SummaryHenry Thomas Hadley Williams, known professionally as Hadley Williams, was a surgeon and teacher whose career illustrates the transformation of surgery in Canada from a craft learned by apprenticeship to a university and hospital discipline. Born in Devon, England, in 1864 and educated in southwestern Ontario, Williams returned to Britain for advanced surgical training and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1899. In 1911 he succeeded John Wishart, the University of Western Ontario's first professor of clinical surgery, and consolidated a pre-Flexner surgical

Health equity and the social determinants of health are increasingly prioritized in health care delivery across North America and globally, yet academic medicine remains ill equipped to support equity-focused advocacy. We argue that this stems mainly from a gap in recognizing advocacy as an academic pillar alongside research, education, and administration. Advocacy is undervalued in academic medicine, as reflected in teaching, hiring, and promotion criteria and what is published in academic journals. Health equity is essential for the health of populations, and the current structure of academi

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle- income countries face a surgical workforce shortage amidst a high burden of diseases amenable to surgery. Rural Nigeria, which is mainly supported by primary health care, lacks access to timely, affordable and safe surgical care, leading to high morbidity and mortality. This review aims to assess the burden of lack of personnel, evaluate current innovative strategies, and provide future directions for rural surgical workforce development in Nigeria.
METHODS: A total of 79 articles were included in this review. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Pub

INTRODUCTION: Spinal anesthesia (SA) is commonly used within the specialties of orthopedic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, spine surgery, and general surgery, and offers several benefits over general anesthesia (GA). However, SA is used much less frequently in plastic surgery. This review analyzed currently existing data on SA use across various surgical specialties and compared the benefits and complications of SA to those of GA, to assess its utility and potential for more widespread use in plastic surgery.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the PubMed and Co…

Jan (Johann) Mikulicz-Radecki (1850-1905) was one of the most illustrious surgeons in the history of medicine, and eponyms in modern medicine bearing his name are still numerous. In this paper we present only a small part of his achievements, focusing on oncological aspects and narrowing our investigation to the period of 1882-1887, when Mikulicz was a professor in the Medical Faculty of Jagiellonian University, in Krakow.

Since 2018, we have been using a 3D printer to fabricate a proprietary device for fixing nasotracheal tubes. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the impact of this nasotracheal intubation (NTI) fixation device. It has been used in 335 patients undergoing general anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial surgeries. No necrosis or permanent tissue damage was observed, and none of the patients developed complications requiring treatment. No unintentional tube-related incidents such as extubation, dislocation of the tube, or disconnection between the tube and the artificial respirat

Edward Delos Churchill, one of the most notorious American surgeons of the 20th century, influenced countless surgeons and set medical practices that were used for decades. His scope of interests included surgery of the lungs, heart, thyroid, parathyroid glands, and military surgery among others. Churchill was one of the first to expand the field of the newly found parathyroid bodies by performing several experimental excisions of the glands and publishing numerous guidelines based on his innovative work. Additionally, he aspired to address many of the literature gaps that led him to conclusio

BACKGROUND: In vascular surgery, novel synthetic prosthesis materials for patch-angioplasties, interpositions, bypasses and shunts are continuously under development and optimization. The characteristics of an ideal vascular prosthesis would display long-term patency, biocompatibility, durability, low porosity, lack of stich hole bleeding, ease of handling, kink resistance, infection resistance and reasonable costs. The aim of this study was to establish and report a reliable sheep model including potential pitfalls where those parameters could be analyzed. Before surgery, sheep were acclimati

Earlier publications by our group have reported the major contributions of Beauchêne fils, Edme François Chauvot de Beauchêne (1778-1830), a prosector, and surgeon in Paris. These included a variety of firsts: the finding of an intraneural ganglion cyst, the description of the exploded skull (Beauchêne) technique, and the case of air pulmonary embolism. This article describes the exhaustive efforts necessary to locate a portrait of him. Information obtained along the circuitous journey through 13 generations over five centuries will clarify the important medical accomplishments by individuals

