Consolidating strategic planning and operational frameworks for integrated vector management in Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary malaria vector control relies on the use of insecticide-based, indoor residual spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). However, malaria-endemic countries, including Eritrea, have struggled to effectively deploy these tools due technical and operational challenges, including the selection of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors. This manuscript outlines the processes undertaken in consolidating strategic planning and operational frameworks for vector control to expedite malaria elimination in Eritrea. CASE DESCRIPTION: The effort to strengthen s

Implementing a spinosad-based local bait station to control Bactrocera cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) in high rainfall areas of Reunion Island.

Three species of fruit flies cause serious damage to cucurbit crops on Reunion Island: Bactrocera cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) (Coquillett 1899), Dacus ciliatus (Loew 1901), and Dacus demmerezi (Bezzi 1917). To control them, a program of agroecological management of cucurbit flies has been implemented based on the application of Synéis-appât, especially spot sprays on corn borders. However, the high rainfall on Reunion Island limits the long-term efficiency of the bait; in addition, this method cannot be used for large chayote trellises, because corn borders cannot be planted around them.

Modeling the seasonality of Anopheles gambiae s.s. biting rates in a South Benin sanitary zone.

BACKGROUND: Efficient malaria vector control requires knowledge of spatio-temporal vector dynamics. We have classified village groups according to the biting rate profiles of both Anopheles coluzzii and An. gambiae, the major malaria vectors in these villages. METHODS: Mosquitoes were captured by human bait in 28 South Benin villages during 2009. Both An. coluzzii and An. gambiae counts in each village were standardized to focus on changes in the vector biting rate over time. Latent class trajectory modeling, allowing for random intercept at the 'village' level, was adjusted to standardized v

Development of a novel walk-through fly trap for the control of horn flies and other pests on pastured dairy cows.

A prototype walk-through fly vacuum system, designed to remove horn flies Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) from cattle, was developed and tested for efficacy. The study was conducted during 4 fly seasons over 17 consecutive weeks each year within the months of May through September at 1 dairy research herd in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Additional data on horn flies, as well as face flies (Musca autumnalis) and stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans), were collected during 1 yr from 7 commercial pasture-based and organic dairy farms in the piedmont region of North Carolina. Chemosensory receptors in tsetse flies provide link between chemical and behavioural ecology.

Tsetse flies survive in a variety of environments across tropical Africa, often rising to large numbers, despite their low birth rate of one offspring every seven to nine days. They use olfactory receptors to process chemical signals in their environments to find food, escape from predators, and locate suitable larviposition sites. We discuss the identification of odorant and gustatory receptors in Glossina morsitans morsitans and the role genomics could play in management of nuisance insects.

Potential of contact insecticides to control Xyleborus glabratus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a vector of laurel wilt disease in avocados.

Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is an invasive ambrosia beetle that vectors laurel wilt, a new disease that threatens avocado and other species in the Lauraceae Family. The lethal concentrations (LC50 & 90) of nine commercial insecticides to X. glabratus were determined by using a bolt-dip bioassay. Different formulations of bifenthrin, permethrin, fenpropathrin, z-cypermethrin + bifenthrin, 1-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam, malathion, chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, and methomyl were tested. Four concentrations of each insecticide were tested (0.5, 0.1, 0.03, and 0.01

Red turpentine beetle: innocuous native becomes invasive tree killer in China.

The red turpentine beetle (RTB), Dendroctonus valens LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is a secondary pest of pines in its native range in North and Central America. Outbreaks and tree mortality attributed to RTB alone are rare in its native range. RTB was introduced into China in the early 1980s and spread rapidly from Shanxi Province to four adjacent provinces; it has infested over 500,000 ha of pine forest and has caused extensive tree mortality since 1999. We provide a historical background on RTB outbreaks, explanations for its invasive success, management options, and econ

Potential use of neem leaf slurry as a sustainable dry season management strategy to control the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE) in west African villages.

Larval management of the malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae Giles s.s., has been successful in reducing disease transmission. However, pesticides are not affordable to farmers in remote villages in Mali, and in other material resource poor countries. Insect resistance to insecticides and nontarget toxicity pose additional problems. Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) is a tree with many beneficial, insect bioactive compounds, such as azadirachtin. We tested the hypothesis that neem leaf slurry is a sustainable, natural product, anopheline larvicide. A field study conducted in Sanambele (Mali) in

Lethal and sublethal effects of avermectin/milbemycin parasiticides on the African malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis.

