A three-part study, with successive modifications based on preceding results, was conducted to evaluate ureteral placement of metallic stents. Gianturco self-expanding (10 mm and 4 mm diameter) and balloon-expanded (4 mm diameter) metallic stents were placed in normal and stenotic canine ureters. No migration or ureteral perforation occurred during the follow-up of 10 mm stents. Varying degrees of hydronephrosis and hydroureter were found on all 1-week pyelograms. At 4 weeks, complete occlusion of the stented ureter was noted in all cases because of mucosal hyperplasia around the stent wires.

The authors describe a case in which a leaflet from a mitral valve prosthesis embolized to the right external iliac artery. Intravascular ultrasound proved useful in locating the valve fragment prior to and during surgery, allowing for its removal.

Hemodialysis was performed in 349 cases on 35 patients with 50 special subclavian catheters. The catheters were inserted infraclavicularly with Seldinger's technique. The cannulation period was 26.6 (1-148) days and on the average 7 hemodialyses (1-63) were performed through 1 catheter. A male newborn underwent a myelomeningocele repair, with subsequent placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for treatment of hydrocephalus. Five days after shunt surgery, the infant acutely developed a deeply sunken fontanel, pallor, tachypnea, bradycardia, and irritability. Chest radiographs revealed intrathoracic migration of the distal shunt tubing and a tension hydrothorax. Silicone synovitis is a late complication of silicone implant arthroplasty. The problem is usually heralded by pain and limitation of motion caused by synovitis and bone destruction. Once silicone synovitis develops, secondary procedures include removal of the implant, synovectomy, and reconstructive surgery individualized to the patient's pathology.

We report two complications of silicone elastomer finger joint prostheses. In one patient, the prostheses broke, with silicone particles present in synovium ("detritic synovitis"). In another patient, silicone particles were found in an axillary lymph node five years after insertion of prostheses in the ipsilateral hand (prostheses were intact at the time). Microscopically, silicone particles in synovium and lymph node were identical to particles abraded from a new prosthesis.

A 76-year-old man was referred to our clinic after a foreign body seen in his sigmoid colon during a colonoscopy. He had undergone three operations for a left inguinal hernia within the previous 8 years, and the first procedure was a laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal approach. INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic migration of plastic biliary stents is performed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for biliary and pancreatic diseases. This plays an increasingly important role. Intestinal perforation caused by stent migration is one of the complications. CASE SUMMARY: A 2-month-old kitten was presented for ataxia and depressed mental status after implantation of a pet identification microchip. Radiographs were taken immediately by the referring veterinarian and showed a longitudinal metallic foreign body (electronic microchip) within the cervical vertebral canal at the craniocervical junction. The injection material polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAG; Ferrosan, Søborg, Denmark) is often used as space filler for soft-tissue defects.
