Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail and is the most common nail affliction in the general population. Certain patient populations are at greater risk of infection and the prevalence of onychomycosis reported in the literature has yet to be summarized across these at-risk groups. We performed a systematic review of the literature and calculated pooled prevalence estimates of onychomycosis in at-risk patient populations. The prevalence of dermatophyte toenail onychomycosis was as follows: general population 3.22% (3.07, 3.38), children 0.14% (0.11, 0.18), the elderly 10.28% (8.63, 12

UNLABELLED: Ingrowing nail also known as onychocryptosis is a common health problem. This disease mostly affects young people, often carrying a considerable amount of socio-economic implications. It's foot problem that usually manifests as inflammation of tissue along the side of a toenail. The aim of the study was to asses and to compare effectiveness of electrocautery and phenol application in partial matrixectomy after partial nail extraction in the treatment of ingrown toenails.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group of 60 patients with ingrowing toenail which was randomized into two groups unde

BACKGROUND: Superficial fungal infections are caused by dermatophytes, yeasts or filamentous fungi. They are correlated to the etiologic agent, the level of integrity of the host immune response, the site of the lesion and also the injured tissue.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to isolate and to identify onychomycosis agents in institutionalized elderly (60 years old +).
METHODS: The identification of the fungi relied upon the combined results of mycological examination, culture isolation and micro cultures observation under light microscopy from nail and interdigital scales, which

BACKGROUND: Fungal infection of the nail affects millions of people worldwide, and has an estimated prevalence of about 10% of the general population. Laboratory confirmation of fungal infection is currently accepted as a requirement before initiation of antifungal treatment in clinical practice.
AIM: To examine the rationale for systemic treatment in cases of clinical onychomycosis with negative results on fungal examination (potassium hydroxide test and fungal culture).
METHODS: In total, 147 patients with suspected clinical toenail onychomycosis but with negative results on fungal examina

Tungiasis is the parasitic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, also called the jigger flea, found in most intertropical countries. The contamination occurs when walking barefoot in the sand: adult females actively burrow the foot epidermis leading to self-limited lesions responsible for itching or pain. The diagnosis is made on clinical observation and history of travelling to an endemic country. The simple treatment is surgical extraction of the flea.

Exophiala jeanselmei is clinically redefined as a rare agent of subcutaneous lesions of traumatic origin, eventually causing eumycetoma. Mycetoma is a localized, chronic, suppurative subcutaneous infection of tissue and contiguous bone after a traumatic inoculation of the causative organism. In advanced stages of the infection, one finds tumefaction, abscess formation and draining sinuses. The species has been described as being common in the environment, but molecular methods have only confirmed its occurrence in clinical samples. Current diagnostics of E. jeanselmei is based on sequence data

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of viral warts is often straightforward, but their treatment is difficult and always takes a long time. Nowadays warts are usually treated with conventional methods including topical keratolytic agents, cryotherapy, electrosurgery and laser surgery. However, such treatments cause different complications, and the warts become recalcitrant.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of intralesional pingyangmycin injection for resistant plantar warts.
METHODS: From June 2006 to September 2008, we treated 66 patients with plantar warts by intralesional pingyangmycin injectio

OBJECTIVES: The aims of our study were to ascertain the proportion of Fusarium onychomycosis among patients with suspected onychomycosis, to record clinical features and to assess the efficacy of itraconazole pulse therapy in treatment.
METHODS: Six patients with positive isolates of Fusarium sp were treated in an open, prospective manner with itraconazole: two pulses for fingernails and three pulses for toenails. Significant growth of Fusarium sp was considered when both microscopy of direct mounts in KOH and culture were positive for mold. Efficacy parameters were mycological cure and clini

BACKGROUND: Itraconazole given in pulse therapy has become popular for onychomycosis treatment since it results in less plasma exposure to the drug while maintaining an effective drug concentration in the nail plate and also increasing patient compliance.
OBJECTIVE: The current study aims to evaluate two different regimens of itraconazole for toenail onychomycosis, looking at both the immediate post-therapy cure rate and the relapse rate after 2 years.
METHODS: Two groups of 52 patients each were given either 'standard' oral itraconazole pulse therapy for 3 months (200 mg x 2/day for 1 week/

BACKGROUND: Many patients with chronic dermatophytosis and onychomycosis have depressed cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to trichophytin.
OBJECTIVE: The fungicidal properties of oral terbinafine provide a unique opportunity to explore whether elimination of antigen could restore CMI response in these patients.
METHODS: A double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the effect of terbinafine (250 mg/d for 12 weeks) on skin immunoreactivity to intradermal trichophytin antigen (TRIPA), mycologic status of the nail, and nail growth in patients with toenail onychomycosis.
RESULTS: Skin reactivit

BACKGROUND: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) can originate onychopathy per se. We have anecdotally observed nail changes in patients with CVI, but there are few studies which determine the frequency of both onychopathy and onychomycosis in these patients
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of nail pathology and onychomycosis in patients with CVI PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 36 adult patients, both men and women, aged from 18 to 59 years, with clinically documented venous leg ulcers. All patients were examined by a dermatologist and the venous leg ulcers were

Allergic contact dermatitis from shoes may have a typical pattern of presentation, but we have found that the distribution of dermatitis is often unhelpful in establishing the diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to define the features of foot dermatitis in children and to assess its outcome, in comparison to adults with foot eruptions. Relevant allergens were found in 15 out of 29 children and 26 out of 57 adults with foot eruptions. The most common allergens in children were rubber chemicals and topical medicaments. Adults showed a similar pattern, but also reacted to clothing dyes. The progno

A 70-year-old diabetic woman with sensory polyneuropathy presented with osteonecrosis of the toes and a plaque-like lesion on the dorsum of the ipsilateral foot. Histological diagnosis of eccrine syringofibroadenoma (ES) was made. A review of the literature reveals several cases of solitary ES of the foot in diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy. This variant of ES seems to be an eccrine sweat duct hyperplasia during the restoration of skin structures damaged by traumas in a situation of peripheral neuropathy. Diabetes and polyneuropathy should be searched for in patients with ES, parti

The incidence of contact allergy was studied in a series of 165 patients with eczematous dermatitis of the feet correlated clinically with shoe contact. Positive reactions to one or more substances were recorded in 108 patients (65.4%). Among the relevant sensitizers were chromium, paraphenylenediamine, paratertiary butylphenolformaldehyde resin and nickel, while the other allergens were benzocaine, neomycin, balsam of Peru, ethylenediamine and parabens. Allergic contact dermatitis of the feet can be prevented by recognition of the allergens responsible, control of hyperhidrosis and avoidance

INTRODUCTION: Terbinafine has been a cornerstone in dermatophyte infection treatment. Despite its global efficacy, the emergence of terbinafine resistance raises concerns, requiring ongoing vigilance.
AREAS COVERED: This paper focuses on evaluating the efficacy and safety of terbinafine in treating dermatophyte toenail infections. Continuous and pulse therapies, with a 24-week continuous regimen and a higher dosage of 500 mg/day have demonstrated superior efficacy to the FDA approved regimen of 250 mg/day x 12 weeks. Pulse therapies, though showing comparable effectiveness, present debates wi