Four cattle parasiticides of the avermectin/milbemycin class were examined for lethal and sublethal effects on the zoophilic, African malaria vector Anopheles arabiensis. Ivermectin, moxidectin, doramectin, and eprinomectin were mixed with bovine blood and provided to laboratory-reared An. arabiensis in a membrane feeder. Ivermectin and eprinomectin were lethal to An. arabiensis at low concentrations (LC50s of 7.9 ppb and 8.5 ppb, respectively). While the lethality of doramectin (LC50 of 23.9 ppb), was less than that of ivermectin and eprinomectin, it markedly reduced egg development. The conc

Anopheline fauna and malaria transmission in four ecologically distinct zones in Cameroon.

Knowledge of baseline malaria transmission intensity in a given environment is important to guide malaria control interventions. In Cameroon, recent information on malaria transmission intensity is insufficient. Therefore, an entomological study was conducted in four ecologically different sites throughout the country to assess the seasonal patterns in malaria transmission intensity. Anopheles arabiensis was the main vector in six of the nine study sites, while An. gambiae sensu stricto was the most important vector in the other three sites. Clear differences in entomological inoculation rates

Do colour and surface area of ovitrap influence the oviposition behaviour of Aedes aegypti, the vector of dengue and DHF?

A newly developed ovitrap made from a fiberglass tray (FGTO) was compared with conventionally used black jar ovitrap (BJO) in field condition in terms of number of eggs received. The number of eggs laid in FGTO was consistently higher than in BJO. The number of eggs collected in FGTO was significantly higher and it was 5-94 times more than that of BJO (t =9.45; p<0.0001). This finding has implication in designing lethal ovitraps for the control of dengue vectors.

Efficacy of a novel formulation of metaflumizone for the control of fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) on cats.

A novel spot-on formulation containing metaflumizone (ProMeris for Cats, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Overland Park, KS) was evaluated in five laboratory studies to determine the duration of residual efficacy in cats against fleas after a single spot treatment. In each study, eight domestic shorthair cats were randomly allocated to each treatment group and individually housed. One group in each study remained non-treated. In one study, an additional group of eight cats was treated with a placebo formulation. Cats were treated topically with metaflumizone formulation to provide a dose of at least

Progress towards the elimination of onchocerciasis as a public-health problem in Uganda: opportunities, challenges and the way forward.

The national onchocerciasis-control programme in Uganda successfully eliminated Simulium neavei s.s. from the Itwara focus in 1997, by monthly ground spraying with larvicidal temophos (Abate). Since then, no vectors have been caught in the main Itwara focus or two secondary foci in the same area. After 4 years of intervention, S. neavei s.s. has also been nearly eliminated from the Mpamba-Nkusi focus, and the elimination of this vector from two more foci (West Nile and Wambabya-Rwamarongo) appears quite feasible. There are, however, four isolated foci in Uganda (Budongo, Kashoya-Kitomi, Mount

Life-table analysis of Anopheles malaria vectors: generational mortality as tool in mosquito vector abundance and control studies.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Vector control will for sometime remain a primary weapon in the war against vector borne diseases. Malaria is of paramount importance in this with its associated high morbidity and mortality especially in sub-Saharan Africa. This study on generational mortality associated factors in Anopheles mosquitoes life-table analysis was designed to investigate the fecundity, levels of mortality and mortality associated factors at the aquatic stages of anopheline malaria vectors. METHODS: Mortality associated factors were investigated at the eggs, I and II instar larval, III and

Acaricide resistance in northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) populations on caged layer operations in Southern California.

Southern California caged layer operations were visited over 3 yr. Northern fowl mites from 26 field populations were tested for acaricide resistance using a capillary pipette and glass dish bioassay. One was a susceptible field population with no pesticide exposure for over 30 yr (reference site for resistance ratio calculation). Technical and commercial formulations of malathion, carbaryl (Sevin), permethrin, and a commercial formulation of tetrachlorvinphos/dichlorvos (Ravap) were tested. Malathion did not have high activity for mites relative to other materials, but resistance to both tech

Reflections on the Anopheles gambiae genome sequence, transgenic mosquitoes and the prospect for controlling malaria and other vector borne diseases.

The completion of the Anopheles gambiae Giles genome sequencing project is a milestone toward developing more effective strategies in reducing the impact of malaria and other vector borne diseases. The successes in developing transgenic approaches using mosquitoes have provided another essential new tool for further progress in basic vector genetics and the goal of disease control. The use of transgenic approaches to develop refractory mosquitoes is also possible. The ability to use genome sequence to identify genes, and transgenic approaches to construct refractory mosquitoes, has provided th
