The Defective Self Model of self-injury (Hooley, Ho, Slater, & Lockshin, 2010) asserts that individuals choose to self-injure to gratify the desire for self-punishment associated with a self-critical cognitive style. Specifically, self-injury is used to regulate negative self-directed thoughts and emotions and is made accessible via the belief that the individual deserves punishment. This study sought to test primary assumptions of the Defective Self Model using a 2-week daily diary protocol. It was hypothesized that trait self-criticism would predict daily self-injury urge intensity and behav

We aimed to investigate the effect of sleep problems, depression, and cognitive processes on suicidal risk among 460 young adults. They completed self-report questionnaires assessing suicidal behavior, sleep quality, depressive symptoms, emotion regulation, rumination, and impulsivity. Suicidal participants exhibited higher rates of depressive symptoms, sleep problems, expressive suppression, rumination, and impulsivity. A confirmatory factor analysis model revealed pathways to suicidal risk that showed no direct pathways between sleep problems and suicidal risk. Instead, sleep was related to

We determined suicide attempt characteristics in 160 opioid-dependent subjects. Three aspects of suicide vulnerability were also examined: familial aggregation of suicidal behaviors, degree of aggression/impulsivity, and smoking. Forty-eight percent of subjects had a personal history of suicide attempt. A personal history of suicide attempt was associated with an early onset of heroin use, but not with gender differences. A family history of suicide was a progressive risk factor for suicide attempt. Subjects with a personal history of suicide attempt had a higher degree of aggression/impulsivi

OBJECTIVE: This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of Emotion Regulation Group Therapy (ERGT) as an adjunct to Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-E) for adults with eating disorders and co-occurring impulsive and destructive behaviors.
METHOD: Participants were recruited from a specialist outpatient eating disorder service in Stockholm, Sweden. Thirty-two adults meeting eligibility criteria were randomized (1:1) to either CBT-E plus ERGT (n = 16) or CBT-E only (n = 16). Assessments were conducted at pre-treatment, during treatment, post-treat

The concept of the obsessive-compulsive spectrum has exerted a major influence on contemporary psychiatry and contributed substantially to the establishment of the DSM-5 category of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders. However, the notion of obsessionality employed within this framework does not necessarily correspond to the classical psychopathological concept developed in European descriptive psychopathology. This paper reexamines the concept of obsessionality through a psychopathological comparison with neighboring phenomena, including impulsivity, addiction, autochthonous thinking,

Current data on the nature of aggressive individuals' difficulties in reappraising their spontaneous hostile intent attribution are contradictory: they are impulsive and don't seek out for additional nonhostile cues vs. they pay attention to nonhostile cues but fail to integrate them into their hostile schemas. To better understand the nature of aggressive people's reappraisal difficulties, we developed an event-related brain potential (ERP) protocol inspired by Zaki's (2013) cue integration model. The objective of this study was to track the neural activity associated with the violation of ex

Accumulating evidence indicates that exposure to general anesthetics during infancy and childhood can cause persistent cognitive impairment, alterations in synaptic plasticity, and, to a lesser extent, increased incidence of behavioral disorders. Unfortunately, the developmental parameters of susceptibility to general anesthetics are not well understood. Adolescence is a critical developmental period wherein multiple late developing brain regions may also be vulnerable to enduring general anesthetic effects. Given the breadth of the adolescent age span, this group potentially represents millio

The present study examined the relationship between characteristics associated with personality disorders, substance use, and HIV risk among adults with a history of serious mental illness. Participants included 103 adults with antisocial or borderline personality disorder, serious mental illness, and recent HIV risk behavior. The sample was predominately male (64%), diverse (42% African American and 13% Hispanic), and homeless/marginally housed (76%). In order to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and risk we constructed a risk index comprising key symptoms of antiso

The various eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, are characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior and are seen as typical "psychosomatic disorders". The subdivision of anorexia nervosa into two subtypes, namely "anorexia nervosa restricting type" and "anorexia nervosa bulimic type" has proved to be very good. It is to be assumed that eating disorders are not a homogeneous group, and that the various subtypes of eating disorders are also heterogeneous at several levels. Co-morbid psychiatric disorders, especially affective disorders, anxiety

