Progressive craniofacial bone loss after cosmetic surgery at the forehead.

We present the case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of plastic surgery at the forehead who complained of progressive indentations at the frontal skull. CT and MR scans revealed significant bone thinning, presenting as lytic skull lesions, which progressed over a period of 3 years. Biopsies were obtained from the lytic lesions and histology showed fibrotic tissue, synthetic residue of previous cosmetic procedure, and no evidence of infection or neoplasm. Progressive cranial bone resorption places the patient at increased risk for cerebral injury. This case highlights a potential complicat

Frontal Sinus Osteoma Presenting with Meningitis and Epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Osteomas are benign lesions of bone, most frequently seen in the paranasal sinuses; however, they are typically asymptomatic and without complication. We report a rare case of large frontal sinus osteoma with intracranial extension, associated with meningitis and the development of seizures. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 38-year-old man with a prolonged history of headache and seizures, who was seen by multiple specialists previously, all of whom deferred treatment. After years of worsening seizure activity, he finally underwent surgical resection of the lesion at our institu

Post Traumatic Tension Pneumocephalus: The Mount Fuji Sign.

Pneumocephalus is defined as the presence of intracranial air. This is most commonly secondary to a traumatic head injury. Tension pneumocephalus presents radiologically with compression of the frontal lobes and widening of the interhemispheric space between the frontal lobes. It is often termed the Mount Fuji sign due to a perceived similarity with an iconic mountain peak in Japan. We present the case of a 52-year-old gentleman who presented to the emergency department shortly before 8am on a Saturday morning following an assault. He was alert and ambulatory with no clinical evidence of raise

The effect of intra-articular ACL reconstruction on the growth plates of rabbits.

We performed intra-articular reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with the semitendinosus tendon placed in 2 mm diameter tunnels in 21 skeletally immature rabbits. The operation caused 11% damage to the physis of the femur on the frontal plane and 3% of its cross-sectional area but no alteration of growth or axial deviation of the bone resulted. In the tibia, the operation caused 12% damage to the physis in the frontal plane and 4% of the cross-sectional area. Two tibiae developed valgus deformities and one was shortened. Histological examination showed no areas of epiphysiod

Description of a novel method of femoral torsion correction in dogs: An in vitro study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe a novel method of femoral torsion correction in dogs and partially validate the technique by applying it to femoral bone models. MODELS AND PROCEDURE: We conducted an in vitro study using 12 femoral bone models. Twelve bone models, consisting of 6 replicas of each of 2 right femurs (Bone Model 1 and Bone Model 2), were reconstructed, using stereolithography, from femoral computed tomographic scans of 2 chondrodystrophic dogs. An intramedullary pin-assisted distal femoral osteotomy (IPA-DFO) was done on all bone models to correct 30° of to

Diffuse symmetric meningioma en plaque mimicking metabolic disease of bone.

A 50-year-old African American woman with right proptosis and decreased vision demonstrated symmetric, bilateral thickening of the sphenoid wings, calvarium, and skull base on computed tomography. Histopathologic evaluation of the hyperostotic lesion was consistent with meningotheliomatous meningioma. The patient underwent uncomplicated right frontal orbital craniectomy with postoperative radiation. The presentation of en plaque meningioma, when diffuse and symmetric, can mimic a metabolic disease of bone.

Correlation of Radial and Ulnar Shaft Bowing Using the 3D Central Line Method.

Forearm rotation depends on the multiplanar bowing of the radius and ulna. Despite the importance of the fundamental 3D anatomic understanding of the forearm for fracture fixation or implant design, all morphological studies have applied only two-dimensional methods rather than analyzing the true full 3D space. No study investigated the intra-pair relation of ulna/radius either. Therefore, we processed CT scans of 30 healthy forearms into 3D models. Each bone was divided into 10 segments along the rotation axis, creating 11 cross-sections with central points. Connecting these central points yi

Frontal sinus mucosa suture closure technique for prevention of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea after bifrontal craniotomy: long-term follow-up results.

