Repeat HIV testers at a London same-day testing clinic.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the characteristics of repeat HIV testers with first-time testers in a National Health Service HIV testing clinic in London. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to clinic attenders between September 1995 and January 1996. The sample was stratified by gender and sexual orientation. Repeat and first-time testers were compared with respect to recent sexual risk behaviour, reasons for taking the HIV test, condom use, knowledge of sex partner's HIV status, and sociodemographic and psychosocial variables. RESULTS: Of 965 clinic attenders su

Core recruitment effects in SIS models with constant total populations.

We consider a set of SIS models for a heterosexually transmitted disease in which there is recruitment between core and non-core subpopulations as a function of prevalence of the disease. Behavior diverges from the traditional R0 threshold behavior and yields an extra pair of endemic equilibria in one case and a limit cycle in the other. Total at-risk population is constant.

Donor-conceived adolescents' interest in obtaining information about their identity-release oocyte or sperm donor-results from the Swedish Study on Gamete Donation.

STUDY QUESTION: Do donor-conceived adolescents in lesbian- and heterosexual-couple families intend to request information about their identity-release oocyte or sperm donor? SUMMARY ANSWER: While more than half of adolescents intended to request donor information, being uncertain about making such requests was quite common, particularly among adolescents reporting better family functioning and those conceived with donor sperm in heterosexual-couple families. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Increasing numbers of children conceived with identity-release gamete donation are approaching the age when they

Fixed or Fluid? Sexual Identity Fluidity in a Large National Panel Study of New Zealand Adults.

Sexual orientation has been defined as an enduring aspect of the self, but emerging evidence reveals that people's sexual attractions, behaviors, and identities can shift over time. To examine this possibility, we present a large longitudinal analysis of sexual orientation identity fluidity among New Zealand adults (Ntotal = 45,856; age = 18-99; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority (LGB+) ns = 746-3,387). Over seven years, 5.7% of participants changed sexual identities at least once. Change was bi-directional (i.e. toward and away from LGB+ identities) and most common in people wh

Reproductive Health Considerations in Sexual and/or Gender Minority Adolescents.

Disparities exist in the area of reproductive health for lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB), and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) adolescents compared with cisgender, heterosexual adolescents, particularly related to pregnancy and pregnancy risk factors. Review of the literature indicates an estimated increased risk of adolescent pregnancy involvement between 2 and 10 times higher for LGB youth compared with heterosexual youth. This might be explained by a broad spectrum of sexual health risks experienced, including an earlier age of sexual debut, exposure to sexual abuse, and a higher nu

Towards a gender perspective in qualitative research on voluntary medical male circumcision in east and southern Africa.

The World Health Organization endorsed voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) in 2007 as an effective method to provide partial protection against heterosexual female-to-male transmission of HIV in regions with high rates of such transmission, and where uptake of VMMC is low. Qualitative research conducted in east and southern Africa has focused on assessing acceptability, barriers to uptake of VMMC and the likelihood of VMMC increasing men's adoption of risky sexual behaviours. Less researched, however, have been the perceptions of women and sexual minorities towards VMMC, even though the

Drug use and sexual arrangements among gay couples: frequency, interdependence, and associations with sexual risk.

Rates of drug use among gay men are higher than their heterosexual counterparts and drug use is a prominent risk factor for HIV transmission. Studies using heterosexual samples have found that being partnered reduces the risk of drug use and individuals in a relationship tend to have similar use patterns. Studies among gay men suggest that sexual agreements may be an important predictor of drug use. Data from 322 partnered gay men were collected and the 161 matched couples were categorized as monogamous (52.8 %), monogamish (14.9 %), open (13.0 %), and discrepant (19.3 %). Patterns of signific

Repro-sexual intersections: sperm donation, HIV prevention and the public interest in semen.

In the scientific literature on fertility and assisted reproduction, and in the corresponding area of clinical practice, increasing attention has been paid to two groups: people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and gay men. However, research on fertility in the context of HIV focuses almost exclusively on heterosexual couples, whereas studies on non-heterosexual reproduction rarely mention HIV, despite the fact that, in many western countries, HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men is higher than ever before and men who have sex with men are the only group in which ne

Determinants and prevalence of HIV infection in pregnant Peruvian women.

OBJECTIVES: To determine age-specific seroprevalence, risk factors, and risk markers for heterosexually-acquired HIV infection among pregnant women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of 12436 consecutive pregnant women in Lima, Peru in 1996-1997. METHODS: Standardized interviews, serologic tests for HIV and syphilis, bivariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: HIV seropositivity was confirmed in 58 women (0.5%). Only 22.6% were married, and only 12% of HIV infected women reported >or=2 sex partners ever. In multivariate analyses HIV infection was associated with: short duration of current rel

The secret: study of a perverse transference.

This clinical communication describes the analysis of a perverse transference in an overtly bisexual man. An intricate interplay between heterosexual and homosexual relations enabled him to maintain some heterosexual functioning and to counteract or evacuate intolerable affects and vengeful impulses--originating from early traumas--through perverse acting out with sexual partners. Building on the notion that patients with sexual perversions recreate aspects of their perversion in the transference/countertransference relationship, where it must be analysed, the author illustrates through detail

Human immunodeficiency virus infection in Taiwan, 1984 to 1994.