AIM: In the different psychiatric disorders the aggression often leads to uncontrolled events, taking aspects of impulsiveness and irrationality. Our research proposes the assessment of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with a psychiatric disorder, who presented an aggressive event.
METHODS: The observational study was conducted on a sample of 50 patients (34 men and 16 women), hospitalized following the manifestation of an aggressive event. For each patient was provided an assessment of socio-demographic and clinical variables and a psychometric investigation through

Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) is a human syndrome mapped to the thyroid receptor beta (TRbeta) gene on chromosome 3, representing a mutation of the ligand-binding domain of the TRbeta gene. The syndrome is characterized by reduced tissue responsiveness to thyroid hormone and elevated serum levels of thyroid hormones. A common behavioral phenotype associated with RTH is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). To test the hypothesis that RTH produces attention deficits and/or hyperactivity, transgenic mice expressing a mutant TRbeta gene were generated. The present experiment test

Hyperactivity is typically diagnosed when children display overactivity, inappropriate inattention, and impulsivity during the school day when involved in tasks that require sustained and voluntary attention. However, distinguishing children with hyperactivity from children with other learning and behavior disorders is often difficult because of an overlap in symptom expression. Some studies have failed to find any factors associated only with the hyperactive syndrome. The present study compared the behavior of students diagnosed as hyperactive or having attention deficit disorder to students

BACKGROUND: Negative affect and impulsivity can influence one another and have momentary influences on emerging adult drinking behaviors. Heterogeneity in drinking patterns/profiles, such as frequent heavy or light drinking, may also reflect differences in these momentary effects potentially due to distinct putative drinking mechanisms.
METHODS: Emerging adults (N = 366; 64.4% women) with at least one binge drinking episode in the past 30 days completed a baseline survey and 14-day ecological momentary assessments (EMA) with multiple daily surveys (n ≥ 7; M = 5.33). Latent profile analysis (L

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric (e.g., PTSD, alcohol use disorder) and physical issues (e.g., chronic pain, sleep problems) are robustly associated with the use of intimate partner violence (IPV). These chronic conditions can amplify the likelihood of IPV use by increasing perceived threat, poor relationship quality, and negative affect while simultaneously decreasing the ability to inhibit violent behavior. However, the research in this area has largely been examined in limited samples or by examining a single chronic condition above diagnostic cut-offs or specific dual diagnosis (e.g., PTSD and al

This study addressed the presence of executive dysfunction in children with CHARGE syndrome, a genetic disorder with multiple physical anomalies and severe challenging behaviors. Ninety-eight children were included in the study. More than half received clinically significant scores on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia et al., 2000) scales of Shift, Monitor, and the Behavioral Regulation Index, with additional high scores on Inhibit and the Global Executive Composite. Associations were found with the age the child first walked, scores on the Autism Behavior Check

This study explores gender differences in lifetime and recent substance use/internalizing behavior, childhood externalizing behavior, and gambling preferences among African-American youth gamblers. Data are from a prospective study of a community sample of 452 urban African-American youths who began at entry into first grade and were followed for ten years. Gambling was associated with high teacher ratings of childhood externalizing behaviors among males and with high parent ratings of childhood impulsivity and hyperactivity among both genders. Internalizing behavior was associated with female

Suicidal behavior and self-mutilation can be regarded as the expression of self-directed aggression and both are common in prison populations. We investigated the influence of externalizing behaviors, depressive symptoms, childhood trauma, 5-HTTLPR variants on self-directed aggression (N = 145) in a group of 702 male Italian prisoners. Participants were comprehensively evaluated, including for psychiatric disorders, impulsive traits, lifetime aggressive behavior [Brown-Goodwin Lifetime History of Aggression (BGHA)], hostility, violent behavior during incarceration, depressive symptomatology [H
