Adaptation and Acceptability of a Low-Intensity Cognitive Behavioral Therapy App to Support Low Mood and Worry Management in Female Forces Veterans: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health help-seeking barriers experienced by female forces veterans result in them being underserved and underrepresented. Efforts are therefore required to adapt interventions for female veterans to enhance acceptability and maximize engagement. Given a smaller number and wider geographical distribution of female veterans, targeting adaptation efforts at a digital mobile phone app based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has potential for greatest impact to improve access to a scalable evidence-based psychological therapy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the adapt

The relationship between health literacy and exercise self-efficacy in pregnant women: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Maternal health is intricately linked with health literacy, which significantly influences pregnant women's ability to access, comprehend, and utilize health-related information. Despite its critical role, a substantial proportion of pregnant women exhibit low health literacy, precipitating considerable challenges in health management and potentially compromising pregnancy outcomes. So, this study seeks to elucidate the relationship between health literacy and exercise self-efficacy among pregnant women, to inform evidence-based interventions aimed at enhancing maternal he

Contextual factors influencing schistosomiasis treatment and identification of delivery platforms for arpraziquantel in hard-to-reach areas and populations in Homa Bay County, Kenya.

A new formulation of praziquantel, arpraziquantel (arPZQ), has been developed for preschool-aged children (PSAC) to fill the treatment gap for this age group in schistosomiasis control and elimination programs. There is now a priority to ensure that the drug reaches all at-risk PSAC in endemic areas, including hard-to-reach areas and populations. This study aimed to determine schistosomiasis treatment-related contextual factors among fishermen and island populations in Homa Bay County, Kenya, and to identify a suitable platform to deliver arPZQ. We conducted a generic qualitative study using t

Machine-learning Prognostic Models from the 2014-16 Ebola Outbreak: Data-harmonization Challenges, Validation Strategies, and mHealth Applications.

BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) plagues low-resource and difficult-to-access settings. Machine learning prognostic models and mHealth tools could improve the understanding and use of evidence-based care guidelines in such settings. However, data incompleteness and lack of interoperability limit model generalizability. This study harmonizes diverse datasets from the 2014-16 EVD epidemic and generates several prognostic models incorporated into the novel Ebola Care Guidelines app that provides informed access to recommended evidence-based guidelines. METHODS: Multivariate logistic regress

Development of an online library of patient-reported outcome measures in gastroenterology: the GI-PRO database.

OBJECTIVES: Because gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses can cause physical, emotional, and social distress, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are used to guide clinical decision making, conduct research, and seek drug approval. It is important to develop a mechanism for identifying, categorizing, and evaluating the over 100 GI PROs that exist. Here we describe a new, National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported, online PRO clearinghouse-the GI-PRO database. METHODS: Using a protocol developed by the NIH Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS(®)), we performed a systematic

Generative AI use before medical visits: disclosure-item responses, trust, and care-seeking behaviors in a cross-sectional social-media survey in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Patient-facing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly used for health information seeking, yet their role in patient-physician communication remains insufficiently characterized. Using the Network Episode Model as the primary framework, this study examined self-reported pre-consultation AI use, whether respondents reported disclosing that use to a physician, and self-reported AI-associated health-behavior change in a convenience sample of Polish adults recruited via social media. Findings are exploratory. METHODS: Cross-sectional online surv

An Intervention to Increase Condom Use Among Users of Sexually Transmitted Infection Self-sampling Websites (Wrapped): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Reducing the rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among young people is a public health priority. The best way to avoid STIs from penetrative sex is to use a condom, but young people report inconsistent use. A missed opportunity to intervene to increase condom use is when young people access self-sampling kits for STIs through the internet. The potential of this opportunity is enhanced by the increasing numbers of young people being tested through this route every year in England. Hence, in a cocreation by young people, stakeholders, and researchers, Wrapped was develope

Profiling hearing aid users through big data explainable artificial intelligence techniques.

Debilitating hearing loss (HL) affects ~6% of the human population. Only 20% of the people in need of a hearing assistive device will eventually seek and acquire one. The number of people that are satisfied with their Hearing Aids (HAids) and continue using them in the long term is even lower. Understanding the personal, behavioral, environmental, or other factors that correlate with the optimal HAid fitting and with users' experience of HAids is a significant step in improving patient satisfaction and quality of life, while reducing societal and financial burden. Family Caregiver Experiences with Mobile Behavioral Health Crisis Services: A Qualitative Study.