OBJECTIVE: Bifrontal craniotomy often involves the bony opening and mucosal disruption of the frontal sinus (FS), which can lead to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and meningitis. These complications are particularly associated with surgical treatments for skull base tumors and anterior cerebral artery aneurysms. The authors initially reported on the basic technique in 2014 with 51 cases. This study presents a detailed description of their technique and postoperative management for sealing the exposed FS during bifrontal craniotomy, including long-term follow-up results and outcomes. Two-Staged Cranial Reconstruction: Tissue Expansion, Galeocapsular Flaps, and CAD/CAM Three-Dimensional Titanium Implants.

Reconstruction of cranial defects after prior surgery remains aesthetically and technically challenging, particularly when osseous deficiency is accompanied by limited soft-tissue coverage. Recent advances in computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing have expanded the role of patient-specific implants in late cranial reconstruction and provided alternatives in cases in which revision osteotomy or repeat cranioplasty is not suitable. A 19-year-old male with residual cranial deformity after fronto-orbital advancement for unilateral anterior plagiocephaly underwent a 2-stage procedure. I

Microarray analysis of the role of regional dura mater in cranial suture fate.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis, the premature fusion of cranial sutures, results in serious neurologic and morphologic abnormalities when left untreated. Surgical excision of the fused sutures and remodeling of the skull remains the standard therapy. Development of novel, minimally invasive therapies for craniosynostosis will undoubtedly be dependent on a more thorough understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying this abnormality. Significant evidence suggests the influence of regional dura mater on the behavior of the overlying suture complex. The mouse model has been instrumental in in

Squamosal suture craniosynostosis in Muenke syndrome.

Muenke syndrome caused by point mutation (C749G) in the FGFR3 gene affects 1 in 30,000 newborns and accounts for 25% to 30% of genetic causes of craniosynostosis. Anomalies in patients with Muenke syndrome include craniosynostosis, hypertelorism, sensorineural hearing loss, and developmental delay, among others. Most craniosynostoses in patients with Muenke syndrome involve bicoronal suture fusion. This article reports, for the first time, the existence of squamosal craniosynostosis in patients with Muenke syndrome.

Early removal of transorbital penetrating traumatic brain injury by a wooden object: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Transorbital penetrating traumatic brain injury (TPTBI) is a rare cause of penetrating head injury, yet the diagnoses can be overlooked in some cases due to incomplete history, trivial trauma, and the absence of immediate neurologic deficits. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old male child was admitted with a diagnosis of TPTBI by a wooden object. Noncontrast enhanced CT scan revealed a linear hypodense structure extending from the superior wall of the right orbit into the frontal lobe with displaced fragments into the brain. Additionally, cerebral contusion, pneumocep

Severe combined immunodeficiency pig as an emerging animal model for human diseases and regenerative medicines.

The supraorbital ethmoid air cell (SOEC) is an anatomical variation of the ethmoid air cell system that pneumatizes the orbital plate of the frontal bone. It affects the frontal recess configuration by opening posterior and lateral to the frontal sinus ostium. This cross-sectional observational study includes 100 patients with Supra orbital ethmoid air cells including various pathologies. We picked up the first 100 patients who had SOEC in all the CT PNS done for various sinonasal pathologies. The incidence of the cell was about 43%. The most common type was the cell extending up to the medial…

Morphometric study of the primary ossification center of the frontal squama in the human fetus.

PURPOSES: Detailed morphometric data on the development of ossification centers in human fetuses is useful in the early detection of skeletal dysplasias associated with a delayed development of ossification centers and their mineralization. Quantitative analysis of primary ossification centers of cranial bones is sporadic due to limited availability of fetal material. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The size of the primary ossification center of the frontal squama in 37 human (16 males and 21 females) spontaneously aborted human fetuses aged 18-30 weeks was studied by means of CT, digital-image analysi

Removal of a Frontal Sinus Osteoma and Reconstruction by a Custom-Made Implant with Neuronavigation Assistance.

The authors report the surgical treatment of an extensive right frontal sinus osteoma assisted by neuronavigation and reconstruction by a hydroxyapatite custom-made implant. The patient presents with ptosis, hypoglobus, and proptosis of the right eye, without any visual impairment. Computed tomographic (CT) scan showed a very large bony mass involving right frontal sinus and displacing the orbital roof. A stereolithographic model-guided planning was carried out to obtain a practical simulation of the surgical operation and it was submitted to a new CT scan to acquire the reference point to rea