Ludwik Rydygier is undoubtedly the father of Polish gastrointestinal surgery. He performed two pioneering stomach operations: on 16 November 1880, first in Poland and second in the world after Jules Pean, the surgical removal of the pylorus in a 64-year-old patient suffering from stomach cancer; the operation took about four hours, unfortunately the patient died 12 hours later, and on 21 November 1881 he performed the world's first pylorectomy due to gastric ulcer, applying his own method of pylorectomy followed by the restoration by end-to-end anastomosis of the duodenal stump with the stomac

By their very nature, overseas medical missions (and even domestic medical charities such as "free clinics") are designed to serve "vulnerable populations." If these groups were capable of protecting their own interests, they would not need the help of medical volunteers: their medical needs would be met through existing government health programs or by utilizing their own resources. Medical volunteerism thus seems like an unfettered good: a charitable activity provided by well-meaning doctors and nurses who want to give of their time, skills, and resources to help those who would not otherwis

The parathyroid endocrine glands, usually four in number and about the size of a split pea, lie on either side of the posterior aspect of the thyroid gland. Occasionally one or more of these structures are found in an aberrant position in the neck or even in the superior mediastinum. The parathyroid secretion, parathormone, regulates the level of serum calcium within sharply defined limits. Lack of parathormone, with lowering of the serum calcium, results in hyper-irritability of skeletal muscle, the clinical condition known as tetany. This is encountered following inadvertent removal or bruis

BACKGROUND: Lack of resources and dedicated breast radiology has forced professionals other than radiologists to read mammography. We report a series of surgeon-read mammography in a developing country.
METHODS: Data were collected prospectively form January 2003 to June 2008 for all mammography performed at a tertiary hospital. The data acquired were demographics, previous treatment for breast pathology, and indication for and outcome of mammography, including diagnostic procedures and their results. The results were benchmarked against standard performance indicators.
RESULTS: Of 8,743 mam

BACKGROUND: Left-handedness was historically considered a disability and a social stigma, and teachers would make efforts to suppress it in their students. Little data are available on the impact of left-handedness on surgical training. This report reviews available data on this subject.
METHODS: We did systematic electronic and manual literature searches using a predetermined strategy independently by 2 investigators, 1 left- and 1 right-handed, to identify reports on surgical training and left-handedness.
RESULTS: The review revealed 19 studies on the subject of left-handedness and surgica

Because of its vivid manifestations of blood-stained mucus passed per rectum, the violent abdominal colic, the easily palpable abdominal mass and, in late cases, a prolapsing 'tumour' to be seen extruding through the anal verge, it is not suprising that intussusception in infants was one of the earliest causes of intestinal obstruction to be clearly recognised. Treatment was conservative. Efforts were made to reduce the mass with rectal bougies or enemas. Surgeons were encouraged to do this by the all too rare reports of successes, or by the still rarer accounts of spontaneous cure as a result

Itinerant traditional surgeons work throughout sub-Saharan Africa and perform many procedures including: tooth extraction, abortion, injections, incising and draining abscesses, uvulectomy, circumcision, inguinal hernia surgery, non-invasive cataract luxation, and surgery on closed and open fractures. Cutting and injection equipment are not cleaned and are used on a rapid succession of up to 10 patients in a single clinic session. These procedures cause haemorrhage, septicaemia, tetanus, gangrene, contractures, abscesses, airway obstruction, keloids, iatrogenic fistulae, lacerations of vital o

The quality of neonatal surgical care and scientific publications are reliable yardsticks that were used to assess the status of pediatric surgery in India. A specific questionnaire to assess neonatal care and surgical outcome was mailed to all institutes imparting pediatric surgery training. Data were obtained regarding the outcome of important neonatal surgical conditions for the year 1998 and a PubMed literature search was performed to identify scientific articles between 1995 and 2000. Though a literature search was done to compile a complete list of publications of all the consultants in