Mobile behavioral health crisis response services, staffed by clinicians and specialists, can support individuals experiencing urgent mental health or substance use issues. While Medicaid coverage for these services since 2021 has supported growth in their availability, research on family caregivers' experiences with mobile crisis services remains limited. Family caregivers often participate in encounters with crisis services when the person in crisis cannot seek help independently due to their symptoms. This study aimed to explore family members' experiences with a mobile crisis program in th

From Circuits to Sessions: Linking 'Chemical Imbalance' to Rapid Tele-Psychotherapy With Music.

BACKGROUND: Progress in neuroimaging research has provided insight into the neurobiological mechanism underlying depression, specifically motivational anhedonia, which compromises patients' ability to initiate goal-directed action. Breit et al. formerly, using the same cohort versus controls; correlations with reduced motivation were observed within superiority SLF and precuneus and authors emphasized that such results should pave the way to biomarkers in drug grounded development. OBJECTIVE: This paper seeks to cross-fertilise neurobiological understandings of motivational anhedonia with nov

Practice-Informed Approaches to Addressing Substance Abuse and Trauma Exposure in Urban Native Families Involved with Child Welfare.

Similar to families from other groups, urban-based American Indian and Alaska Native ("Native") family members involved with the child welfare system due to substance abuse issues are also often challenged by untreated trauma exposure. The link between these conditions and the history of genocidal policies aimed at destroying Native family ties, as well as experiences of ongoing discrimination, bring added dimensions for consideration when pro- viding services to these families. Practice-based evidence indicates that the trauma-informed and culturally responsive model developed by the Denver I

Knowledge, attitudes and practices related to health and well-being in a forest fringe community in southern India.

BACKGROUND: Variations in healthcare perceptions, knowledge and behaviors across different socioeconomic strata and regions underscore disparities in healthcare access and satisfaction levels. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerability of forest-dependent communities to increased disease risks and the need to involve local communities in pandemic preparedness through education and awareness regarding disease and ill-health. This article synthesizes the challenges with respect to health and disease, healthcare services, and access to the same among forest-fringe communities. METHODS: We u

Examining the Relationships Between Indoor Environmental Quality Parameters Pertaining to Light, Noise, Temperature, and Humidity and the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of People Living With Dementia: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: A common challenge for individuals caring for people with Alzheimer disease and related dementias is managing the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Effective management of BPSD will increase the quality of life of people living with dementia, lessen caregivers' burden, and lower health care cost. OBJECTIVE: In this review, we seek to (1) examine how indoor environmental quality parameters pertaining to light, noise, temperature, and humidity are associated with BPSD and how controlling these parameters can help manage these symptoms and (2) identify the cur

Improving understanding of capacity to consent to sensitive HIV biomedical prevention research among adolescents and their parents or guardians in Rakai Uganda (ICARE): a quasi-experimental nonequivalent groups design protocol.

BACKGROUND: For research on sensitive topics like HIV, it is critical to understand the capacity of adolescents to provide informed consent, as parental consent has been identified as the greatest barrier to adolescent participation in biomedical research. In many countries including low-and middle-income countries, where 90% of adolescents live, adolescents can consent to sexual and reproductive healthcare but require parent/guardian permission to participate in research before age 18 - leading to adolescent underrepresentation and systematic exclusion from biomedical and behavioral studies.

Bilingual Cancer Genetic Education Modules for the Deaf Community: Development and Evaluation of the Online Video Material.

Health information about inherited forms of cancer and the role of family history in cancer risk for the American Sign Language (ASL) Deaf community, a linguistic and cultural community, needs improvement. Cancer genetic education materials available in English print format are not accessible for many sign language users because English is not their native or primary language. Per Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, the level of literacy for printed health education materials should not be higher than 6th grade level (~ 11 to 12 years old), and even with this recommendat

Effect of a Website That Presents Patients' Experiences on Self-Efficacy and Patient Competence of Colorectal Cancer Patients: Web-Based Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients often seek other patients' experiences with the disease. The Internet provides a wide range of opportunities to share and learn about other people's health and illness experiences via blogs or patient-initiated online discussion groups. There also exists a range of medical information devices that include experiential patient information. However, there are serious concerns about the use of such experiential information because narratives of others may be powerful and pervasive tools that may hinder informed decision making.