From 1984 to September 1994, a total of 9,099,734 serum samples from six population groups were tested for the antibody to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV). Mandatory testing was carried out for blood donors, military recruits, immigrants and prisoners; other population groups were tested anonymously with consent. A total of 695 samples were seropositive and, of these HIV carriers, 142 developed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although the prevalence of HIV infection and AIDS has remained low, there has been a rapid increase since 1991. Of the 142 AIDS cases, 68 were in hom

Probability of female-to-male transmission of HIV-1 in Thailand.

The epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in Thailand has allowed an estimate to be made of the probability of female-to-male HIV-1 transmission per sexual contact. In a study of 1115 21-year-old male military conscripts, of whom 77 (6.9%) were HIV-1 seropositive, sex with female prostitutes was identified as the principal mode of HIV-1 transmission. With a mathematical model including data on conscript's age at first sexual contact, frequency of sex with female prostitutes, and province of origin; as well as province-specific HIV-1 seroprevalence of prostitutes, we

HIV infection in the nineties.

By the year 2000 a cumulative global total of 30-40 million men, women and children are projected to have been infected with HIV. This will represent a three to four times increase of the present total. Currently, it is estimated that about 5000 persons are newly infected daily. Worldwide, the predominant and increasing mode of transmission is by heterosexual intercourse. Therefore, the number of infected women will equal that of men. Consequently, more infants will be infected by their mothers and more infants will be orphaned as their parents die of AIDS. By the end of the 1990s, over one mi

[Comparative results of coprological tests for the detection of intestinal amebae and flagellates in 200 male homosexuals. An appraisal of the risk of amebiasis].

When comparing the results of coprological tests carried out in optimal conditions among 200 male homosexuals (MHS) (1) and 500 male heterosexuals, most of whom were suffering from intestinal disorders, it was found that 52% of MHS and only 3.6% of heterosexuals were Ent. histolytica carriers. The 14 to 1 ratio shows the "uncorrected" relative risk of amoebiasis among MHS, which becomes a 10-12 to 1 corrected relative risk, after taking into account intervening factors. Travelling to the tropics does not increase the incidence of amoebiasis among examined MHS. The occurrence rates of Ent. coli

CHildren of the Cohort Study (CHOC): Exploring parenting desire among people living with HIV in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV is now a chronic condition with an excellent life expectancy, some personal aspects affecting people living with HIV (PLWH), such as parenting desire, are relatively understudied. This study aimed to explore parenting desire among PLWH in Switzerland. METHODS: From September 2022 until January 2024, PLWH (participants) enrolled in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS) and followed up at seven university/cantonal hospitals were invited to complete a structured questionnaire co-designed with patient and public involvement. There were no exclusion criteria. The questionnaire

Disparities in self-reported mental health, physical health, and substance use across sexual orientations in Canada.

BACKGROUND: While prior studies have shown LGB individuals have elevated risk of poor mental health, poor physical health, and substance use, existing study designs may be improved by using representative samples, wider ranges of health outcomes, heterosexual comparison groups, and disaggregated data. The goal of this study is to provide estimates of multiple health disparities across sexual orientations in Canada based on these principles. METHODS: Using data from 2009-2014 Canadian Community Health Surveys, a sample of 19,980,000 weighted individuals was created. Outcomes included mental he

How Much Do Young Australians Know About Syphilis Compared With Chlamydia and Gonorrhea? Findings From an Online Survey.

BACKGROUND: There is increased heterosexual transmission of syphilis in Australia, an infection with severe outcomes. Australian policy emphasizes increasing sexually transmissible infection knowledge/awareness. However, little is known about young Australians' perceptions and knowledge of syphilis. METHODS: Our online sexual health survey was open May 2 to June 21, 2022, to 16- to 29-year-olds in Australia. We asked participants if they were aware of syphilis, their personal risk perception, and perceived severity of infection and compared with results for chlamydia/gonorrhea. Multivariable

Willingness to use HIV prevention methods among vaccine efficacy trial participants in Soweto, South Africa: discretion is important.

BACKGROUND: Despite multiple available HIV prevention methods, the HIV epidemic continues to affect South Africa the most. We sought to understand willingness to use actual and hypothetical HIV prevention methods among participants enrolled in a preventative HIV vaccine efficacy trial in Soweto, South Africa. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study with 38 self-reporting HIV-uninfected and consenting 18-35 year olds participating in the HVTN 702 vaccine efficacy trial in Soweto. Using a semi-structured interview guide, five focus group discussions (FGDs) were held, stratified by age, gender

A Systematic Review of Family Victimization Experiences Among Sexual Minority Youth.

Sexual minority youth experience substantially higher rates of family victimization than their heterosexual peers. No systematic review has yet identified the predictors and consequences in this vulnerable population of childhood abuse, exposure to sibling abuse and domestic violence, and sibling aggression. This systematic review aims to (a) describe differences in these family victimization rates by sexual orientation, gender, and race/ethnicity; (b) identify potential sexual minority and non-sexual minority-specific risk factors; and (c) identify physical, mental, and behavioral health and
