Preschoolers' emotion knowledge: The role of cognitive flexibility and family interactions in financially vulnerable contexts.

A growing number of studies recognize the importance of emotion knowledge for later child social and academic adaptation, but most studies have not considered the various components of emotion knowledge (i.e., receptive, expressive, stereotypical, and nonstereotypical emotion konwledge). This study was to better understand the role of both family interactions and cognitive flexibility on the different components of emotion knowledge in preschoolers in the context of financial insecurity. Family interactions of 85 families with children aged 3-5 were filmed during a home visit. During the same

Gambling Harm Experienced by Children Exposed to Parental Gambling: An Online Survey of Australians.

Although child wellbeing is known to be negatively affected by gambling, relatively little is known about the specific harms experienced by children exposed to parental gambling problems. The current study aimed to better understand gambling harm directly attributed to regular parental gambling in key areas of child wellbeing: financial, psychological, interpersonal wellbeing and intergenerational transmission of problem gambling. Using data from a national survey of Australian adults exposed to parental gambling under the age of 18 (n = 211), the results show that parental gambling was relate

Why They Stayed and Why They Left-A Case Study from Ellicott City, MD after Flash Flooding.

Ellicott City, MD was devasted by flash flooding in 2016 and 2018. A lack of qualitative research has been conducted on topics related to sense of place and flash flooding, especially in the United States. In this study, we reveal reasons why some who experienced flash flooding continued to stay the flood zone and why some leave. We utilized a phenomenological approach to answer these research questions. Data were generated through in-depth interviews with 19 participants from the Historic District and adjacent neighborhoods in Ellicott City. The most common reasons participants stayed were: (

The financial impact of COVID-19: Evidence from an event study of global hospitality firms.

This paper examines the daily abnormal stock price returns of a sample of 154 publicly-traded hospitality firms from 23 different countries representing over $400 billion in combined market capitalization around the time that COVID-19 was first viewed by stock market participants as a major-possibly even existential-threat. The findings of the study suggest that, financially, hotels performed better than restaurants, which themselves performed better than casinos. These findings are consistent with medical recommendations concerning the relative safety of various hospitality-related activities

The Iranian model of living renal transplantation.

Organ shortage for transplantation remains a worldwide serious problem for kidney patients with end-stage renal failure, and several countries have tried different models to address this issue. Iran has 20 years of experience with one such model that involves the active role of the government and charity foundations. Patients with a desperate demand for a kidney have given rise to a black market of brokers and other forms of organ commercialism only accessible to those with sufficient financial resources. The current Iranian model has enabled most of the Iranian kidney transplant candidates, i
