Exploring Participant Perspectives on Implementation and Sustainment of Taking It to the Pews: A Faith-Based HIV Intervention With African American Churches.

African American faith institutions can play a key role in increasing HIV education and testing in communities disproportionately burdened by HIV. This focus group study explored church participant perspectives of a religiously tailored HIV education and testing intervention implemented through a clustered, randomized controlled trial with 14 African American churches in Kansas City. Focus group participants from intervention churches emphasized the importance of churches providing access to HIV screening/education and support for people with HIV. They noted that pastors' involvement (e.g., in

Understanding Cancer Clinical Trial Participation in Rural Communities: A Qualitative Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Participation in cancer clinical trials is essential for advancing oncologic care, yet enrollment among rural populations remains disproportionately low. These communities face many hurdles including geographical distance from medical centers, healthcare workforce shortages, and deep-seated medical mistrust that may contribute to survival inequities. AIMS: To address these gaps, a Research Navigator program was launched through the Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute to engage rural Florida residents in focus group sessions to identify barriers to trial participation.

National Versus State-Level Racial Disparities in Acute Stroke Interventions Using Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Data.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities have been reported in stroke care, but understanding if there is regional variability is critical to focusing policies and resources. Here, we sought to study racial and ethnic inequity in the administration of thrombolysis and thrombectomy at the national and state levels. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Program registry data from 2003 to 2022 to evaluate racial disparities in the administration of acute stroke treatments in US patients. We used mixed-effects modeling to analyze national and state-level di

What influences women's decisions to participate in trials for prevention of venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the puerperium: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Thromboprophlyaxis for the prevention of venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the puerperium is widespread, but there is a lack of evidence on the risks and benefits of thromboprophylaxis within this population. Trials involving pregnant women often struggle to recruit and retain participants which makes It difficult to improve the evidence base. We undertook qualitative evaluation of patient perspectives of pregnancy/postpartum thromboprophylaxis to understand willingness to participate in future trials. METHODS: We undertook four focus groups of women who had thromboproph

Socio-cultural and structural barriers influencing parents' knowledge and access to information on schistosomiasis in children around Ugandan Lakes.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, the national prevalence of schistosomiasis is 36.1% among the two-to-four-year age group. Knowledge about schistosomiasis and socio-cultural factors have been reported to influence adult participation in mass drug administrations of praziquantel, the standard medication used to treat the disease. In advance and support of the (pilot) introduction of the recently developed paediatric praziquantel formulation (arpraziquantel), we conducted research on parent and other community members' knowledge about paediatric schistosomiasis, their information sources, and potential pe

Exploring barriers to accessing treatment for Lymphatic Filariasis through a socio-ecological lens in Buvuma and Napak districts, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization launched the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis in 2000, which aimed at eradicating the disease by 2030. This goal depends on community mass drug administration and essential care. Despite these efforts, many rural communities still face untreated lymphatic filariasis and lack access to treatment and self-management. Using a socioecological model, this study examined barriers to treatment and support for people living with lymphatic filariasis in Uganda's Buvuma and Napak districts. METHODS: We conducted 12 key informant interviews wit

COVID-19 vaccination attitudes and uptake: A sociocultural perspective focusing on parents and peers.

The global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical importance of widespread vaccination to mitigate the impact of the virus on public health. The current study aimed to investigate which social influences might be most important for predicting attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination and vaccine uptake among young students in the UK. We focused on the cultural evolution and social transmission aspects, i.e., parent-to-child versus peer-to-peer, of attitudes and vaccine uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 192 UK students (aged 18 to 35 years old) filled in an

Culture, community, and cancer: understandings of breast cancer from a non-lived experience among women living in Soweto.

BACKGROUND: Individual perceptions, socio-cultural beliefs and health system factors are key determinants of people's health seeking behavior and are widely cited as the causes of delayed breast cancer diagnosis among women from structurally vulnerable settings. Asking: "how do women with a non-lived experience of cancer understand the disease and, what informs their health seeking behaviors?", we qualitatively explored, individual, sociocultural and health system elements from a conceptual model derived from the Socioecological, Health Belief and Cancer Stigma Frameworks, to understand perspe

Improving Nursing Oral Care Practice for Community-Dwelling Care-Dependent Older People.

AIM: Oral care is one of the most neglected nursing practices owing to a lack of training, standard nursing oral care guidelines and low confidence and skills. There is little evidence to inform the development of oral care training and guidelines, which ideally should be done in collaboration with oral health professionals. Further, there is a lack of research, particularly in New Zealand, with nursing staff caring for care-dependent older people, including those ageing in their own homes. This pilot study aimed to determine the impact of oral care training on nursing staff knowledge, attitud

Knowledge and attitudes are important factors in farmers' choice of lamb tail docking length.

BACKGROUND: Tail docking is common practice in the sheep industry to prevent soiling of the breech and flystrike. To ensure optimal healing after tail docking and reduce the risk of arthritis, perineal cancers and prolapses, it is recommended to dock tails equivalent to the length of the vulva. However, recent studies have found that some tails are docked too short (24-86 per cent). METHODS: To address this issue, this study aimed to identify key drivers behind tail docking length decisions. Two focus groups, phone (n=30) and online surveys (n=21) were conducted in regional Victoria, Australi
